My baby's head is a strange shape and it makes me sad that I notice it

I have posted lots on here since my ds arrived over 4 weeks ago but I haven't been able to write about this before.

My ds has a strange shaped head, it almost looks like its oblong at the back, like he has a cyclists helmet on. It's not perfectly round, like I thought all babies heads are.

It makes me feel like I am picking faults with him by even writing this down. I'm not I love him to bits but his head looks funny. We have raised this when he was born, he has been checked out by doctors and they say there is nothing wrong with him, measurements are all fine but it looks funny to me. His head is fine when you look at him from the front but when you see a side profile of him or look at him from the back, there is an oblong shape to the back of his head.

I feel disappointed that his head doesn't look perfect. I feel disappointed with myself for noticing. I'm a teacher, so I'm worried that he will be teased at school. I can't believe I worried about this already as he's only 4 and a bit weeks.

What else can I do? The specialist nurse we took him to when he was a week old, said enjoy him, he's perfect. The said his hair will cover it, or he can wear a hat! So clearly she could see something was unusual.

Sorry, I'm rambling. Sad

Totally normal. Both my dc's looked like that.

Belmo · 03/03/2013 13:08

Aww that looks like a lovely wee head!

QuickQuickSloe · 03/03/2013 13:09

He's fine Smile talk to your health visitor if you are worried but his head looks perfect.

That's a normal head! Grin

Pinkflipflop · 03/03/2013 13:10

Ok maybe that picture doesn't show it properly but don't you think the back of his head sticks out too far from his neck?

Awww, honestly, it looks fine! Really fine!

I think my head is a funny shape. You can't tell at all from looking at it, but when I lean my head back on the headboard when reading in bed, I have to tilt it slightly to the right because the left side of the back of my skull comes out further than the right iyswim. Will have to ask my Dad if it was an odd shape when I was a baby!

Pinkflipflop · 03/03/2013 13:10

Like it is too long?

My niece had this- I even remember it being described as a cycle helmet! My sis pointed it out to her paediatrician, he was not concerned. Her head is perfectly normal now -she's 4.

pixiestix · 03/03/2013 13:13

My daughters head was just like that! It is so normal. She has kind of "grown into it" now so please please don't worry.

Shellywelly1973 · 03/03/2013 13:13

I was going to advise you to look up private treatment for babys with mis- shaped heads.

My ds now4 has a very flat head. I took him to the GP as a baby & he dismissed my concerns. Now ds head is still so flat on one side it affects his ear. Ds wears glasses & its a pain getting glasses adjusted to stay on his head. I have his hair cut to cover it& even the barber was a bit surprised.

BUT...
Your baby looks absolutely fine. I would tell you if he had a wonky head but trust me, he's got a lovely gorgeous baby head!!

Iggly · 03/03/2013 13:15

My DD's head sticks out at the back a bit. I think it's normal. The docs have said its normal so...

How did the birth go? How are you finding being a new mum?

Branleuse · 03/03/2013 13:19

id say that head was actually PARTICULARLY cute

FannyFifer · 03/03/2013 13:20

Awwwww that is an absolutely normal looking and gorgeous wee head, DD had quite a long narrow head, DS was a bit wider and rounder both perfectly normal.
If you are feeling very anxious about it though, maybe speak to your GP.

Pinkflipflop · 03/03/2013 13:20

I'm going to be brave and upload a picture where you can see more of his head.

This might give you a better idea of what I mean. Worried in case he gets recognised! However if you know my boy please don't out him!

The birth was fine; csection and recovery good so far. I'm finding motherhood challenging and very busy but I think I'm getting there!

That's good! I was going to suggest speaking to your HV if you're feeling particularly worried or find yourself obsessing or finding things hard in general.
Honestly - my DD's head has that long at the back shape thingy. As do I. Have you looked at your head or your DH's?

MajaBiene · 03/03/2013 13:24

Still normal!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 03/03/2013 13:26

I've seen both photos, his head is perfect, really. He's also very cute.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/03/2013 13:26

He really is Gorgeous! Remember babies always have weird shaped heads. They get squished on the way out, and they need to grow into their heads, they are disproportionately large for a few years

KristinaM · 03/03/2013 13:26

My friends baby Dd had a flat bit at the back of her head. She was given a small helmet thing to wear to correct it. I'm sorry I don't know if she had any diagnosis or the name of the helmet.

Thanks. I tried to upload a side and a front picture but they seem to disappear.

Pink please don't take it the wrong way, but you made me laugh out loud.

I was expecting a square head!

His head is completely normal, there's nothing wrong/different about it, trust me. He's also very cute Smile

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/03/2013 13:31

Oh Pink, your baby is beautiful and he has a perfectly normal, indeed very well-shaped, head!

As others have said, heads change as they grow and also his little neck is just like a stalk at the moment but will develop muscles, especially at the back, which will make any sticking-outness at the back of the head much less noticeable anyway.

But he looks NORMAL, really he does. Congratulations on your beautiful boy.

pinkpaperpiggy · 03/03/2013 13:31

Another vote for a perfectly normal, gorgeous baby.

Pinkflipflop · 03/03/2013 13:32

When I keep adding the other picture so as people can compare his head from all angles the other one disappears.

He looks very angry in one of the pictures, the one of the front of his head,

Can people see all pictures? Do I really have nothing to worry about? I'm worried that everyone is noticing it but people are too polite to say anything, hence worrying he will get bullied at school.
