Moving to Australia.....

We are currently applying for a visa and are moving to Aussie next year, we have a ds1 who is 5 a ds2 who is 3 and a dd who is 7 months, how big an impact do you think it will have for them, does it not affect them much as they are only young, ds1 has been asking a few questions recently and by the time we go out there he will be just turned 7, is there a good age to make such a large move? has anyone ever made such a big move and had problems with their kids? do i need to prepare them for it sooner or later? any help/info would be very much appreciated Smile xx

suzywong · 03/05/2006 02:49

How often do you see spiders in your homes out there? id like some idea of what to expect in that area! its the one thing that bothers me the most about aussie

only place we had them was in our three car shed in the back garden... never ever had them in my house... they like dark dry areas... sprayed them with spider spray I got from the supermarket - no more.... worse we have in the house is daddy long legs and the odd huntsmen..... redbacks are more spring/summer things too.

I get annoyed with ghekkos.. they will drive you madder than spiders. Or ugly cane toads that spit at you......

eidsvold · 03/05/2006 11:42

dh hates the ants and flies... but most houses are screened to not usually a problem.

yummimummy · 04/05/2006 00:55

I've never seen a spider in the house.
We live in a modern ( hermetically sealed) house though - when we lived in an old Queenslander, lovely though it was, it did seem to harbour it's share of 6 and 8 legged friends Smile
We do have a Golden Orb spider which lives in a web across our front entrance and keeps on respinning it every time it gets moved ( large spider, very large 3-D web and a vertically strung larder of victims - but entirely harmless, unless you are a hapless flying creature of course)
The web covers DH's face every time he walks through as he always forgets about it Grin

hannahsaunt · 04/05/2006 02:33

No spiders here. Lots of geckos though but we love them esp our albino pair who live out the back. We do however have legions of ants who can sniff out the slightest hint of spilled juice or crumb of biscuit. The wee ant rid things are good though. We hose the wasp nests off the side of the house every so often but they never seem to contain wasps. Beasties aren't a major issue at least in the house. Outside mozzies are the major issue (we have dengue here and ross river at the moment so vigilant about keeping water out of plant dishes and the like).

Am very very happy that I live in NZ ... no spidies here ... well, apart from the whitetail - an undesirable immigrant for Australia - which has a nasty bite and can hide in your washing. I nearly flew back to the UK when I found one in my laundry - DH had promised me that there were no nasties in NZ - he lied lied lied ....

Why would anyone want to live in a country that contains the world's most deadly creatures???????

suzywong · 04/05/2006 05:40

ghosty you big girls blouse
It's huntsman season here, I trod on one last year and it bit me, it was in the living room and it felt like treading on a kitten.

We get duguite and taipan snakes here, on the top ten most deadly list.

No one has mentioned the fearsome creatures that liivein the sea yet

yummimummy · 04/05/2006 06:55

LOL Suzy - re the 'kitten'.
PMSL Ghosty - you poor thing

hannahsaunt · 04/05/2006 10:22

We're waiting with baited breath for the stinger nets to be lifted so we can swim with impunity again. Box & irukandji jellyfish season nearly over. Still potential for crocs in the river though.

Gf had a brown snake in her garden a few weeks ago and there was a snake in ds1's school playground (not sure of the variety).

All par for the course really! Home will seem so tame.

threebob · 04/05/2006 18:50

We had 2 white tails in 2 weeks in our house - both out sunbathing, when they are supposed to like the dark. I always get dh to deal with them (he uses his jandal).

sunnydelight · 04/05/2006 19:12

Please people with snake stories tell me you don't live in Sydney Grin I keep looking at property details that boast "bush views" or "close to bush trails" so I'm guessing, as a complete coward, I should avoid these! When I went to Sydney 17 years ago I deliberately chose an apartment on the South Shore as someone told me you only get funnelwebs on the North Shore.

Huge guffaws!

We have 5 massive golden orbs in the back garden, which DP has named Eric, Derek, Cedric and so on. One has a web about the size of a Ford Fiesta.

Next door had a spider that was the size of a toad - really bulky, we were all so impressed we had to take photos.

Last time I saw a huntsman it involved dp comedy room scuttling with kill-spidey spray and a backdrop of me screaming hysterically.

ghosty · 07/05/2006 04:04

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggggggghhhhhhh - stop! You are killing me!!!

eidsvold · 07/05/2006 11:10

oh we have big tree spiders that love our native shrubs at the front and the lilly pillies at the back ( although lilly pillies are gone so spider is now harmless).

snakes really are more likely to slither off than attack if you just stand still and let them be. Only when people start poking at them etc that they get fired up.

Have only ever seen one brown snake in my life ( outside zoos and reptile parks) despite living in the 'bush'. Carpet snakes are good guys - clean out the rats and annoying things like that.

Tell ya - cane toads are the grossest things.....

\link{http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200402/r15303_37576.jpg\here}

poisonous..... and just plain horrid.

eidsvold · 07/05/2006 11:11

i thought daddy long legs couldn't bite or something and so despite being really poisonous are in fact no problem.

eidsvold · 07/05/2006 11:13

don't think kangas and koalas are all cute and cuddly - kangas can rip you into shreds and koalas claws are very dangerous as well. THose roos you see 'boxing' when they are striking with their legs they are using the middle 'toe' claw which is very long and sharp to gouge... not pretty what it can do.

arfishymeau · 07/05/2006 12:02

Daddy long legs are poisonous? OMG. I really need to buy a book about this. At the moment everything is assumed deadly until proven otherwise but I had Dadddy Long Legs down as creepy but harmless.

suzywong · 07/05/2006 12:51

I think they have venom but pathetically weak jaws so cannot deliver it unless you are a bug

Oh god we just had the most fantastic day, a gorgeous 21 degrees and clear skies, we drove out to the bus to visit a Science park and the wineries and a chocolate factory, we watched kangaroos hopping around in the bush and just had a great time. Reaffirms what a great thing it was to move here, so easy to get around, can't imagine the sheer hell it would have been to go on a 80 mile round day trip on a Sunday from London. Sorry just had to get that out and this seemed like the best place. How is everyone?

eidsvold · 07/05/2006 13:11

jealous.... bloody crook suzy - kindy pub lunch - bastards not only forgot to serve my meal but gave me a good dose of food poisoning as a bonus... today first day eaten since wed night and kept it down... now forgot to take strange drugs before eating so have to wait 2 hours after eating to take them!!!!

Drugs are very strange with lots of side effects that the Gp ( not the usual) did not warn me about and they are commonly used to treat gonnorhea (sp?) so now the friendly family pharmacist probably things I have the clap - 20 days worth of antibiotics... okay rant over.

WOuld love a great day out like that.

suzywong · 07/05/2006 13:20

SPRAY@pharmacist thinking you have the clap

How awful for you, do you know what it was that poisoned you? Chicken, fish, someone wiping their nether regions and not washing their hands and then mixing your salad?

But now you can get those trousers from Witchery you've had your eye on in a smaller size.

eidsvold · 07/05/2006 13:23

i ordered teh chick schnitzel and I suspect they had closed kitchen essentially then suddenly poor me says - hey you forgot my lunch - so they probably bunged it into poorly heated oil/not cooked it long enough or into the oil cooking other special of the day.... battered fish....

luckily it was a little cold and i didn't feel like eating the whole thing - have never felt so ill... poor dh he has gone down with something different....

ha ha at the spray - dh thinks it is hilarious... I am the one who usually does the medicine collection - I will never be able to look him in the eye again - he is a rather sweet fella - for a ginger Grin
