Head lice

Iceaddict · 17/12/2012 21:16

Ds 4 just got up for a wee and was scratching his head. I looked and he has head lice. Dp is 200m away so I'm stuck at home unable to get out. Do I, send him to school and treat them when he gets home or do I need to find a shop and sort it before school?

Sorry never experienced it before, will I have them yet? Or dd? I'm petrified of all things crawly. Typical that this happens this week really

You don't need a shop, just some conditioner and a very fine tooth comb. That should see you through until you can get to the shop for a proper nit comb.

3b1g · 17/12/2012 21:20

If it were me, I would get up a bit early tomorrow and comb everyone thoroughly with conditioner before school, but you & DD may still be nit-free.

If he is just 4 and in reception I would keep him off tomorrow morning and buy the stuff to sort it out. If it was a nine year old with an important test I might send them in. But then by 9 I have the studded in all the time

Izzyschangelingisarriving · 17/12/2012 21:22

He has prob got them from school so sending him cant harm, I comb mine 2/3 times a week, and he was still crawling last time I looked, its a never ending battle.

kitbit · 17/12/2012 21:23

Please don't send him to school knowing that he has them, the other mothers won't thank you for passing them on.
But for now, yes to the conditioner and combing, and get a nit comb and stronger medicated shampoo if you want to, tomorrow.
Good luck!

kitbit · 17/12/2012 21:25

Izzy, it's a never ending battle because people keep sending their kids in with lice! Hmm so yes there IS harm...

Iceaddict · 17/12/2012 21:31

Thanks everyone i think Ill have to get to asda first thing. Chemist not open til 9 and I'm working In beauty and it's my busiest week of the year! Couldn't bare to send him in for a day of itchy scalp and passing them on to god knows how many kids. Why didn't I know this would happen one day and have some stuff in. The conditioner/ comb method can't possibly kill them all can it?

OP posts:
blueberryboybait · 17/12/2012 21:37

It doesn't kill them it takes them out his hair, rinse the comb under a tap/wipe it on some kitchen towel between each comb through. If you get the adults out then they can't lay eggs and you can stop the cycle. Comb through with conditioner every day and you should catch any newly hatched ones and stop the cycle.

Izzyschangelingisarriving · 17/12/2012 21:39

Its no harm because half the class will already have them - if I kept DS off every time I found a nit, he would never be in school, besides which, the schools literature that they periodically send out says not to keep them home.

As I said, I comb 2/3 times a week, every week, and he still gets them.

Izzyschangelingisarriving · 17/12/2012 21:45

and treat him if I find them obviously, I keep a stock of Hederin in the house and usually treat both DD and DS because one time, DD was scratching and scratching and it took me a week of daily combing to find a single louse, but I knew they must be there somewhere.

MrsHoolie · 17/12/2012 22:18

You need a Nitty Gritty comb,it's by far the best nit comb. Most chemists sell them. They are pricey but well worth it.
Have a look at their website too as they explain everything about the head lice and cycle of them.

My DC have just had them for the first time and passed them on to me....arghhhhhhhh!

Iceaddict · 17/12/2012 22:22

Thanks so much everyone ok ill comb his hair through with conditioner 1st thing and get any live ones out then treat us all. And tell the school to

OP posts:
Iceaddict · 17/12/2012 22:24

Will get nitty gritty and do it regularly to but I will have to treat them to stop myself freaking out!

Startail · 17/12/2012 22:44

I don't think any of DD2's class would ever have been in school if we'd kept them off school for head lice.

Even after SS helped with the worst offender they were still endemic.

This amused me no end, smug mothers had blamed the poor child, but they couldn't have been perfect either.

Iceaddict · 17/12/2012 23:24

He woke again and was scratching. I've combed his hair with fine comb and conditioner for ages then washed it off his head looks pretty clear I can't find any and he's gone off to sleep without itching. Checked dd while she's asleep and I can't find any so hopefully we caught them quite early. I'll keep using all your advice. Thanks again we'll both sleep a bit better now!! Grin

I had this yesterday!!! The Nitty Gritty comb is AMAZING and I didn't need to buy any special head lice shampoo! Grin
Don't forget to change his bed linen too! My DDs head was completely clear after using the comb on conditioned hair! I will be keeping a close eye now! Good luck!

lolalotta · 18/12/2012 08:43

I think you can buy the nitty gritty comb in Boots, I bought mine in Waitrose!

Iceaddict · 18/12/2012 14:36

After combing his hair last night I could not find any this morning. Went and got the stuff and checked myself and found 2 in my hair aaahhhh I can't bear it. Used lyclear and will be nit combing daily!! Until panic wears off at least. It's just vile I'm so freaked out by them I hope they're gone! Will be boiling all bed covers shortly!

Vosene do an anti lice shampoo which has tea tree in it.
I bought the nitty gritty defends spray too.
They are SO grim aren't they.

Iceaddict · 18/12/2012 16:15

Thanks will try them I just read about some repellant. I'm obsessed now

mumofoliver · 18/12/2012 19:01

We bought hedrin once which was brilliant. DD had heaps and they were dead within 15 minutes. It also claims to kill some eggs which is needed as you only need to miss one egg and within a few weeks the infestation could be back! We are hopefully all clear but I am itching just thinking about it! Good luck

Iceaddict · 18/12/2012 20:08

Oh don't I was just feeling victorious as we're all lice free! Grin Although I feel like i have them all over me. Nitty gritty on offer on their website with free postage £6 ish

OP posts:
Iceaddict · 18/12/2012 20:09

£6.70

Bumbdeal · 18/12/2012 20:19

Nitty Gritty is free under minor ailments.
Register with the pharmacy and they will dispense it.
Might be the same for the shampoo but not asked for that so do not know.
