Thanks for the advice, I shall do that! Like you said, nothing to lose.

We went for the W5877 WPS Edition 111. Things I really like:
-It's so quiet! It can be spinning at top speed and it doesn't make the whole house vibrate and you can actually carry on a conversation while in the same room.
-Spins at 1600 (our previous machine did 1400). It's not a huge difference but it does reduce drying times fractionally. Need all the help you can get when you have bamboo!
-Special 'Hygiene' programme which adds an extra rinse after the wash (3 rinses total). So whereas before my routine was: rinse, wash, rinse. It's now just: rinse, wash.
-It's quick. Rinse takes about 20 min (old machine at least 30min). Wash at 40C takes 2.5 hours (at least 3 hours on old machine)

Things I don't like:
-There are supposed to be special programmes (e.g. a special nappy programme with a pre-rinse built in, so no need to remember to go back to the machine), but they need to be uploaded by an engineer at extra cost.. bit ridiculous when we're just talking about some software and I've already forked out over a grand for the machine in the first place! Especially as their website implies that these things are all included.

I've written an email to them about the above, but as yet no response. With this and the nappies I sound like I'm a big complainer Grin I'm actually really timid and hate complaining, but been receiving some therapy and learning to stand up for myself... (I still hate it though..)

Ariela · 27/02/2013 11:58

Meant to add yesterday, our local slingmeet/nappuccino (only we're not allowed hot drinks in the room) at the Childrens Centre is called Gentle Parenting rather than 'Alternative Parenting' - we thought the latter sounded a bit exclusive and off putting.

BiscuitCrumbsInBed · 27/02/2013 13:37

Rreow I'm in Islington - are you in London too?? Fancy helping to set up a nappy library?!

Hi Ariela are you new to the nappy chat or are you someone with a new name?? Don't want to be rude & not say hi if you're new.

I'm in Camden, so we're close! Coincidence. I don't have much time currently (work FT) but if you organise a nappucino or something let me know and I will try to attend!

PurplePidjin · 27/02/2013 13:47

Ariela, I'm trying to set something similar up - like an informal discussion group with sling consultant and nappy library - and was thinking Parenting Choices would be a good name?

OP posts:
BiscuitCrumbsInBed · 27/02/2013 14:59

That really is a coincidence! I'll keep you informed if/when I get anything organised...

NappyHappy · 27/02/2013 20:43

Parenting Choices sounds a lot better and sounds like you have choices iyswim.

Well, ds3 has dropped 2 centiles on the weight chart so I have to get him weighed every few weeks. He's at the DR's on Monday about a rash on his arm that's not cleared up with Cetraben so will need steroids.

The HV were totally bemused at my keeping nappy rash at bay/helping it heal without medicated creams etc. methods and nappies. I felt like she was telling me off then got the senior HV down to look at his weight and arm. He did have butt rash though from pooping in his sleep. I nearly asked her how old she was and if she had kids.

My (not the boys, MINE I YELL YOU) 2 skull and cross bone nappies came today, one has a black bow on it meant for a girl but he's still going to wear it!

I'm going to sell the Itti Bitti's, not getting on with them at all, ds2 is a big wetter and they're not lasting long boosted and too narrow underneath for him.

Your washer sounds fab rreow! Grin

PurplePidjin · 28/02/2013 09:30

Yeah, I'm aiming for friendly discussion of all things alternative - slings, nappies, home education, gentle discipline, co-sleeping etc. The aim is for less experienced parents to discuss options with more experienced ones, swap ideas etc. Hopefully it'll stay friendly! I'll have to make sure i mediate...

Rashes suck Sad as does dropping centiles. We're fortnightly due to being on the 1st already otherwise I'd sack off the hv altogether!

OP posts:
NappyHappy · 28/02/2013 11:01

Totally agree with you. I'm sure some of the first time and young mums will find it more in your face and not you're baby should be doing this etc. so they'll feel more at ease. One of the children's workers said the mums felt one of the groups they had up here put them off as it was HV ran, I told them I would help out if they ever started it up again.

We smell of Metanium and the liners are out in force. I'll go HV clinic every other week with him. His feeding did pick up a bit yesterday. I'm used to greedy babies Grin

rrreow · 28/02/2013 13:12

PurplePidjin that sounds really nice! I'd love to find a group like that near me.

I've been offered a 50% refund on my pink nappy, so I'm happy with that.

Oh I must just tell you all about the absolute BARGAIN I found the other day! I got 10 barely used Sandies (in Small) for £16 on eBay! I've been holding off investing too much in size 1s for DS2 just in case stuff doesn't fit and also because I'd prefer BTP stuff because of cost considerations, but I couldn't pass that one up. I also got 8 bamboozles for about £50. So I'm chuffed to bits! I'm really pleased I've started stocking up several months before DS2 is due so I can spread the cost and refrain from impulse purchases. Sad thing is though, I'm pretty much done now... not allowed to spend any more money on nappies Sad

rrreow · 28/02/2013 13:15

And oh my god I hear you about HVs! When one comes to visit after DS2 is born I have a mind to just not let her in.. (although that might raise a red flag..) last time it was an hour of my time wasted with this HV talking to me condescendingly (and way too SLOWLY, I just expelled a baby from my body, not my brain!) about how I must not smoke around baby and I must not shake baby... Oh and if it was really warm I should give baby water (ebf baby..) Hmm

NappyHappy · 28/02/2013 13:46

The usual shit then? I got told off last year when ds2 was asleep on a baby bean bag. I now smile and nod.

If the babies are warm I find putting them in the fridges helps. sarcastic face.

BiscuitCrumbsInBed · 28/02/2013 18:07

Grin at NH putting her kids in the fridge... My HV was a bit bonkers too, harmless though, I don't remember much of those early days. Fab bargains R! Loving a bit of eBay. My 3 wonderoos came today that i got from there for a tenner. They are similar to the real easy but BTP and have some more complicated different types of boosters poppered into them, need to have a proper look later.

R are you free next Friday 8th? There is a real nappy 'flashmob' (!) mass nappy change at the South Bank. There's a group on Facebook, or probably on the real nappies for London website.

NappyHappy · 28/02/2013 20:34

I've heard about that flash mob, Brilliant. I hope they do something like that up here.

Has anyone used Bum genius? Are they any good? I've heard they are and am selling more fluff to fund them. They're not the new elementals, a version or 2 before then.

Almost time for Jamaican Ginger Cake and a brew!

rrreow · 28/02/2013 20:48

BiscuitCrumbsInBed that sounds awesome! Unfortunately I won't be around, leaving to go on holiday that day. Hope they'll do it again sometime.

NH I tried some Bumgenius Freetime but found them very small for a BTP nappy. My DS is 21mo and 75th centile for weight & height. The reviews for it are good though but I'm guessing they're mostly from people who use them on younger babies. Can't say about their other nappies as haven't tried them.

MrsReiver · 01/03/2013 09:24

Hello! I've been awol for a bit but DS arrived last Friday, we've not made the move into cloth yet. He's a long, skinny wee thing so despite weighing 7lb 4 he's in micro nappies. I looked at my BG newborns yesterday and they look HUGE next to my skinny malink.

rrreow · 01/03/2013 09:51

Congrats MrsReiver!! I'm sure he'll be in the reusables soon enough. My DS was born tiny (2.7kg or 5lb 15oz) and I think he went from something like 4th centile to 50th centile in a matter of 3 or 4 weeks.

How are you feeling & coping, is this your first?

PurplePidjin · 01/03/2013 12:11

Congratulations MrsR Thanks R went into cloth at 5 days when his stump came off, the cloth nappies rubbed it!

OP posts:
Ariela · 01/03/2013 12:57

Only been on Mumsnet since more-or-less the start about 2000 so forgotten how many years ago when Justine was battling away to get this off the ground (hasn't she done well) and 'the' place to go was UKMums (anyone remember that? We had a huge real nappy page). My username got changed about (8?10?) years ago as the old one wouldn't login on the 'new' format which BCIB probably won't recall, but been Ariela all that time since. However I rarely post these days - I am of the old fashioned view don't say anything unless you have something constructive to say - which I hope my post was Wink.

I will say I prefered the older format, and speed of things : pre the popularity of Facebook when the pages flicked by at a rate of knots , so that's why you'll now only find me post every now and then!

Feel free to ban me if I don't fit your clique, I really am too long in the tooth to care Grin

PurplePidjin · 01/03/2013 13:22

Hmm Everyone's welcome here Hmm

OP posts:
BiscuitCrumbsInBed · 01/03/2013 14:48

Congratulations MrsR! Thanks and a St Davids too for St David's Day!

Ariela - I was just saying hi because I hadn't seen you post on this thread before. I was being nice, not challenging you / asking for a Mumsnet CV / being cliquey! Why so defensive?! Confused As Pidj said everyone is welcome, and it's always helpful to get different people's advice.

MrsReiver · 01/03/2013 16:10

As a total newbie to this thread I've got to say this is far from a clique, the ladies are really welcoming and friendly, which is what Biscuit was being. Surely it would have been cliquey to ignore you....

Anyway - DS is in cloth this afternoon, much easier to keep track of wet nappies than in sposies.

We're both doing great, he's DS2 but DS1 is nearly 9 so it feels a little like I'm starting all over again!!

PurplePidjin · 01/03/2013 16:14

Yeah, i definitely need more experienced folk - still haven't cracked the blardy night nappies!!

Anyone know how to lanolise? too lazy to google atm

OP posts:
Alamaya · 01/03/2013 17:41

my night nappy for my 22 month old.

Totsbot bamboozle stretchie size 2 with the inner snap in booster folded back over itself at the front. Shes a front sleeper. Then a nappy lady superbooster between the nappy and the wrap and the wrap is a blueberry coverall.

Seems to be working for us xx

BiscuitCrumbsInBed · 01/03/2013 18:04

Thanks MrsR - I try and be a nice person on here not the grumpy mare I often am in RL Hurray for ds2's first cloth bum. What is he wearing?? I didn't start dd in cloth til she was much older so missed out on the cute teenyfits etc.

Alamaya, I'm finding stretchies great for night too - Pidj I have a feeling you've tried those though? In fairness I've only just moved to cloth at night, used sposies for ages, so that may be the thing to do.... We used beaming baby which I really liked, they're 'Eco' sposies and have some kind of cornstarch lining, so don't have the plasticky feel of pampers etc.
