And if so, can I be in it? Dd2 is 2.3, I'm sure she's old enough, I just have to psych myself into doing it, and need someone to bully me.

I am starting this week too- my dd at 22 months. have had potty around the house and she knows what it is and what its for, but havent pushed it at all. Nursery suggested startinf as her "best friend" has started and they think it may be good for them to be trying at same time. What does anyone think about pull ups then - or these "feel wet" nappies.? or do i stick to normal nappies for the beginning before trying her in proper knickers around the house ?

elliott · 03/04/2006 22:00

hmmm. ds2 is 2.4 and I am wondering if he is getting close to ready. He is getting quite keen on the idea of asking to go on the potty but not quite so good at producing when he's got there. Sometimes will announce 'I've done a wee wee' while wearing his nappy but I have no idea whether he knows what he's talking about!
Have made such a hash of ds1 though (4.4 and still having almost daily accidents) that I have no confidence at all about this. Just remind me how I'm supposed to work out if he is ready? I thought ds1 was ready when I started him but he just seems to have got stuck where he was 18 months ago....

eidsvold · 04/04/2006 07:13

tried the feel wet nappies with my dd and they did not work. I guess if your child hates wet they would work but my dd1 is just not bothered - waste of money for us.

Morning ladies. Glad to see this thread is taking off - it makes things so much easier, having people to discuss it with. Rabbitt - My DD is 2 and I am going to go straight to knickers and not use any pull-ups/trainer pants. We took her shopping at the weekend and she chose her own 'big girl knickers' with dora the explorer on them (current obsession!) and she is currently dressing up in them. Friends have advocated the Gina Ford Bk 'Potty training in a week' so we are going to try this approach - straight to knickers so that they can tell the difference between wet and dry very quickly. Am hoping she won't like the feel of wee running down her leg Wink!
Elliott - I think the main signs are awareness of pooing/weeing; ability to follow simple instructions; trys to help take off clothes; can sit still for 5 mins or so; can stay dry for a few hours. There are probably loads more but these are the ones I looked for.

wessexgirl · 04/04/2006 13:58

Got the Little Princess book from the library and dd1 loved it...I now have to read it over and over again, but this is GOOD, right?

She is enjoying sitting on the potty but has not produced anything yet. However, the conversations we are having indicate that she knows exactly what the score is, so I'm hopeful for Friday.

Twirl · 04/04/2006 14:40

Sounds like my DD - it is fab that she likes the book! Smile

elliott · 04/04/2006 20:23

twirl - how on earth can you tell if they can stay dry for a few hours if they are in a nappy? (ds1 can't do this now btw and he's 4.4!) Otherwise he fits the other criteria - though again, its hard to know if he's saying 'I done a wee wee' because he really has or because he thinks its a fun thing to say!!

Passionflower · 04/04/2006 21:27

Count me on for Monday. DD3 is taking antibiotics atm but should be ok by Monday. We tried and failed at half term, but are ready to give it another go. Rewards are M&S jelly babies here.

Twirl · 04/04/2006 21:32

I have been checking her nappy every 2 hours or so to see how wet it is, and also I put a fresh nappy on her before her lunchtime nap and she usually wakes up with a dry nappy, so hopefully this indicates some bowel control!

wessexgirl · 06/04/2006 12:01

I've just made a star chart...And this morning dd1 was pretending to put a teddy on the 'potty' (dd2's stacking cups!) so I reckon we're good to go.

Just need to get a bucket for mucky knickers and maybe a stepstool so she can reach the sink.

Latz · 06/04/2006 19:49

Can I join in please - have got 2 weeks off work specially!

frogs · 06/04/2006 19:55

I hope everybody is raring to go for next week! Am I expected to do the cod-style bullying thing? Cos I shall have to sharpen my tongue before Monday if so...

I'm in btw. Monday it is. and I am not looking forward to it.

DAY ONE IN THE POTTY TRAINING HOUSE

A mixed start - she hasn't got the hang of pulling up and pulling down her knickers yet and tries to sit on the potty with them on - but she has done one wee in the potty properly (YAY!) and one on the sofa (BOO!).

One drawback - she was gagging to stick her star on the star chart but one wasn't enough and she made a fuss about wanting to stick more on. Quick spot of distraction was called for.

My biggest problem at the moment is having dd2 (8 m.o.) on the scene - the reason for the sofa accident was that I had to bring dds downstairs first then go back upstairs to retrieve the star chart and some other gear. I came back to find dd1 on the sofa with the throw over her head (a dead giveaway that she is a bit worried) and sure enough there was a big wet patch under her. Hooray for removable washable covers!

OOOH! As I typed she's just done another wee on the potty. Star time!

Updates later Wink.

wessexgirl · 07/04/2006 11:05

Gawd, this is hard work.

Another near-miss in the kitchen (every time I go in I spot another patch of wee I've missed with the cloth).

Then another in the potty. We're watching a Miffy DVD now as a reward for 3 wees in the potty.

fuzzlepelts · 07/04/2006 11:43

Can I join too!!
DD is 2.3 and constantly taking her nappy off, asking for "wee wee toilet" Smile. Not had much success so far but had parents evening last night and they said they think she is ready and to just go for it - they would support whatever I want to do!! I think this is too good an opportunity to miss so I am starting her off tomorrow morning and packing a large suitcase ready for Monday back at nursery Grin

wessexgirl · 07/04/2006 13:59

She's napping at the moment...I'm looking at her star chart and thinking: 'How many times can one child urinate in a day???' She's got NINE stars, plus 3 misses, all before lunch. Is this normal?

Poor old dd2 wasn't getting a look-in so decided she might as well go to sleep.

BingoStingo · 07/04/2006 14:00

do you want fish in put?
god dh wasnt pc back will ahev to log on later

wessexgirl · 07/04/2006 14:11

Piscine wisdom more than welcome Wink.

frogs · 07/04/2006 14:44

Fish input may be essential, we've made a last-minute decision to go away for a few days from Sunday night, so won't be online.

Latz · 07/04/2006 18:51

Well all set now. Shopping done. Loads of big girl pants and a jumbo pack of choccy buttons. Roll on Monday!!! :o

BingoStingo · 07/04/2006 19:08

sorry am knackered tonight had bad nights sleep fo no real reason
will be perky tomorrow

wessexgirl · 07/04/2006 19:45

Well, day one is over and dd1 had NO accidents all afternoon - all wees made their way into the potty.

But she was weeing 2-3 times an HOUR. I feel like a potty-emptying chain-flushing hand-washing star-sticking praising MACHINE! I'm as knackered as cod (but still owe myself a large glass of wine tonight).

Will try to limit putting her on the potty to twice per hour tomorrow for sanity's sake Grin.

HellyBelly · 08/04/2006 12:52

Can I join too please???

Ds has just turned 3. Have tried lots but not 'properly' iyswim. I'm a childminder and have lots going on so have found it hard to just go for it. Had a big chat with him a couple of days ago and explained that the nappies would run out on Friday so Saturday morning he would wear big boy pants. He seemed quite excited about it as he likes the sound of the reward at the end of it Wink but each time he's worn pants before, he's cried and panicked after a while and said he needs his nappy. I was advised not to force him if he was this upset so fingers crossed he'll not be like that this time!

Anyway, pants went on at 11.30am (i had lie in as feeling like crap - bad cold) and they are still on. He's sat on the toilet twice and the potty a few times and tried and said 'oh dear, nothing coming out' - he pushes and pushes and we've just said to relax and it will happen when it happens.

Anyway, fingers crossed for everyone else and wish me luck (I'm going to need it as he can be very stubborn when he wants to be!!!)

:)

HellyBelly · 08/04/2006 13:19

Still no wees or accidents but he's just shouted 'i did it mummy' and had a tiny little poo in his potty (size of malteser!) :)

Just off out to a friends and taking potty with us - warned her it could be messy but she wants us round so I'll update you later.
