let's share some ideas of make do and mend entertainment.

I used to love a book called Something to Do when I was little. It was divided into months of the year and had a bit of poetry and ideas for things to make and play that month, which didn't cost much if anything.

My dad used to make cotton reel engines..and I loved it when he did, I haven't made one for years but now I feel quite inspired

zippitippitoes, you are a woman after my own heart :) I am desperate for the expression make do and mend to become part of our culture again. It would be good on so many levels :)

zippitippitoes, thrift is a lovely word and absolutely brings back memories of my Gran.

Having a dressing up box with lots of different outfits is great fun. (Although I don't think dressing up in mummys clothes is as appealing to todays children as most children wear little adults clothes anyway :( )

H would be laughing at this thread as he says I would have been at home in the 1920's :)

making ships and cars out of cardboard boxes are hours of fun as are turning the kitchen table upside down and doing the same.

I use bean polls and blankets and make wigwams in the garden for both ds (5) and dd(16) they both love it.

zippitippitoes · 28/03/2006 09:45

my grandma recycled everything, lived in a tiny cottage but had loads and loads squirrelled away..

we used to be very keen on making slides on the stairs had a book shelf which we could lift the shiny painted shelves off and rigged them up on the stairs or off the beds..also slide down the stairs on tea trays

getting all round the room without touching the floor ..involves swinging on curtains though

yes! I made these with a bunch of girls at the girls group I run a few weeks ago. I was thrilled as they are young teens and they loved it!

(Never new what they were called though!)

winnie · 28/03/2006 13:00

georginarf · 28/03/2006 13:01

oh! I LOVE those fortunre telling things. Haven't done one for ages - might do one now to help decide a few things. Can't be any worse than any other method....
