Did you breast feed or bottle straight away?

Would like to know what others did with new born as i am thinking of using formula milk instead of breast feeding. I know they say its beter for the baby but looking back to last time was just hell simply because i was so shattarted (only managed 3 wks with ds) Would i have to take a tub of formula milk to the hospital with me? and bottles? lol i have no clue so as much info would be a great help!

I breast fed my DD for the first 7 weeks, but i think that if you are intending on bottle feeding from the start that the hospital supply milk and bottles for you. Smile

Gillian76 · 18/03/2006 12:18

My sister bottle fed from day 2 and the hospital supplied all the milk, etc.

Blu · 18/03/2006 12:22

Why not check with your midwife what is supplied in your local hospital?
If yu're concerned about the health aspect, Dunnyjo, 3 weeks is well worth it anyway - or even one week as then your baby would get your colostrum Smile
Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I'm planning to bottle feed from the word go this time and the hospital will supply formula - should give you a choice of the main brands as well.
Am also being strong and ignoring the "are you not even going to try?" comments, BF last time was hideous! (for both me and DS) so you have my full support.
Do you think we'll still need breast pads or do you not get the leaking thing at all if you don't even start?

Hospitals usually supply bottles and formula, but double check with your MW in case yours doesn't. And take your own nappies and cotton wool with (they don't like you using baby wipes on newborns)

blondie82 · 18/03/2006 13:39

i leaked really badly. had to keep changing every 10 minute because i was soaked!!! Blush
ended up wearing a towel round my chest too when just around the house!

GDG · 18/03/2006 13:40

If you formula feed from the start they have little bottles there for you. YOu don't need to take milk.

JoolsToo · 18/03/2006 14:12

dd - tried bf in hospital but wasn't keen and neither was she - next two bottle feed from the off - no regrets

Dunnyjo · 18/03/2006 14:48

to be ohnest i feel so relived its not just me, i just dont think i could go down that route again with trying to breast feed then feeling low because i could not keep up with it. At least i can let dh take over while i get some rest.
I will talk to mw on monday and check what they supply at that hospital.
I was going to use fragrance free baby wipes this time also because those cotton wool things were a pain (especialy trying to get up and get water stuff ready after c-s with no help!) Just want to make it so much easier this time round as last time was just panack that i was not doing everything right.
Why cant you use baby wipes?

i dont think they like you to use anything until after the baby is 6 weeks.... all the things thats got chemicals in? (if chemicals is the right word?)

izzybiz · 18/03/2006 15:55

i bottle fed both my children from day 1 for my own selfish reasons.Wink

with my Ds 13 years ago, i used cotton wool and water for nappy changing, but with Dd who is 22 months i used fragrance free baby wipes from birth and she was fine with them.

Good luck, just relax!

amber5 · 18/03/2006 23:25

Dunnyjo, you know they say every baby is different. why not give bf a chance first? you can always go on to bottles if it doesn't work out, but once baby has had a bottle it would be very difficult to go back to bf.
on the subject of leaking - i have bf my two and i never leak between feeds, maybe because the milk is used?
I know they say no wipes, but I know what you mean about the hassle of water. with my first I used water every time, with current 2 month old I use water during the day at home, and wipes during the night or when we're out. I think you just have to do what feels right for you with all these things.

chipmonkey · 18/03/2006 23:45

Johnson's baby wipes are great for household cleaning! hate to think what they do to a poor baby!

Elf1981 · 18/03/2006 23:50

re babywipes

We took wipes into hospital when I had my DD (she's nearly 24 weeks now). I had a c-section and when a midwife came in one evening to change baby (I was still holed up in bed unable to move!) she wouldn't use the wipes on my daughter and used cotton wool, but mentioned it was our choice. So you can use wipes (you may get snotty mw's passing comments) but if they ever change your baby, they will use wool and wipes if that's their preference.

Elf1981 · 18/03/2006 23:52

re breastpads

I hate to think how many I used. I had to change several times a day and sometimes had to change my tops three or four times a day as my boobs just went on and on!
As I mentioned, DD is nearly 24 weeks and I am now getting away with one pair of pads a day / can use the lilypadz without too much stress. Though I'm now going back to work so will have to see how my body adjusts to that, I've got loads of wooley waistcoats to wear over my tops to hide the milk in the first few days back in case of any accidents!

Dunnyjo · 19/03/2006 21:00

with the water thing trying to move was extreamly hard and the mw was not exactly great help tuting every time i pressed the buzzer! Angry i dont use johnsons because of the high perfume in it as ds aways had a rash when i used them, will just use frafgrance free wipes.

I breast fed for 3 weeks...it was also hell but was really upset when i had to stop (ds was losing weight and drinking too slowly)

If i had another child i would try breastfeeding again first as i loved the bond etc and would hope i would be successful the next time

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 20/03/2006 11:53

bottle fed as sono as out of hospital with Becky - she REFUSED to latch and I was getting tired and stressed.

MAde sure everything was ready at home before i went in.

Re boobs/pads - probably just my body, but i didnt leak with either baby. My milk didnt come in with Jess at all so she was on bottles after 4 days of trying to BF.

lucy5 · 20/03/2006 12:05

I breastfed. My friend had real trouble breastfeeding dd1 and sailed through with ds. Might be worth giving it a go even if its only for a couple of days, so baby gets colostrum [sp]

Piffle · 20/03/2006 12:09

b/f before cord was cut both times. Found it very easy for some reason so had no reason to look at any other feeding method. I would urge you to try the first few feeds at least for colostrum benefits- and you never know you may find it easier, try contacting an NCT bf counsellor who could support you straight after the birth perhaps? To change your experience this time?.
