What has been the longest time you have been away from your child(if at all).

I haven't as yet, but at the end of the year I am planning on going away for a 10 days-it's on work and I can't take dd(4)

Has anyone had experience of this?

Bumping this as DH and I about to go away for 11 nights with DD, so interested also.

When DD was 13 months old I went skiing for 7 nights my mum looked after DD as I was then a SP.

fimbo · 16/03/2006 14:48

My dd went away for 2 days last week with her school, that is the longest she has ever been away from me. I have never spent time away from my ds who is 2. Dh has been away for longer periods through work etc, my dd cries when daddy has to go away.

I've been away for up to 7 nights on a couple of occassions. It's always to do with work and I hate it (a few days are fine but a full week is just too much). I'm supposed to be going away to the far east in a fortnight too, not looking forward to it. They are fine when I'm away but become very clingy when I come back, usually when I'm jetlagged so double the work.

Issymum · 16/03/2006 14:52

About 7 days - always for work. My boss has 'offered' me AsiaPac, so I'm interested in the responses to this as that will mean one or two longish trips a year.

LadyTophamHatt · 16/03/2006 14:53

about 6 hours!!!

never been away rom them overnight!

cutekids · 16/03/2006 14:53

my parents (very rarely) offer to have children for a night (i'm talking once, maybe twice a year!).however, my dd1-nearly 8-has asked if she can have some time-on her own-with my mum and dad at the weekend so i told my mum this and she seemed quite happy to have her.i'll still miss her though....!couldn't bear to be away from any of them for more than one night.hubbie, however, frequently works away.

madmarchhare · 16/03/2006 14:55

4 days when me and DH went away, and a few other 2/3 day breaks. My mum or mil had DS, 2.3.

Blackduck · 16/03/2006 15:13

5 days at a time - about every two months from when I went back to work (he was 4 months...). He's now nearly three and I am looking for a job with no aways, as I actually think it is harder now than when he was a babe...

lucy5 · 16/03/2006 15:15

Last weekend for 2 nights when I had to go to funeral in Uk. Dd is 5.

WideWebWitch · 16/03/2006 15:15

14 days as I was working away last year and ds goes to his dad's every other weekend. So I would see him on Sunday night and then I'd be back the following weekend but then he'd be away and so I wouldn't see him until the following Friday night. With dd it's 5 days, for the same reason but she was always here at the weekend. Oh, I tell a lie, ds went to India with his dad for nearly 3 weeks when he was 4.

mummygow · 16/03/2006 15:22

lucy5 I was at afuneral last weekend too!! Any chance it was the same one as there was over 1000 people at it (I thought over 500 originally but friennd said over 1000)

Anyway never more than 1 or 2 nights away from my kids!!

nulnulcat · 16/03/2006 15:24

im a single parent and my mum lives 200 miles away so from when i stopped breastfeeding at about 6 months dd has been to stay with her for up to 2 weeks at a time on a regular basis to give me a break tbh i didnt miss her as much as i thought i would - does that make me sound awful! and she hasnt seemed to miss me when i ring to talk to her she is always too busy to talk to me!

elastamum · 16/03/2006 15:30

We have been away for work mostly about a week 3 or 4 times since we had the boys. They always have grandma and grandpa to stay and our nanny on hand and both adults and boys really enjoy it. We also try to get at least one long weekend a year away somewhere nice. The children are perfectly happy as they know what is happening and get spoilt rotten. We always call every day for a chat and they always expect a present when we come back!!

fairyjay · 16/03/2006 15:35

Two weeks when we were in the Maldives - must be a rotten mum!

PiccadillyCircus · 16/03/2006 15:37

Have been away from DS (2.3) for 3 nights. Have been away from DD (25 weeks) for 5 hours.

Wallace · 16/03/2006 15:45

When ds was 3.5 we left him for a week with my mum. Dd was having surgery at a hospital 150 miles away, and although we could have taken him with us, we knew we would want to be focussing on dd.

Dd has only ever been away from us overnight.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 16/03/2006 15:45

10 days last summer.... Dad took Jess to scotland, me and DH went to butlins! I was 32 weeks pg tho so I wasnt technically without a child!

madmarchhare · 16/03/2006 16:38

Agree Blackduck, its getting harder the older he gets.

Hulababy · 16/03/2006 16:39

DD is nearly 4 and so far longest we have left her is about 24 hours. Not had any reason to leave her for any longer.

juliab · 16/03/2006 16:41

one night in eight long years! (and I spent the whole night fretting!)

Aimsmum · 16/03/2006 16:42

DD is 5 and the longest has been overnight from about 7pm til about 12 lunchtime the next day!

lacrimosa · 16/03/2006 16:43

3 hours from dd[during nursery]
6 from ds [at school]
3 hours at wed night to see a movie with dp, though they are always asleep before babysitter comes

CountessDracula · 16/03/2006 16:52

Twice for a week each, Tobago and Grenada
This year we went to New York for 5 days

The odd weekend here and there

My mum and dh's mum both up for having her we are v lucky

cupcakes · 16/03/2006 16:54

One night is the most and only on two occasions: once I left them with dh and went out with a friend and another time mil had them and dh and I went away for two days (one night).
Reeeally wish it was more. The older they get the more I crave a grown up break.
