To Smack or Not to Smack

My ds is six months old, but my niece who is two and a half stays with us a lot of the time. I have occasionally (twice) smacked her on her well-padded, nappied, bum. I know its not painful, but I'm not sure if I should. . .

I'm not quite sure what a troll is. . . . but maybe a little more detail might help.

My niece actually lives with us during the week, so disciplining is left to me and dh to decide on, during that time.

I asked her to stop stamping on a book several times and she carried on, tried distraction and it didn't work, so really gently smacked her on her nappy.

I was wondering, does it have any long term affect. Not sure if I'm confortable with it regardless.

shes getting older now so i have started threatening her with the naughty children home she looks worried and stops then as she thinks im going to send her away however i sometimes think this is more cruel than a quick smack on the bum!

i know. when i say something similar to ds he bursts into tears and yet shouting/smacking/angry mum has no effect. but i feel awful saying something like mummy will send you to the place for naughty kids.

If it were me, I would say "you do not stamp on your books" and take the book away. If she got anotehr book/toy and stamped on it again I would say "no, you do not stamp on your books/toy, if you do it again you will have to sit on the step" and if she did then she would sit on the step. I would then say "Mummy put you on the step because you were stamping on your books, you must not stamp on your books because you will break them etc" pretty much a la Supernanny I suppose. It works here shrugs
