To Smack or Not to Smack

My ds is six months old, but my niece who is two and a half stays with us a lot of the time. I have occasionally (twice) smacked her on her well-padded, nappied, bum. I know its not painful, but I'm not sure if I should. . .

my brother and his wife smack there children and when i looked after them there was an instant when i smacked them, told sil what i had done they got another smack then when she told my brother they got smacked again and sent to there rooms (they had been really bad and were 6 and 8 so knew what they were doing) i have smacked my 2 year old a couple of times on her bottom not hard enough to make her cry but now i threaten it and she stops doing whatever she was doing its usually something dangerous and distraction, naughty step toy confiscation does not work with her

thelennox · 16/03/2006 14:09

Sometimes I smack my oldest but always end up feeling awful about it, especially as i ususally do it when i am angry.
Am i the world's worst mum Sad? I feel it sometimes.

Rhubarb · 16/03/2006 14:10

much as I hate to say this. This thread was started by a troll, God knows what they wanted out of it. But perhaps if you want real advice on smacking you should start a new thread? I wouldn't like to post my experiences on this knowing that a troll is getting off on them.

thelennox · 16/03/2006 14:14

Quite right! Although maybe a troll would have better luck at getting my child to do as he is told!!

Tortington · 16/03/2006 14:24

nowt wrong wi' it.

Angeliz · 16/03/2006 14:25

i'm with Enid on this. These threads make me sick to think someone could get amusement from this.
Nulnulcat, 3 smacks is a bit excessive though!

nulnulcat · 16/03/2006 14:35

i had been in a shop selling beds with them and they had been practicing there trampoling skills and wouldnt stop when told! brother and sil are really strict parents and this was about 12 years ago now when there wasnt all these smacking issues, i remember getting smacked at school then again by my mum when she was told what i had done and the old wait til your father gets home when i knew i really would get in trouble!! this was 30 odd years ago and from what most of my friends say didnt just happen in my house

lunarx · 16/03/2006 14:50

i'm against smacking. my kids or anyone elses.

suzywong · 16/03/2006 14:55

this has probably already been posted but IME, there is not point in smacking, none at all. It's bullying at it's worst form, it only gives relief to the parent momentarily and the kids learn nothing from it

I used to smack ds1 very very occasionally when I was at the end of my tether, when he was about 3 and a half, but I promised him a while ago that I would never do it again and I haven't and his behviour improved

have done the old smacking my hands together to make a thunderous and shocking clap behind his bum once or twice and that seems to do the trick IYSWIM

oh god I should have read tohe OP
