My poor Ds - Left in a right state today

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved · 02/09/2012 04:15

I am up late researching bad nappy rash in toddlers ... A carer had a trial day today & took my ds (2.5 yrs) to the library (with my dad hanging around in the background for safety).

She either left poor Ds with a pooey nappy for hours or scrubbed at him so hard to get poo off, or didn't clean him properly so poo on even after changing... Or from what I can gather all three.

My poor darling was screaming in pain by the time I got to see him at 5, took me ages to work out what was the matter as it was so shocking he could be in so much pain so unexpectedly... When he finally let me take off his nappy, poo was encrusted all around his underside :( he cried for about an hour & a half which is so unlike him.

Then big mistake... At 9 ish I put cream on (e45 I thought sudocreme would stop air) after a few hrs of no nappy, but left it to soak in as rubbing it looked too sore, & as soon as it touched him he screamed again, such 'pain screams' and had to sit him in a luke warm bath for 40 mins to soak off the cream. he's woken up now crying as well.

What shall I do to make it heal quickly? Awful to see him like this

Vaseline better? Nothing at all? Thrush cream? Yoghurt? Baths? No baths? Savlon? Sudocrem? Dipping wipes in vinegar?

Hes never had bad nappy rash so a bit lost...

(Wibble. She was supposed to have experience of childcare)

Also very concerned about his emotional reaction to this, he already is constipated mostly cos he thinks it's 'messy', & was just working on that with him (& aid of lactilose), but now he's going to be so scared... Any tips?

As much fresh air as poss.

Have a wee word with nhs24 before you do anything else.

Obviously calpol & nurofen as well. If my undercarriage was stinging I'm sure I'd be wanting some painkillers.

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 02/09/2012 04:22

Oh god. Horrible.

No advice apart from suggestion Calpol... Sad and to go mental with the carer

DaydreamDolly · 02/09/2012 04:26

Poor thing Sad

Metanium very good for bad nappy rash. Hope he's better soon.

Metanium better than Sudocrem once the rash is there IMO - Sudocrem is only useful to prevent it.

Poor thing :(

We use johnsons nappy cream which really seems to help. Not sure what ingredient it is. Ds had bad nappy rash the other day (we were too quick to change nappy so he had a tiny post-poo "fart" which we didn't realise. Only a tiny amount but it can mess things up, as you know) and it went dirt if crusty and would not clear. A pharmacist friend told me that means it had turned a little fungal and one application if an anti fungal cream and suddenly it was better. If its bad keep an eye out for that as we had never had more than a little nappy rash easily cured with fresh air and cream.

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved · 02/09/2012 04:44

Oh thank you for quick replies. can you buy metanium from any chemist? Will it sting him? I will ring nhs tomorrow, hope they dont think it's too trivial. Poor Ds, I hate that someone did this to him, through ignorance not malice but results the same :(

Why do people LIE when they are applying for jobs like this? It's DANGEROUS. I hate majority of human race, & will be sticking to my instinct of not letting them out of my sight with Ds. Was swayed by people saying I was making it too difficult for the final people on my list to show they could take care of him, cos the dynamic is too difficult if I am there too (I feel guilty though - perpetual mothers state of being I know and all that).

And yes, much calpol has been given (given in tiny amountsdap lots of spoonfuls & a few spoons of water at the end to make him feel like he'd had lots of medicine - devious mother I am!).

Bepanthen works really well. And lots of people say metanium is great but both of mine seem to get much more sore with it but both have sensitive skin issues so I think they just react to something that's in it.

WandaDoff · 02/09/2012 06:24

Agree with Bepanthen Smile

It has the colour & consistency of dairylea but it's always done the trick with my 3.

This cleared up a bad episode of nappy rash for my DD so quickly, I was amazed:
www.weleda.co.uk/baby-skin-care/calendula-nappy-change-cream-75ml/invt/105009/
It worked for my friends too, honestly it magic stuff! Good luck, I hope your ds feels better soon xxx

lolalotta · 02/09/2012 06:48

You can buy it in Waitrose and health shops!

Liskey · 02/09/2012 07:14

Another vote for metanium here - very good for nappy rash with DD. Also alternate calpol and ibufren to help with the pain. Hope he's feeling better soon.

Liskey · 02/09/2012 07:16

Forgot to say you can buy metanium in tesco as well.

MimsyBorogroves · 02/09/2012 07:17

I find bepanthen great on a rash that looks "open" or more like a burn. It is amazing stuff. Metanium seems better on a drier rash (one that is caught earlier), but it tends to make DS2 worse if he is already sore.

Trazzletoes · 02/09/2012 07:23

I also use metanium. Once when I was applying it, DS cried because he said it was sore but I don't know whether that's because the cream stung or the rash was sore anyway IYSWIM. I would still rather use it though as it heals nappy rash amazingly fast and forms a barrier to stop it getting irritated by more wee/poo whereas if you pop him in a nappy again with nothing on his bottom, as soon as he wees/poos = more pain anyway.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 02/09/2012 07:28

Oaty baths are brilliant too!

Ds had a milder version of what you describe after not wiping his bum at nursery in the early stages of potty training.

Bepanthen was fab but also tie some oats in a muslin or tights ad add to the bath. The water goes all creamy/ cloudy and the oats put magic stuff in the water.

Hope your ds is feeling better! :)

Egg white on the bottom is supposed to be very good, haven't tried it myself though.

Trazzletoes · 02/09/2012 14:12

Oh and don't use wipes. Cotton wool and warm water is the way to go. I know someone who recommends doing something with camomile tea(?!) but I can't exactly remember . Might be google able?!

bobbledunk · 02/09/2012 14:26

Poor thing, hope he's better now. Dd's had nappy rash a couple of times and sudocream cleared it up within a day.

readyforno2 · 02/09/2012 14:41

Baby oil and cotton wool to clean, lots of fresh air and metanium. Frequent changes too.
Is he teething?

butterfingerz · 02/09/2012 17:38

I would keep it simple, plain water + cotton wool for cleaning and plenty of fresh air. If he's in the house, just let him have a bare bum.

My DS had head to toe chicken pox at 7 months old, literally not a clear patch of skin on him. Lots of baths with calamine and tea tree oil healed him up a treat.

I don't think putting lots of creams on will help unless it's a very thin layer, fresh air really is the best healer ime.

Malachite · 02/09/2012 17:43

I agree with the others about Metanium - make sure you get the yellow one. It has worked wonders on my son's nappy rash. Also avoid wet wipes as they will sting. Just cotton wool and water for nappy changes and as much time with his nappy off as possible. Good luck finding someone better to care for your boy!

Cupcakes24 · 02/09/2012 17:43

Really whisk up some egg whites and 'pat' on the area as long as the skin isnt broken. I have no idea why this works but it did for my two.

scottishmummy · 02/09/2012 17:46

give him some paediatric meds
sudocreme is good, and nappy off to air
no vinegar wipes, hell that will sting
