Just a wee question for parents of boys!

Feel a bit silly asking this, but what age do boys usually learn to wee standing up?!

Dp and I are acutely aware that ds1 doesn't have a male role model at home - although he's got lovely uncles and sees his Daddy - but not often weeing (although he does sometimes ask if he can watch - which puts a few of them off..!! Grin )

He's 4, and knows about weeing standing up but at the moment is refusing to try. So I'm doing my usual worrying thing about what's going to happen when he starts school and all the other boys are weeing standing up - but then I've got no idea if that will be the case!

My son is 4 next month and still wees sat down, also starting school in Sept so will watch post with interest Smile

waterfalls · 14/03/2006 14:04

DS only sat for a wee for a couple of weeks, I soppose it depends what they prefer, He will stand in his own time, probably when he is in a hurry to get back to something, its not anything to worry aboutSmile

i AM CURRENTLY TRYING TO TEACH DS TO SHAKE HIS WILLY WHEN HE HAS FINISHED WHICH HE THINKS IS MOST AMUSING[GRIN]

ds1 was four and it was when he started school. Dh always sits down so ds1 had never seen it done before. First time at home was a disaster and mop and bucket. Asked why he didn't sit down anymore and simple answer was his friends all stood up. His friends probably had better aim to. I wouldn't worry about it. Aim's got better, a bit and he did it when he wanted to.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/03/2006 14:08

I think my DS1 learned to wee standing up at the playgroup/co-op, so when he was under 3. And the fact he occassionally gets to wee on a tree (when caught out) encourages the habit.

I'm sure lots of four year olds are still weeing sitting down. Your DS1 will learn to pee standing up when he starts peeing with groups of boys.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 14/03/2006 14:11

can you put something on the bowl, like a sticker or something for him to aim for

dont know much really as boys watched their dad

mckenzie · 14/03/2006 14:12

my DS has always stood up to wee. I think it was just from copying Dad and pretending to be a fireman and using his 'hose' to put out the fire in the bottom of the toilet pan Smile

Bozza · 14/03/2006 14:13

Don't worry I think he will start doing it as he sees other boys. It's not really that difficult a skill to pick up for boys, is it?

DS was at nursery so probably got the idea from there. Not sure.

On the "shaking the drips" bit - DH has successfully taught DS to do this. Anyway he was having a wee before his bath and shook his willy as usual. Only 1yo DD happened to be watching - she found this highly amusing and reached out to have a go herself. Grin Similarly when DS was having a naked strop - jumping up and down with all his bits shaking about.

iota · 14/03/2006 14:13

my ds1 is in yr 2 and still pees sitting down

GDG · 14/03/2006 14:14

Does he not go to nursery? Ds1 always sat down at first as that's how you train them to, but at nursery he switched to standing up because the older boys did.

Ds2 is 3.4 and has been trained for about 6 months and he doesn't wee standing up yet.

Tbh, dh sits down half the time anyway! Lazy oik Grin

GDG · 14/03/2006 14:15

Ds1 and ds2 wipe their willy with a bit of toilet paper, rather than shaking it!

Bink · 14/03/2006 14:15

Know just how you feel. Ds sat to wee (despite having a dad at home) & refused to do otherwise and I worried he just wouldn't get it - then within a term of school (which he started at 4.5) he was insouciantly standing-up weeing (even no-hands and chatting over his shoulder with no mis-aim) as if he'd never done anything else. So don't worry at all.

GDG · 14/03/2006 14:15

Dottydot · 14/03/2006 14:17

thanks all - MN is so reassuring - I've been feeling like ds is the last 4 year old in the world not to be weeing standing up...

He goes to nursery and pre-school but is a very strong minded little tike, and peer pressure just doesn't work. I think he's probably not doing it because he knows we'd like him to!! But we're not mentioning it now (we have been on and off for a while) and will leave it. He's also gets v. stressed about mess (we've told him it doesn't matter, honest!) and would absolutely hate to miss the target, so to speak, so I think this is probably bothering him aswell.

Dottydot · 14/03/2006 14:18

GDG - ds1 also wipes his willy with toilet paper - again it's the mess thing - he needs to be all clean and tidy - aarrggghhh!!

GDG · 14/03/2006 14:18

Oh yes, ds1, almost 5, gets quite upset if it goes over the edge of the toilet! He hates mess too!

serenity · 14/03/2006 14:18

Neither DS1 (yr3) or DS2 (yr1) wee standing up at home although they've seen Dh do it countless times. I've actually got no idea what they do at school, there are definitely urinals in the (very stinky!) boys toilets. I'll have to ask when they get back from school Grin

Nemo1977 · 14/03/2006 14:20

Ds is 2.5yrs and as soon as he trained 2mths ago he would only go standing up...absolute nightmare at the time but I suppose easier in the long run. He is also a shaker when he is finished.

The only reason he did it was from soooo much time watching his daddy..lol

Posey · 14/03/2006 14:21

Mine sits, also wipes his willy (hates dribbles!) but at the pre-school I work in its pretty evenly split between sitters and standers.

SorenLorensen · 14/03/2006 14:24

Ds1 is 9 and still wees sitting down at home - but at school he stands up because "the toilets are horrible". I will try and encourage ds2 to learn to wee standing up before he goes to school in September for the same reason. Have you ever seen boys' toilets in primary schools ?

I've heard a ping pong ball is a good thing to aim at...

Dottydot · 14/03/2006 14:29

We had a great moment which we're still teasing our v. good and patient friend about - last summer we went on holiday with friends and their baby and ds1 went off to watch the bloke do a wee and came back excitedly reporting that "Uncle xxxx doesn't shake his willy, he squeezes it!". Grin The things you find out about when you have kids - he is of course known now as "squeezer"..!

DS is 3.5 and has been completely dry for about 10 months. In the last month or so he has decided that he prefers to stand now. He can go by himself but for some reason if I'm there he wants me to come with him and me to hold his willy and aim. Lazy.

crazydazy · 14/03/2006 16:49

My DS is 3 and is 4 in May. He calls it a "big boy's wee" when he stands up and only does it when he can be bothered or just after Daddy has just done one. He sometimes forgets to shake though and usually have to change whatever he is wearing. Smile
