Can you go from crib type cot to toddler bed without cotbed?

Yes you can.
Both my DCs moved from cot to toddler bed. DS moved at around 2yo when he had managed to climb out of the cot (and fall rather heavily) two nights in a row. By the third night he had a toddler bed.

marge2 · 22/08/2012 18:59

DS1 was pretty much exactly 2 when we moved hin from his cot into a proper adult single bed, because DS2 needed the cot. We turned the cot into a cotbed when Ds2 was 2 and a half-ish. He stayed in that until he reached the end. Can't remember when but maybe aged 4 ish?

StarlightMcKenzie · 22/08/2012 19:06

Haven't got the space in my room for a cotbed sized cot but want Ds out of my bed now.

Don't want to buy small cot now and have to buy bigger cot later. Have Ds' old toddler bed for him later. Will we get away with it?

It's our 3rd you'd think we'd have a clue by now.....

Whats the difference between a cotbed and a toddler bed. I thought a cotbed was a large cot that converted to a toddler bed. Dd's toddler bed is the same size as a cotbed.

With ds, he went straight from small cot to an adult sized bed. With dd I got her a toddler bed, because it easier to change the sheets when she has a toilet accident.

StarlightMcKenzie, how small is the cot you are looking at. Our cot was 120cm by 60cm. Dd's toddler bed is 140cm by 70cm.

Both my children were two and half when they changed from cot to bed. I think you will get away with it.

StarlightMcKenzie · 22/08/2012 23:34

Lol, I haven't looked at any cots, just the space between our bed and the radiator. Ds' toddler bed is a Thomas one with no bars.

Mine both went straight from cot to adult single bed at 2 usher, or perhaps a little earlier. Couldn't see the point of a cot bed.

pigleychez · 23/08/2012 18:25

Both my girls moved into a toddler bed at 18mths.

LeenaJacob · 24/08/2012 12:30

I would think its fine, the recommended age to move is around 2 anyway. I do find toddler beds are just a bit easier to move them into that an adult bed, but some of my friends have gone straight to adult beds

WildWorld2004 · 24/08/2012 12:41

Excuse me if i sound dumb but what is a toddler bed? Are they those small beds that is just like a cot bed and a complete waste of money.

My dd went from cot to normal bed.

BeeHaveBeeQuiet · 24/08/2012 12:42

Both my DD and DS were about a month past their 2nd birthdays when we converted their cotbeds into beds.

lovechoc · 24/08/2012 12:48

DS1 went from a cot to a double bed, and DS2 will soon be going into that same double bed (as DS1 is on the bottom bunk in his own room, too scared to sleep on the top bunk yet). Ultimate goal is to have both boys sharing a room by the end of the year.

Have never had a cotbed, or a toddler bed. Seemed like a waste of money, tbh. You get more value for money putting them in a regular bed.

lovechoc · 24/08/2012 12:49

Oops, meant to add that DS1 went into the double bed at 23 months, and DS2 is still in his cot at 25 months. Hoping to move DS2 into double bed fairly soon (either end of this month or next).

lovechoc · 24/08/2012 12:50

WildWorld I thought I was the only parent in the UK that actually doesn't think much of this cotbed/toddlerbed hype! Wink

ReallyTired · 24/08/2012 13:05

The advantage of a toddler bed is that its easier to wash the bedding when they have a toilet accident. If you want a toddler bed then you can get one very cheaply off ebay and just buy a new matress. The toddler bed has built in side protectors and is lower to the ground.

We plan to buy dd a high quality single bed when she is older (and less likely to piss in it!)

If you have the space then cotbed that converts from a cot to a toddler bed can be useful. However the are lots of ways of sorting out the sleeping arrangments of small people.

LilRedWG · 24/08/2012 13:12

DD went from cot to single bed.

lovechoc · 24/08/2012 13:13

You can get mattress protectors fairly cheap from all the supermarkets to protect against bedtime accidents when they wet/soil the bed at the toddler stage, and it's not that difficult to change bedding on a single/double bed if you have second or third set ready to put on it. The mattress DS1 slept on at that age was absolutely fine no smell or staining but then he had dry nights before dry days at that age.

ReallyTired · 24/08/2012 13:20

Mattress protectors don't protect the duvet. Its easier to fit a toddler duvet into the washing machine. Although I suppose there is no reason why you couldn't use a toddler duvet on an adult sized bed.

BeeHaveBeeQuiet · 24/08/2012 13:42

Thought I'd add that we are currently about to buy a single bed for my DS who is 3.9 (which means he has been in his cotbed for about 3 years). We have always used a full size single duvet on his cotbed. It means there is extra width for warmth, and the extra length can be tucked under the end of the mattress. For us it also means that we dont have the extra expense of buying single duvet/covers at the same time as buying the single bed.

suedpantsoffem · 24/08/2012 13:49

In my experience, kids rarely fall out of bed after a couple of nights getting used to it - and when they do, they don't wake up anyway! Found my DDs fast asleep on the floor several times!
And I don't get how it's easier to wash bed linen for a cot/toddler bed than adult size linen?
Still seems like a waste of money to buy a small bed which will only be used for two-three years at most, plus all the linen for it, when kids can go straight to full size single bed????

BenedictsCumberbitch · 24/08/2012 13:54

DD went into a toddler bed that was capable of extending when she was 2, she only moved out of that when she was 8 and even then only because our old double bed was going spare. We have just had today DS's new bunk beds delivered and he is 2.6. Gonna try and put them up tonight and see how he fares!

Foshizzle · 24/08/2012 13:55

Both DC moved into single beds at 17 months (have just moved younger DC), although they co-slept until then so moved from our bed, rather than a cot.

We have the Thuka Trendy beds which have side rails. Normal mattress protector from Ikea, Huggies mattress lining thingies when potty training, standard single sized (Ikea sizes) bedding. Never used gro-bags and just went straight to pillows and duvets but had there been an issue I just would have tucked a flat sheet sideways over the duvet.

ReallyTired · 24/08/2012 14:34

"And I don't get how it's easier to wash bed linen for a cot/toddler bed than adult size linen?"

A toddler duvet fits in the washing machine more easily than a single duvet. I would have to take a single duvet to the launderette as we only have a small washing machine.

However if you have a large washing machine then this isn't an issue. Toddler bed duvet/ linen take up (marginally!) less space.

suedpantsoffem · 24/08/2012 14:40

you must have a really tiny washing machine then ReallTired??? I can put a duvet cover, sheet, pillow case and lots of clothes in mine all at the same time - and it's not an extra big one - just an off the shelf washing machine.

shaky · 24/08/2012 14:41

We put ds in a toddler bed at 2 yr old and put the cot mattress next to the bed in case he fell out.
He falls asleep on the floor regularly.
Bought the bed, mattress and linen as a full set from kiddicare.

moistoncemore · 24/08/2012 14:41

I think Really is talking about washing the duvet when it gets wee-soaked.

I struggle to fit a normal single size duvet in the washing machine. DS has a toddler duvet which is easy to wash with the rest of the bed linen.
