Calling all mums of DDs

Don't quite know how to word this BUT....

I have 2 DSs, they have willys.

What does my DD have? The words I use aren't really suitable for kids and the general phrase at my mums and toddlers group is 'mini' which just seems odd. DD is 6 weeks old, and DSs are starting to be curious when I change her nappy as to what she has if she doesn't have the same as them.

Incidently, me and my sister had a brainstorming session and came up with 'twinkle' but when DH just heard me use it (I was changing her whilst on the phone to him) his immediate response was to tell me to ask you lot!! I think he's finally got the idea about Mumsnet

Thanks for the replies, I'm glad I'm not the only one who was a bit stuck on this.

Ds2 has asked me why DD has two bums(!) so maybe I'll just have to agree that she has a front one and a back one.

I have to agree I have problems with 'fanny', it does seem a bit rude, but then isn't that the real problem, ALL the words for womens bits seem a bit coarse....whereas most of the male ones are fine!

DD calls hers a Mary Ellen - have no idea why

HappyHollyHulababy · 18/12/2003 12:31

We have this one coming up too with 20mo DD. Still not sure what to use. I don't really like the term "fanny" at all - was considered rude and impolite in my family (and Dh's). I think we just said "front bottom" at home or "bits", "private parts", etc. I'll be reading with interest!

From what I know calling it a 'fanny' is just an extension of calling it a girls name, fanny is actually a realy name. In the US thats what they call a bottom.

"I refer to your names page, and you ask about the european origins of fanny, as far as I am aware Fanny Adams was a well known late 18th century prostitute, all her clients were respected members of society, who if they wished to talk about her in company would just refer to her as fanny, of course people who were not in the know understood that it involved something to do with sex, and presumed that it just refered to the vagina, not a real person. Of course with the trade of Miss Adams, and her initials the phrase sweet FA came into being, implying that she was good at her job."

So infact you aren't coarse using that word...you are a respectable member of society who uses prostitutes thank you very much

handlemecarefully · 18/12/2003 12:36

I call it a fanny too. I didn't realise that its associated with a rude word by some folk....

Neetsmassi · 18/12/2003 12:36

We call it a winkie

MistletoeandWine · 18/12/2003 12:36

ROFL

santafio2 · 18/12/2003 12:37

we call it a spadgel!

Debl · 18/12/2003 12:45

Noonie or tuppie........

ninja · 18/12/2003 12:54

I called it a wee wee when I was small (well I'm still small but YKWIM!) I thouhgt that was quite a normal term for it - looks loike I'll have to rethink!

Tortington · 18/12/2003 23:40

i think you can run into trouble later by using baby names - if you can - i suggest using an open approach as poss - tart as you mean to go on. we call it a vagina and the boys have a penis. its so open there are no giggles when its used - its just a word like ninkynonkynoonoo

normerryxmas · 18/12/2003 23:49

Custardo, I totally agree with you, so why do I call my son's penis a willy? You've got me thinking now!

angelanais · 18/12/2003 23:56

Have to say I agree with Custardo too

luchar · 19/12/2003 09:29

Have to agree too - had a long chat with my sister about this a few years ago and we agreed on penis or willy (use both) and 'gina or vagina. It is a difficult topic but we don't think up other names for hand or foot or finger do we so why for our penises and vaginas? It's just part of our body after all!!

EventideEnid · 19/12/2003 10:14

We have a 'minnie' I'm afraid.

Katherine · 19/12/2003 10:19

I agree in part but I still think hearing small children talking about a penis or vagina would shock a lot of people (in a similar way to fanny) and probably start a lot of giggles amongst their peers, which in turn would prompt overuse of the word and a bit of a problem. I think kids automatically switch to using the more grown up versions when their peers do which is usally when they are aware that its a topic not to shout about anyway

HappyHollyHulababy · 19/12/2003 10:25

My mum did used to refer to it as "tuppence" or "tuppy" too.

janinlondon · 19/12/2003 10:27

We call it a "fantoosh". No doctor or teacher has yet had trouble understanding it, and it doesn't sound rude. Twinkle was a problem because all the kids at nursery who call it that find twinkle twinkle little star hysterical. I think technical terms are fine but if you have to teach them, you have to get them right - I think vagina technically only refers to the internal bit. There are whole sets of other terms for each part. Women are so complicated!

EventideEnid · 19/12/2003 10:28

Even I don't use the word vagina, I personally think it is hideous. Like tuppence though, its sweet!

Lilismum · 19/12/2003 10:30

We call it toot or tootie....dialect thing

wilbur · 19/12/2003 10:35

We've gone for "bits and pieces" although I use fanny too - but like others would probably prefer dd not to use this in conversation with her granny. On a related note, had a hilarious conversation with ds last week. It had been very windy here and some things in our street had blown away, so ds and I had been talking about that. Later on we had a conversation about how daddy and ds have willies, mummy and dd don't have willies. The next morning he comes into the bedroom and tells dh that mummy and dd don't have willies because they have blown away. Dh now using this as an excuse to hold onto his bits while watching tv in case they blow away.

WedgiesMum · 19/12/2003 11:02

Tried to add this yesterday but failed....

We call it a fairy. This is a long standing reference term in our family and all of the girls use it, as do the boys, we've found that it doesn't seem to cause any embarrasement either!

jinglesaur · 19/12/2003 12:00

This is very useful. I've been worrying about this for ages...

mothernature · 19/12/2003 12:00

We call 'it' hape-ney as in 'Halfpenny' it was a song beleive it or not where I come from a long time ago, a mother telling her daughter 'keep yer hand on yer hape-ney, cover it well with yer palm, keep yer hand on yer hape-ney and molly will come to no harm.' Very wise words me think's..... slopes off before anyone realises she from up north.....

RoscoeReindeer · 19/12/2003 12:10

I don't want to be crude but round here 'halfpenny' and 'tuppence' are rhyming slang for breasts - ie 'halfpenny bits'.
