Starting uni full time in September, having a wobble!

Reassure me being a student mum can be done!

I have 2 DSs, 4 and 20 months. DH works locally and my timetable is not too hefty so only 20 hours of childminding a week and we can manage drop offs and pick ups between us. We have family willing to help too.

I'm starting a psychology degree. I've spent the last 4 years off and on doing OU psychology and am using those courses as my entrance qualifications.

I know the workload will be hefty, but for 1st and probably part of 2nd year, I will be covering stuff I've already done with the OU.

I have been at home with the boys for almost 2 years now after taking redundancy after mat leave. Doing it now feels like a great opportunity to get a qualification and change career (or go back to my old field, but better qualified). And I'll be off during the school holidays with them so it seems like that's a benefit too.

My mum is a bit catsbumface about me 'leaving' my DC to study. But surely it's an investment in my future, and their future? Or am I being self-indulgent? I just want to get cracking with my degree, use my brain properly to fully learn a subject I love, and get out of the house and feel like an individual person again. DH is totally supportive of me doing this but other people's mixed reactions and negativity is getting me down.

Please tell me you have successfully juggled kids and study :)

Good luck to anyone starting tomorrow! You'll be fine.

I don't go back until 24th, but the loan goes in tomorrow. Happy days. Grin

I've applied for my NUS card, so tomorrow afternoon or tuesday I need to get my student railcard sorted. As a mature student you can only apply at the booking office!

Am now starting to quietly panic.

cheesesarnie · 16/09/2012 19:48

Oscar- we've had awful trouble trying to work out blardy rail cards! going to ask at the train station on the way home tomorrow!

thanks missmogwi!

absolutely shitting myself now!

I am feeling very nervous about tomorrow, have been really touched by the positive responses I have had from people I have told I am going to uni. I thought there was a concensus in society now that a degree is not worth much but I have been pleased by how many people think it will help my chances of finding work at the end of 3 years (which is my reason for doing it as I have been unable to find a job!)

Goodluck to everyone starting tomorrow, we will meet back here tomorrow evening to swap first day stories!

OscarPistoriusGirlfriend · 16/09/2012 19:58

We will. Hopes I will not be a nervous wreck!

CatPower · 16/09/2012 20:02

First lecture tomorrow at ten - eek! Good luck everyone, we can do this!

Peggotty · 16/09/2012 21:24

Good luck everyone. I'm in tomorrow for first day of induction week. Very nervous and bad tempered with my dh and dc Blush. Just wish first day was over with as I know I'll feel better!

FoxPass · 16/09/2012 22:10

Good luck everyone starting tomorrow, have a great day :)

That went well. Had a head on on the school run so we spent the morning in hospital instead.

Tempernillo · 17/09/2012 13:00

Oh God Oscar! Hope you are all ok?! Sad

OscarPistoriusGirlfriend · 17/09/2012 13:07

Thankfully DS1 is fine. DS2 was with my mum so not with us! I'm sore all over and my poor spd buggered hips are agony.

Oh well, tomorrow's another day.

MissMogwi · 17/09/2012 13:35

How horrible for you all! Hope you are having some peace and quiet this afternoon and you feel better soon.

OscarPistoriusGirlfriend · 17/09/2012 14:04

Kept him off because he'd missed lunch by the time we were discharged so we're curled up watching Harry Potter. (and Oscar Pistorius videos.) Grin

Re. student railcards - you have two choices...

a) get a copy of the application form and get it stamped signed at your university before you go to the ticket office clutching your photo!

or

b) with the International NUS card (an extra £2) you don't need the university stamping/signature performance.

katedan · 17/09/2012 17:56

Oh NO Oscar, hope you are both ok tomorrow-what a bum start!
first day went OK - about 90% are mature students and very friendly. Verynervous how I willjuggle course with kids asthey have already given us a timetable change for this THursday whichmenas begging a schoolpick up from someone and changethe day we meet the childminderfor the third time! I hope she is patient with me!!!

OscarPistoriusGirlfriend · 17/09/2012 18:23

Well when I get in my international NUS card should be ready so that's my
Railcard issue solved.
Hmm

CatPower · 17/09/2012 19:18

Oh Oscar, you poor thing! Glad you're all okay though. X

FoxPass · 17/09/2012 21:28

Glad you're both OK oscar, scary! Shock

Glad you had a good day, Katedan. I feel the same way, today is a local holiday so today's lectures have been rearranged for Friday instead, so I had to scramble to get childcare for Friday afternoon. As long as I get enough notice it should be fine but it's an added worry!

Tomorrow is the proper start of term after induction and freshers last week, looking forward to it but slightly nervous too!

OK just completed my second day and I am having a major wobble,Iknew social work would be hard but I think I have underestimated! It is going to be so hard to juggle 3 dyas at uni (which rises to 4 days in January) with my own studies and getiing the kids homework and their actvties.

Does anyone know how easy it is to drop out during the course and what happens to your student loans (do you have to pay back the whole year?) I assume you have to pay part of the loan if you quit after you enrol soI am thinking about quiting before enromment on Friday!!!!

I hate to be a quitter but I really beleive me doing this course will have a negative effect on the kids homework and their lives!!! They are so used to having me a home to help them!!!!

OscarPistoriusGirlfriend · 18/09/2012 21:24

Ok going to aim for starting - the redux tomorrow.

Hopefully car accidents, gunmen or anything else. (poor officers were murdered near where I live. Sad )

OscarPistoriusGirlfriend · 18/09/2012 21:25

Katedan give it a go and see what happens x

PlaySchool · 18/09/2012 21:51

I'd forgotten about a Student Rail Card! :)

MissMogwi · 18/09/2012 22:03

Kate- wobbles are very common. The sheer volume of work can be very daunting. I have had second thoughts a couple of times, trying to juggle the work load, kids etc. but as I go into my final year I'm so glad I've stuck it out.

Give it some thought, maybe speak to your tutor?

I hope I don't sound patronising as its certainly not meant that way!

Peggotty · 18/09/2012 22:06

Kate, perfectly normal and natural to be feeling overwhelmed at this stage - it at least shows you're realistic! I'm feeling similar - was day 2 for me and I've already enrolled! I'm going to take it a day at a time and see how it goes. I don't know about paying back loans etc if you drop out. Give it a bit of a chance. Have you managed to talk to any other mature students with dc about how they're feeling?

Itwillendinsmiles · 19/09/2012 06:50

Katedan Not sure what happens if you quit before enrolment but we're told early each year what the key date is to drop out before if you don't want to be liable for the entire years fees. Last year I think it was the 31st October.

How old are your children? I deliberately waited until mine were older before returning to study; however I found that seeing me study and juggle stuff made the children extra helpful and their contribution to housework, cooking etc. really helped me... and we used to study together which helped us all.

It is hard though and you have to make the correct decision for you and your family.
