iPod Touch-present for 6yr old

My dd is 6 next week and all she wants for her birthday is an iPod touch. I think it is too much but dh says it is all she wants, she isn't spoilt and she is so so good. Does this not deserve one Is his arg. I can sort of see where he is coming from and she will be upset if she does not get it. What do you think?

It can be used for all sorts of fun educational apps which have certainly made our pair of 4 yr olds take a lot of interest in the natural world, different countries, spelling and simple maths. We bought a second iPad so that they could have one each to use and we spent a while discussing this as again, we didn't want to spoil them. We've also installed an egg timer app so they know how much longer they can use them before we want to reclaim them.

crazynanna · 29/06/2012 20:57

What about one of the cheaper models? Thing is...if you go straight for the top model now, what do you get her when she is 12/13/14?

My dd is just turning 14, and was going to get a kindle, but now wants an Ipos touch. It is a bit more expensive, and she has an Ipod...it's a war between us atm.

Glittertwins · 29/06/2012 20:58

If you do get one, make sure you lock down Internet access, app store, in app purchases. Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs.

it's a lot of money. i just wouldn't want to set the precedent of spending so much

if it is affordable, would you consider getting an i-pad or other tablet for the whole family, and get her another more age- and price-appropriate gift.

IslaValargeone · 29/06/2012 21:02

Honestly? I don't think it's age appropriate and it's a very expensive gift for a 6 year old.

Lolaismyfavouriteandmybest · 29/06/2012 21:03

I bought dd (5) one for Xmas. It was an old model and was relatively cheap in eBay.

I've stuck language games spelling stuff, phonics and maths puzzles on there (although she does favour the Disney games)

The problem was (unbeknown to me at the time as I don't do school run) she told all the kids/parents at school that I'd bought her an iPhone. At 5. I can imagine how I was judged..... Blush

StateofConfusion · 29/06/2012 21:07

My 5yo will be getting one in 2wks for his birthday.

We travel a lot, and he likes music in his room to go to sleep to (has since birth) its covering the space of a lot of other purchases eg in car dvd players, new cd player for bedroom, the kiddizoom camera he loves at a friends etc. He's used mine sensibly and carefully since he was two.

Yes its expensive but he knows he doesn't just get stuff and won't be expecting a 3d tv next year as a result before someone cries what will he expect next.

nancy75 · 29/06/2012 21:10

How much is it? I think if it's a similar price I would get the iPad instead, it does more and has a bigger screen for watching films or whatever

Glittertwins · 29/06/2012 21:18

A top level iPod touch (64gig) a lot less money than the same iPad. What does the iPod touch do? I have no idea!

PavlovtheCat · 29/06/2012 21:22

no way. DD uses DHs broken touch, and my nano (I 'share' it with her so she can have some tunes in her room, well she will on her 6th birthday this week). I would not buy her a touch of her own. We considered by her a shuffle for tunes, but she will lose it.

what does she want to use it for/what would you let her use it for? ask yourself that, and then think about whether than can be done in a more age appropriate way.

hillyhilly · 29/06/2012 21:23

I think its fine, lots of educational stuff on it, the games are so cheap and if she really wants it and understands that it will be her only present (more or less) then go ahead.

PavlovtheCat · 29/06/2012 21:25

oh but it wont be her only present though will it hilly honestly can you imagine the face of a 6yr who gets one present. at 6, they do not understand that, at 10, they would understand they can choose to have that one present and nothing else. a 6yr old would be devestated if she got one preesnt. well, my DD would, even if cost hundred of pounds, she has no clue of the value of money yet (although learning fast!).

notactuallyme · 29/06/2012 21:27

She's 6! Do u really want to hook her up to more screen time? Nooo, loads of time for that when she's a teen.

nancy75 · 29/06/2012 21:29

I still don't know how much they are, but if you can afford it I don't see a problem. Dd uses her iPad for lots of educational games, apple stuff is very easy for kids to use and fairly tough. As long as your dd knows she has to look after it then I think it's fine

cheesesarnie · 29/06/2012 21:30

Get her a dolly!!!

Primrose123 · 29/06/2012 21:31

It's quite an expensive present for a six year old. How about a second hand one? Then it's not such a problem if it gets broken or lost.

Glittertwins · 29/06/2012 21:44

Being able to use a computer is not necessarily a bad thing for a 6 yr old to learn to do if it's just one part of her activities. All day would be different, everything in moderation.

mummynumnum · 29/06/2012 21:46

It is 140. 2nd hand cheaper! She is actually good and understands that will be only Pres from us and going camping on bday rather than expensive party. She wants to play her music and games on it. Bought cheap pink stereo last yr and broke within months. Hmm! What to do??

I saw a 6 year old pupil take TWO IPHONES out of his bag today. Shocker.

I think it's too much for a 6 year old. I liked the suggestion about buying one for the whole family.

yellowraincoat · 29/06/2012 21:49

Hmm. Is she generally careful with her things? An ipod has a glass screen so it is easily broken if dropped even from a short height.

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 29/06/2012 21:51

If you can afford it yes I would

nancy75 · 29/06/2012 21:51

Ok well for £140 I would get it (I take it that's for the new one). Apple have good aftercare and I think buying secondhand could be a false economy. I know it's a lot for one item, but you can easily spend £100 on a couple of dolls and a few other bits of plastic tat that gets played with for 5 minutes, at least this is something she will have for quite a while

herecomesthsun · 29/06/2012 21:59

John Lewis had one for £109 in sale (not 64mb though)

mummynumnum · 29/06/2012 22:05

Ooh I like the John Lewis Price. I have got some nectar points I could use from sainburys as well.

MrsJohnMurphy · 29/06/2012 22:09

I don't have anything against getting her one, but I would get a good expensive all singing all dancing everything proof case. Ipod touches are very very delicate, especially the screens. My Sister and I both got our 7yo's ipod touches and both screens are now broken. Dd didn't drop hers far and thankfully it still works.

Dp and I have had iphone 4's and dropped them/bashed them numerous times and they are fine.
