dd1 is in reception, and we have therefore entered the minefield that is after school playdates. there always seems to be a raised eyebrow from the other parents, when i (politely ask them to collect at 6ish, to give dd1 time to wind down before bed.

All the invited children seem a little bored/tired/fraught after 2 hours in any case, so surely that's a natural end point? Or am i just terrible at playdates?

I usually say btw 6.30 and 7

No winding down just straight to bed

Seona1973 · 18/06/2012 19:16

my ds (5) is still outside playing just now as it is still nice/dry (he is with his sister who is 8). His bedtime is 8pm during the week

You are not alone! My 3 are always in bed by 7pm, and then I often go out for a jog/walk and am amazed how many of their classmates are still playing out. Having said that, mine wake early so that's the payoff! I guess every family has bedtimes etc that suit their lifestyle.

AThingInYourLife · 18/06/2012 19:17

My 4yo goes to bed at 8pm.

shrimponastick · 18/06/2012 19:17

I have a teen now, but his bedtime was very strict.

From being a small baby - until the age of 9 or 10 it was 7.00pm.

Kids need a lot of sleep (so do I!)

pinkhebe · 18/06/2012 19:17

My ds is 9. All friends have left by 6-6.30

balia · 18/06/2012 19:18

7pm for my DS (5) with a considerable wind down of bath-story-bed. But then he has always been an awful sleeper (was prem) and so this is what works for us.

EyeoftheStorm · 18/06/2012 19:19

School play dates always finish at 6 around here. My 6 year old goes to bed at 7 and is asleep as soon as her head hits the pillow.

Sidge · 18/06/2012 19:20

Nope, my YR and Y3 children are in the bath at about 1845, then in bed about 1900 and can read in bed until "lights out" at about 1930.

If we did after school playdates (we don't) then they'd be finished by six. That's late enough on a school night for little ones I think, it's a long day if they've been out since 0830.

It's bad enough on the days I work until 1800 as we're not home until 1830 and then they're not in bed until nearly 2000, shattered and grumpy.

FootballFriendSays · 18/06/2012 19:21

Regardless of bedtime, play date pickup has always been 5.30-6.

Greeata · 18/06/2012 19:22

Regardless of bedtime, I always makes sure playdates end by 6, 6:30 by the latest. Shudders at the thought of 3 hour long after school playdates.

NoVegBeforeHerMej · 18/06/2012 19:22

7pm here- although DS (5) is still farting around up there now...

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 18/06/2012 19:23

DD's age 9 and nearly 7, are both in bed for 7 and read until 7.30.

Weekends are about 8'ish.

justwanderingalong · 18/06/2012 19:23

My 3 DC aged 3, 5 and 7 all go to bed between 7 - 7.30pm. I've tried letting DD1 (7) go to bed later but she herself asks to go by 7.30 at latest although I do sometimes feel it's early as kids her age or less are still outside playing but it's what works best for us just now.

InelegantlyWasted · 18/06/2012 19:25

I an one of those awful mothers who doesn't really have a set bed-time for my DS. Blush
He is 4 and some nights he is in bed by 7.30pm. On other occasions he has gone to bed as late as 10pm.
Over the coming weeks and months in the build up to starting Reception I really want to try and get him settled into a proper bedtime in the early evening.
When we start the whole having friends round for tea malarkey I will be respectful of other parents rules and bring their kids back/pick my son up whenever suits them.

Littleplasticpeople · 18/06/2012 19:28

No you aren't alone! My ds is also in reception, he is always in bed by 7 ( usually by 6.45) having a story. He is rarely awake longer than 5 mins after we finish the story! As someone else said, the payoff is that he is always up by 6 am. However, if he says up later, he still gets up at 6, so for now I'll enjoy peaceful evenings < ignores 3 yr old dd currently singing in bed and quite obviously not following the plan>

Molehillmountain · 18/06/2012 19:29

Mine do go to bed at seven but tbh even if they didn't five thirty six ish is plenty late enough for visiting children to go home.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 18/06/2012 19:33

7.30 here.
9 yr old at 8 after I attended a sleep seminar and they showed how much sleep children needed. I relaxed a bit and gave him a bit longer.
The little ones are sparko within minutes but ds2 doesn't fall asleep for hours :(
It's a real worry.

JustFabulous · 18/06/2012 19:34

My 7 year old goes to bed at 7pm.

wantingmore · 18/06/2012 19:35

my dd2 (5) goes to bed at 6.30-7pm. if we have playdates they always finish by 6pm. dd1 now 11 went to bed at 7pm unill she was 9ish.

molly3478 · 18/06/2012 19:35

my dd is 4 and is in bed asleep every night by 6pm.

BillComptonstrousers · 18/06/2012 19:36

What time do the children who go to bed at 7pm get up? My YR2 DD goes to bed at 9pm and gets up at 8am, surely 11 hours sleep is ok? She had a playmate a few weeks ago and the mum wanted the child back for 5.30 to go to bed at 6pm, I wasn't planning on serving tea till 6pm [embarrassed]

ThePathanKhansWitch · 18/06/2012 19:37

My 4 yo is in bed by 7, and sparko 5 minutes later. She's miserable if she's ever up later.

molly3478 · 18/06/2012 19:38

dd goes asleep 6 til half 6/half 7 depends
