dd1 is in reception, and we have therefore entered the minefield that is after school playdates. there always seems to be a raised eyebrow from the other parents, when i (politely ask them to collect at 6ish, to give dd1 time to wind down before bed.

All the invited children seem a little bored/tired/fraught after 2 hours in any case, so surely that's a natural end point? Or am i just terrible at playdates?

DDs (10 and 5) both go to bed between 8 and half past. DD1 has to be in from playing out with friends by 7 so she can wind down and we can actually see her before bed. It seems I'm in a minority round here with this rule but I am very strict with it in the week!

noddyholder · 18/06/2012 19:38

I could never get my ds in bed when the evenings were light! He is 18 now and I can't get him out of bed

SizzleSazz · 18/06/2012 19:39

DD1 5.7 goes to bed at 7pm. usually pick up from friends about 5.45pm so home for 6 and an hour before bed.

She gets up about 7.15

bill, dd1 is normally up between 7 and 7.30. she can't get up later than 7.30 as otherwise we're late for nursery/work/school (admittedly, we are an utter shower of shite in the mornings).

DS 5 in bed for 7 and asleep at 7.30 and he is Y1. I did have a play date that picked up at 6.45pm, that was a bit of s long afternoon, would have preferred puck up at 6 unless Friday night.

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 18/06/2012 19:43

My 4 yo goes between 6 and 6.30 and my 7yo between 7 and 7.30. Any later and they just can't cope.

wasabipeanut · 18/06/2012 19:43

My DS will be 5 in Sept and still has a 7pm bedtime or thereabouts. The thought of having other children here until 6.30 is quite scary to me. 5.30 sounds reasonable with tea at 5ish.

I am quite rigid in my routines but DS wakes so early regardless of what time he goes to bed. On special occasions when we've let him stay up late he's battered the next day.

NoVegBeforeHerMej · 18/06/2012 19:44

DS wakes up at 6.15.
Only because 13yr old DD starts stomping getting ready around then. Reckon he'd go til 7 otherwise.

lynniep · 18/06/2012 19:44

We dont have playdates after school. We dont actually have them at all actually. No-ones ever asked, and we don't ever ask anyone else! I do look after another 5 year old one day after week until about 5-530 and I can safely say that he and my own 5 yo have had enough of each other by then. They are too tired to play 'nicely' any more. Both mine (2 & 5 ) start bath->bedtime at 6.45 and are (usually) asleep by 7.30pm. Both get up around 6.30am (I think the 5 yo would wake later but his brother yelling forces an earlier rise)

mahonga · 18/06/2012 19:44

4.5 year old goes to bed at 7 pm, up by 6 am, so the same 11 hours as yours BillCompton just bought forward. I guess it depends on whether you like having time to yourself in the evening, or a lie in!

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 18/06/2012 19:44

And I can thoroughly recommend getting a blackout blind for all the summer sleep refusers. My 2 are excellent at saying 'but it's not dark yet'. Problem solved.

Just5minspeace · 18/06/2012 19:44

All DC, 7,5,2 go to bed at the same time, as close to 6.30pm as work allows. I need them up early so it works for us, they need their sleep and we need our evenings.
You are not alone!
Oh and NO playdates Monday-Thursday.

My 2 (5yo and 2yo) are in bed around 7 - 7.15, and usually asleep shortly after. They get up at 7 weekdays 7.30 weekends.

We've never had a playdate after school - DS1 has plenty of friends but it's just been that there have been no playdates. Which is fine with me! If we did have someone roung I would certainly expect them collected by 6.

billsmill · 18/06/2012 19:59

Nope, you're not the only mother. My two are in bed at 7pm, hopefully asleep by 8pm. I need my evenings!

HandMadeTail · 18/06/2012 20:04

DS (8) is in bed. Official bedtime is 7:30, but it can be 8:00.

DD2 (11) goes up at 8:00 and DD1 (13) goes up at 9:00.

All a bit later on Fridays and Saturdays. We only do play dates on Fridays and weekends (although DD1 may go to a friend after school, but she makes her own arrangements) so we can be more relaxed with the time.

Certainly at 5, they were all in bed at 7:00.

TrinityIsAFuckingRhino · 18/06/2012 20:07

my 5 and 7 year old go to bed at 7

although they are still both up now but thats for cake and happy time after visiting their dads grave

BadRoly · 18/06/2012 20:08

No not at all - our school night bedtimes are:
Dd1 (10) - 8
Ds1 (9) - 7.30
Dd2 (5) - 7
Ds2 (3) - 6.30
Unless we have Rainbows/brownies/Guides/Beavers/Cubs - then it is all as early as I can manage but still all in bed by 8. I need some time to watch my telly programmes and so on Blush

Sabriel · 18/06/2012 20:15

My 5 yo Reception DD officially goes to bed at 7pm if DH can be bothered to take her

We don't do playdates but 6pm seems very late to be picking up. Although Rainbows doesn't finish until 6.30 Hmm

We have a swimming lesson on a Sunday that finishes at 6pm and all the other kids get dressed into their PJs afterwards, so an early bedtime is clearly 'normal'.

TheEnglishWomanInTheAttic · 18/06/2012 20:16

My 6 and 4 year olds go up between 7 and 7.30, to be asleep for 8.

Usually.

But in the holidays it slips a bit, and on hot summer evenings I give them some grace to play out longer too; it was 32 degrees here today and is still hot now, so I let them stay out til 7.45. The 4 year old fell asleep during his story though.

My kids are, and always have been, naturally early risers (5am early) regardless of the time they go to bed, and these days the eldest has to be up at 6.15am to get ready and have breakfast in time to catch the school bus at 7am, so going to bed much later than 7.30pm isn't really a great idea on a school night.

BillComptonstrousers · 18/06/2012 20:17

I think I prefer the lie in! Both of them are up in their rooms at 8pm and reading or writing, so they are pretty quiet, so not too bothered if they are asleep or not. Weekends are a bit of a free for all, not too bothered when they go to bed as they will lie in till 10 am if we are not doing anything. I suppose they are not toddlers anymore either, so there is not the relentless chatter and needing to be entertained and the 'Oh my god to to bed so I can have some peace ' Grin

missorinoco · 18/06/2012 20:21

Last but one, excluding the above posters. I have generously extended it to 8 pm at weekends, although I capitalise on his inability to tell the time and don't always give him this long. Mine are alse early risers, regardless of when theu go to bed. Not 5 am early though, TEWITA, you are making me feel spoiled!

StealthPolarBear · 18/06/2012 20:23

DS is usually asleep by about 8.30, gets up at 6.

Wallace · 18/06/2012 20:28

5 year old goes to bed at 7 (ish)

But playdates finish at 5 - before supper Grin

AuntLucyInPeru · 18/06/2012 20:30

Playdates are out of the house by 5.30 here. I am seriously done with other people's children after 2 hours, never mind what DS needs!
