Think this has been done many times before so if anyone could point me to an old thread or a website I'd be grateful...

DD has just hit (I think) the age where she can start to appreciate actual activities - she's 16mo and will now 'draw', or will sit in a chair and concentrate on a book for a while. I'd like to do some actual activities with her, but havent got much of a clue where to start. Can anyone offer any ideas? I can cope with a bit of mess as long as she's enjoying herself.

Thanks all

DS is my only (also 16mo) and I don't really know any others so these are a but home-made but what we do is:

I put warm water and washing up liquid in a washing up bowl on the kitchen floor and he washes up all his toys, then dries them

We water the garden

Fill a bowl with shaving foam and strip DS to nappy then get dirty!

Fill washing up bowl wih rice and bury cars in it for him to find

Finger painting, and colouring ( we have the crayons first pens which are great)

We have just got a sandpit and paddling pool so spend a lot of time throwing balls and toys into the pool etc

Have a go at playdoh - but DS is a bit baffled by this

Hopefully more creative people will be along soon- marking my place for their answers!

That's crayola first pens not crayons!

My DD is 15 months. Today I was making quiche and she loved helping roll the pastry. SHe also loves helping me bake and then wash up!
We've got a sand table and paddling pool which provides hours of entertainment. Crayolas first crayons are fab and I wouldn't be without the aquadoodle.

I'm also marking my place!

Face I bake a lot and would like to get DS involved but can't work out how to do it- do you do it on a low table or have a still or something? I can't imagine DS managing to stay on a stool!

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 02/06/2012 14:14

OMG the Aquadoodle thing looks amazing - got to get me one of those!!

Glue, glitter, glue and more glitter. You can get glitter in little shaker pots from wilkinsons. My DS loved it at that age.

Also stickers, you'll have to peel them off and hand them to your DC but then they can stick away to their hearts content.

Play doh, but be warned its messy, don't attempt anywhere near a carpet.

Washing up bowl with water and some washable toys (my DS likes to wash his matchbox cars).

Oh and giant chalks for drawing on your garden patio, drive.

BTW in my experience aquadoodle doesn't live up to expectations, my DS wasn't impressed anyway.

bigkidsdidit · 02/06/2012 14:20

I've just bought one too Grin

Good old amazon app

I have a Phil and Teds seat that clips on to the kitchen table. Will find out what its called. We also got given a child sized table and chairs where she sits and colours etc.

With the baking, just the silicon cupcake cases provide entertain, she spends ages putting them in and then taking them out of the tray!

FaceCrack · 02/06/2012 14:38

metoo

bigkidsdidit · 02/06/2012 14:52

Thanks!

I have a little table. I am ashamed to admit it has never occurred to me to drag it into the kitchen Blush

I double the sticker recommendation and also the watering the garden one. DS loves those.

I also do a lot of cooking with DS - he holds the measuring cup and I put the flour/water/sugar etc in, and he gets to tip it in the bowl and do lots of mixing. Banana bread is favourite so far - squishing bananas is apparently quite satisfactory.

I haven't tried the washing toys one, I think it'll be popular.
