Just wondered if anyone had heard anything weird or funny from other mums.

Heard the following:

Mum 1: Don't bother sterilising bottles just rinse them in hot water

Mum 2: Give dbaby calpol before their injections so they don't feel the pain

Mum 3: My ds is so big, it would be unfair to breastfeed him (bw 8 lb 10 oz)

Mum 4: gp is crap, takes dd straight to a &e to see a paed whatever the issue

um, the not-sterilising lobby has quite a big medical and scientific backing.
Not delving further here, just letting you know she's not actually wrong.

Twiglett · 19/02/2006 17:44

Mum 1 is kind of right .. they need washing in hot water .. preferably in the dishwasher

Mum 2 .. also has a point .. calpol 30 mins before baby jabs does dull the pain and is also in their system to work against any potential fever

Mum 3 is talking crap

Mum 4 may well have a point .. we know a number of fairly crap GPs and when we find a good one we cling on for dear life

londonmummy · 19/02/2006 17:45

really? thought you needed to sterilise everything for a year, esp bottles not due to everyday germs, but due to bacteria from leftover milk

funniest things I have ever heard are when a mum kept a poo diary .. oh yes she wrote it down .. every movement with a description .. just in case there were any changes .. baby was perfectly healthy btw

also find mothers who follow Gina Ford routines slavishly fairly amusing

Kidstrack2 · 19/02/2006 17:47

i once heard a mum at toddler group say, "i'm off into town to get darius a new cot he doesn't like his new moses basket" when since does a 3day old baby tell you he doesn't like his moses basket

intergalacticwalrus · 19/02/2006 17:48

We stopped sterilising after 4 months, partly because DS developed a habit for licking the cat and the kitchen floor. I think bottles need to be washed in v hot soapy water, rinsed with hot water and left to air dry, as dishwashers don't remove all food particles. That's what I was told anyway. (it was by my Mum, who is a clinical specailist in infection control)

Twiglett · 19/02/2006 17:48

nope Londonmummy .. a dishwasher cycle is sufficient for milk bottles .. nothing else needs sterilising at all ..

they don't sterilise at all in the US nor on paediatric wards

intergalacticwalrus · 19/02/2006 17:50

In fact, I find baby groups rather amusing in themselves. I did go to a few, until I realised that I wasn't really the sort of person so sit around talking about every minutiae of my birth experience and leaky boob problems.

dinny · 19/02/2006 18:01

Londonmummy....

  1. True, dishwasher is OK.
  2. Agree, have done this and it's usually advised at surgeries.
  3. Crap
  4. Agree...to an extent.

So only Mum 3 is really talking rubbish.

WestCountryLass · 19/02/2006 22:17

Sterilised everything with my DS until he was 8 months and stopped when someone said that they had and that there kids were putting unsterilised things in their mouths (as was my son). Felt a bit foolish as is common sense really

Lots of people do give their babies Calpol before the jabs. I didn't as injections are only painful for a few seconds but I did give it at the first sign of any pain/fever. My DS seemed to have these reactions, DD did not so did not have it.

Uhm, as for the BFing, well some people do not want to do it and whilst that is their perrogative, they will use any excuse rather than saying "it is not for me/baby".

And GPs, well my last clinic was piss poor and I had to take DS to A & E to get antibiotics for a chest infection. My new clinic is fab and I would always go tere first.

Skribble · 19/02/2006 22:24

"Oh a boy and a girl- A gentlemans family." WTF

"My goodness 11lb 7oz did you have him yourself?"
"No the woman in the next bed did it all for me."

"Are you feeding him yourself?"
"No I have a wet nurse"

Note the replies are my sarky answers not actually heard .

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 19/02/2006 22:27

I half agree with the no-sterilising thing but always had a feeling there could be a difference if you actually stored milk in the bottles for a while - I'd happily use dish-washer bottles straight away, or fill them with boiled water to add poweder in later, but never liked the idea of using them to store milk in. Does that have any logic?

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 19/02/2006 22:29

also don;t agree that putting unsterilsed toys in their mouth is the same as using unsterlised bottles for milk - taht argument really doesn't do it for me. A plastic toy doesn't have bacteria

Miaou · 19/02/2006 22:38

Overheard from a mum at baby massage group - babies were 12 weeks at the time: "washable nappies? No, my ds refused to wear them"

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

cece · 19/02/2006 22:42

ds had unsterilised bottles from about 6-7 months once I saw him eating the fluff out of the hoover...

Miaou · 19/02/2006 22:43

I've never sterilised anything for ds. He doesn't have bottles though - might have done if he had.

brimfull · 19/02/2006 22:47

I didn't sterilise at all so agree with mum 1

just used dishwasher and made up bottles as I needed them

the a&e one is a bit ott though

Pixiefish · 19/02/2006 22:51

I didn't sterilise as i'd have burnt my boobs- lol- not funny I know.

Seriously though, even when I tried using breastpumps etc I never sterilised- just hot water or dishwasher

mszebra · 20/02/2006 06:19
  1. i sterilised b4 & would again -- didnt see the point in taking the risk.
But I also pumped 4 milk bank & they drum sterilising & hygiene into you (even tho' they pasteurise the milk be4 giving it 2 premies).

  2. Agree 100%.

  3. ds2 was same weight at birth & did fine on mama milk!

  4. GP care has been good for my 3, but I know to take it w/ caveats.

welshmum · 20/02/2006 06:52

They don't sterilise in UCH neo natal unit - just hot wash, rinse and air dry. So we didn't either - for both of them.
GP best mate suggested Calpopl before the jabs.

londonmummy · 20/02/2006 10:04

OMG - didn't realise this would turn into a whole sterilising issue. Ok some people don't bother sterilising, I wouldn't risk not sterilising bottles (don't bother with toys tho) tho as know babies have immature digestive/immune systems. (microwaves I would classify as sterilising) Bfeed anyway so not an issue for me. Actually another funny thing I heard was a mum who always sterilised her bottles in milton, so her baby actually acquired a taste for it and refused any bottles that didn't smell of milton!!

Re the calpol, isn't it good to let babies feel a little bit of pain? They need to know a needle in the thigh is going to hurt a little bit, can't wrap them in cotton wool forever.

lol, twiglett, kidstrack2, scribble & mieaou

Elibean · 20/02/2006 10:13

3 & 4 ???!?!?? Though if I thought my gp was truly crap, I might do the same. Or at least aim for a different gp in the practice.

I sterilized bottles till 6 months, then stopped sterilizing - but occasionally put bottles through the dishwasher (which is all the Americans do, by the way - they don't sterilize) and changed teats regularly. The French stop sterilizing as soon as the baby starts solids - according to my sil - which is between 4-6 months.

And 2: I gave dd calpol after her jabs so it would kick in before the fevers did - the first time I waited, and wished I hadn't. I do know many who gave it first, as baby sometimes too upset to take it after - but never heard of it 'taking away the pain' of the jab itself!

geekgrrl · 20/02/2006 10:16

huh? 'Good to let babies feel a little bit of pain'? WTF?

hunkermunker · 20/02/2006 10:16

Are you kidding about letting babies feel pain?

hunkermunker · 20/02/2006 10:18

Agree with Twig re the rest of the answers (DS1 was 8lb 10oz and fed till 17 months so she was talking shite and justifying not bfeeding in what she thought was an acceptable way, but was really just arse).
