what age did your child stop using a buggy?

Just wondering what age we might be able to get rid of our double buggy in favour of a single for our younger one? I know everyone is different and it depends on how long the journey is, but a rough idea would be lovely!

Never used a buggy, but my 2 year old is still frequently carried in sling, and I imagine will be for quite a while longer.

Chunkamatic · 10/05/2012 20:34

I traded my P&T double when DS1 was 3 and DS2 1. I got a maclaren and a buggy board which worked well but only really needed the board for about 6 months, he is quite a good walker so it was only there for the return journey when he was just too tired. Depends on the child though, a friends DS still uses a buggy at 4yo.

Makinglists · 10/05/2012 20:37

3yrs and 1 mth - DS1 is a good walker so its use was very much diminished but I still found it useful for 'off' days until then. From 3 he seemed capable and willing to walk virtually anywhere.

my dd1 was 4ish i think. dd2 was a month short of her 3rd birthday but that was because i broke my wrist so was in plaster for 8 weeks and couldnt push the buggy. dd2 coped really well.

Houseworkprocrastinator · 10/05/2012 20:52

I had a buggy board for eldest at nearly 3 when baby came along, still use buggy for little one at 2 (when I want to be quick) mostly when it's cold and I don't want to look at every slug and leaf on the way home.

But i am not looking forward to getting rid of it because then I will have to carry my bags :( might get myself an old lady shopping trolly thing :)

DeepPurple · 10/05/2012 20:54

DD hasn't been in a buggy since she was 2. She's very good at walking everywhere.

ConstantCraving · 10/05/2012 20:54

DS 3 years. DD 2.5years.

Ramekin · 10/05/2012 20:56

Although I started phasing it out pretty much as soon as she started walking, DD1 probably had her last ride in the buggy a few weeks before her 3rd birthday.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 10/05/2012 20:57

DS1 went onto a buggy board at 2.5 when DS2 was born. he had already pretty much stopped using the buggy, except for longer walks.

notcitrus · 10/05/2012 21:15

Ds 3.6. Had weaned him off it a few months earlier but then I was heavily pregnant with SPD and couldn't get him to/from nursery if he wanted to stage a sit-down protest - it's 0.6 miles each way.
So ended up using it at least in the evenings until I gave birth, then spent 3 weeks weaning him off it again, another 3 weeks with the buggy hidden, then brought it out to use for dd at 6 weeks rather than the baby carrier, having added different toys and put the footmuff back, laid it flat, and he didn't realise he'd ever seen it before!

He'd been able to walk a mile for a while, but forcing him to do it in the direction of my choice when I needed him to was the tricky part - people who said just wait for him to get up went quiet when I said 'even after an hour?'

smellyfeet · 10/05/2012 21:20

3.6yo. Although I still have it and when I took her to Disney a few months back I took it out. She loves her buggy and would go in it now if she could (4yo now).

Meglet · 10/05/2012 21:22

DS was 4.6.

DD is 3.7 and still hops in it when we're busy or shopping.

I don't walk at toddler speed and can't wait around for children if I have to go to work.

Ozziegirly · 11/05/2012 04:55

DS is 20 months and I only use ours when we go to the pool now as it's a way of keeping him in one place while I change. Apart from that he just walks now (been walking since 1 though).

hazeyjane · 11/05/2012 06:03

dd1 and 2 about 4ish.

It just depends on your child, your needs, how far/often you walk, whether you drive etc - difficult to gauge by others experiences imo.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 11/05/2012 06:20

That's true. DS (20mo) is a good walker, but sometimes I just have to get somewhere faster than he will walk- i.e. it'll take me 30 mins to walk home from playgroup with him in the pushchair, but 1.5 hrs if he's walking, stopping to examine every leaf, twig and dog we encounter, plus it's 2 miles so it is quite a way for him at the end of a day.

I'm having DC2 in September- wondering if I can get away wtih a buggy board on the Maclaren, but suspect not.

surroundedbyblondes · 11/05/2012 06:20

DD1 is 3,7 and I still have the buggy board attatched to DD2's buggy though it's usually clipped up. Was v useful yesterday for dashing home from preschool in the pouring rain!
Two years between our two girls and in thd first six months a double was invaluable. Allowed us to get out easily otherwise I would have gone nuts! And it was a failsafe way of getting them to nap at the same time Smile

Springforward · 11/05/2012 06:27

Just turned 3. However, he was hardly in it from about 2.6. The last time we used it was on holiday, when he pretty much used it as a place to nap while we were out and about.

gazzalw · 11/05/2012 07:08

We used ours till D1 was about 4 1/2 and DD was probably about 4 but we are a carless family and the school run is 1 1/2 miles each way. So for sheer speed and convenience we probably carried on using the buggies till the wheels fell off. It could take an hour to do the walk home in the pm with DD walking slowly [grr]

PigeonPie · 11/05/2012 07:12

DS1 was just over 2 and DS2 was 2 1/2. I don't walk very fast though and swapped my fab Xplory for a Sholley shopping trolley, so apart from the fact they couldn't sit on it, our walking habits of them holding onto the handles when necessary didn't really change.

Unlurked · 11/05/2012 07:19

Dd1 stopped using the buggy a few months before she was 3, we don't have a car so she walks everywhere. DD2 is nearly 2 now and I think she'll be in the sling for some time yet. As much as she would like to walk everywhere she's tiny so takes ages on her little legs!

When I had dd2, dd1 was still using the buggy so dd2 went into the sling. I thought a buggy board would just get in the way tbh.

BlueberryPancake · 12/05/2012 18:24

3 but available until 4 for very long walks, or when we go on holiday.

lovechoc · 12/05/2012 18:28

DS1 was around 3.4 (basically when he started at nursery). Looking forward to getting rid of the buggy with DS2...

RedHotPokers · 12/05/2012 18:29

DD was 2.6y (when DS was born).
DS is 3.1, and we still have the pushchair but have only used it about once a month for the past 6 months. The last time we used it (for a good few hours clothes shopping) he spent ages shouting 'help, somebody let me out of here' Blush, so I think that will be the last time!!!

picnicbasketcase · 12/05/2012 18:32

Got rid of pushchairs when both DC got to three.

exexpat · 12/05/2012 18:37

Both DCs when they were nearly 4 as they still napped after lunch, and having a pushchair meant we could be out all day.

They were walking most of the time apart from that, but I think a lot of it depends whether you go most places by car or by public transport - we were in Tokyo and went most places by train, which tended to involve a lot of walking. If we'd been living in the UK suburbs and mostly going places where you pull up outside in a car, and they can nap in a car seat, then the pushchair would probably have been ditched a lot earlier
