As it says, really. What's a nice, maybe unusual, present for a first baby? Or did you receive something which turned out to be worth its weight in gold?

A large blanket that can also be put on floor and used as playmat when they are bigger.
A night light/ baby sleep aid I've got a great one that has heartbeat sound and projects stars DS (now 6mo) loves it and we've been using it since he was 10wks or so

OMG - the star wrap is awesome (I actually bought mine myself not a gift) - we now have the next size up one too.

My best gift was a baby 'medical' kit put together by a colleague of mine. It had thinks like baby calpol, baby nurofen, colic drops, gripe water, saline nasal drops, teething blanket, stacking cups, some chocs for me.

I appreciate you can't use some of these things from birth and actually we had no need for the gripe water or colic drops but I would have not know about the nasal drops had they not been in the 'kit'.

I second no soft toys...clothes in 6+ month size are invaluable as everyone gets the small sizes!

The best gift I got was a package of stuff my friend had found indispensable in her kid's first year - a copy of Dear Zoo, a Taggie, another beloved toy and a bulk pack of AA batteries. And at some point in the last 8 months each of those things has been utterly brilliant. Plus, I just loved the personal sentiment behind it - 'we loved these things and they might help you too'.

I'm coming to this very late in the day, but if anyone is looking for ideas, it doesn't matter if it's a current list, I guess?

My favourite gift, which I have since bought for other new babies, is a John Lewis christening blanket, crocheted in pure wool. It is super light weight, natural fibre, washes well, and doubles up as a fantastic swaddling blanket. Both DDs have loved it. It costs about £20.

Nursery rhyme book. Becasue i couldn't remember them from when i was little. Saying that a homecooked meal, and offer to look after them for an hour while they sleep/bath is the best gift

Don't buy horrible clother, little bibs (pointless) or pretend shoes.

Cash - the parents can buy whatever they need whenever they need. The cash would be accompanied by a card, a small soft toy and a bouquet of flowers for the mother.

One of these http://www.bobbiemccabedesigns.co.uk/baby.html Bobbie McCabe Designs.

I got one a couple of years ago and it's now my staple for presents, everyone loves them, they are very different and they will be kept forever.

Hope this works!

however, if you're going to buy bigger clothes, stick to babygros/sleepsuits. Outfits tend to be seasonal, I had to take back some 6-9 month stuff as it was 'height of winter' thickness for the middle of summer Confused
