My DD is in a 2.5 and I love the mamas and papas dream pods, best ones by far and can usually get them half price.

dizzy77 · 30/04/2012 21:25

For a tiny one, check the bag covers their weight (some start at 10ib) and has the poppers as the side under the arms do you can clip then to stop the baby slipping down. Grobag branded ones come with a little chart that suggests what should be worn underneath with which tog according to room temp, you can probably find this online. I started with their suggested minimum and built up, DS seemed a bit cooler than their suggestions. Babies will wake if cold, we sometimes add a single layer of light cellular blanket after the heating goes off if it's a cold night. I honestly don't understand how my mum managed without sleeping bags!

BikeRunSki · 30/04/2012 21:31

Grobag branded ones are good (have never had any M&P ones) as are JojoMamaneBebe ones; the filling in the cheap ones tends to clump up. Check minmum weight/age for 0-6 month size ones. DD is currently in DS's old 2.5 tog ones with a sleepsuit underneath, but with summer (pah!) around the corner (????)it might be worth getting some 1 tog ones are dressing your baby more warmly underneath.

My mum has an amazing knitted growbag type thing that must be getting on for 50 years old, that she swears we all slept in. She calls it an "Angel's Nest".

Gro-bags are great for wriggly babies. We always stuck with the 2.5 tog as you get more use out of it, and just reduced the amount of clothing depending on room temperature.

BTW, if you don't want to pay full price, TK Maxx usually have them for around 50%-60% off.

Cazm2 · 01/05/2012 03:44

Thanks for your replies. It's so hard getting used to working out how hot etc! Our bedroom is west facing and gets extremelyhot in the summer

Just adding myself as loads of good info and DD due in two weeks.

fhdl34 · 01/05/2012 08:00

if you go on the grobag website, in their faqs they have a little table on what they should wear depending on the tog of your sleepbag and the room temperature. My DD's been in one since we got home from the hospital, she weighed 8.12.5 at birth so was above the minimum weight. I'm on my phone so can't link to website. A friend told me though that they can't wear them in Moses baskets, something to do with air circulating but don't know if that's true or not. Didn't matter to me as she slept in a crib anyway but thought I should mention. If you don't mind secondhand you can pick them up for just a few quid on ebay. My DD is 4 months now and getting a bit on the long side. One more growth spurt and she'll be in the next size up! I love grobags, no worrying about kicking off covers, wriggling underneath them, they're bloody wonderful.

MadameChinLegs · 01/05/2012 08:13

2.5 tog then adjust the clothing. mines in a s/s bodysuit and l/s sleepsuit over. If ee have a cold snap I put a l/s body rather than s/s. Ive heard if v.v.warm you can just put them in a nappy in the grobag.

NorthernNumpty · 01/05/2012 08:19

I like the slumber sac ones (on amazon) they are half the price of grobag. Ds was swaddled for first few weeks and then straight into sleeping bag, still in them now at 2.2. Remember that they need enough clothes on so their arms don't get cold. The 1 tog ones are great in summer, no clothes on underneath.
I am planning on keeping mine in sleeping bag once we convert his cot to a bed but will do the duvet thing once in a proper bed

CarpeJugulum · 01/05/2012 08:19

We found DS was fine with blankets in his moses basket.

When he moved into the cot, all bets were off with blankets. We ended up with 4 bags - 2 x 2.5 and 2 x 1 tog.

We got more use from the 2.5 tog, but the 1.0 tog bags were invaluable in the summer.

DS is now 19mo (Shock how did that happen?!) and has just gone into duvet and (anecdotally!) seems to be coping with it better than those of his group who stayed in blankets.

DonInKillerHeels · 01/05/2012 08:20

Grobag ones are brilliant, and you can often get them half price in TK Maxx; total bargain.

DS is in 2.5 tog for winter and 1 for summer. Adjust clothing to temperature.

CuppaTeaJanice · 01/05/2012 08:26

My favourite bag is from Sainsburys - it's thick and snuggly.

But if you want several, the cheapest way is to look for a bundle on ebay, or at car boot sales. There are always lots of sleeping bag bargains there.

WorrisomeHeart · 01/05/2012 08:38

Mothercare often have buy 1, get 1 free on their grobag version. They are ok - we've used them since 3 mths (had a lovely newborn Merino Kids one from NB) and they've been fine. The only problem now is if DS is particularly active and bouncing around his cot before he sleeps, he tends to pop himself out of it - can't imagine a duvet would be any better with that though!

PotteringAlong · 01/05/2012 08:47

We use 2.5 tog and I'm another sainsburys fan - some lovely bags from there and very thick / snuggly!

Reeney1978 · 01/05/2012 08:53

We loved grobags and my mum knitted us a couple which were the softest, snuggliest things ever! She refused to do one my size though SadWink we used them from birth and thought we'd keep going once the side was off the cot but ds had other ideas, transitioned to a duvet well at 2 ish. We loved the travel ones as we tend to do distance travel at night and we could transfer ds warm and still asleep. His first winter was super cold and they were our saviour.

WheresMyCow · 01/05/2012 08:54

We had 2.5 tog Primark ones for 0-6 months, then I got a bundle of 1 tog 6-18 month ones off Ebay (grobag and JoJoMamanBebe - both were good)and we had 2.5 tog ones from Ikea.

He's currently in a 2.5 tog grobag.

I LOVE sleeping bags - DS was in them in his moses basket with no problems, and we used them as soon as he reached the minimum weight. as dizzy7 said, we also put a cellular blanket over him once the heating has gone off and if it seems cold. Smile

Spookey80 · 01/05/2012 08:59

I have also used the primary ones and they are excellent quality, but they never seem to have sizes bigger than 12months so havent used them past this. I love sleeping bags, I have also bought form to tkmaxx and matalan. All good, and not bad pricing. My 19 mth ds is still in his sisters pink bags!

Wolfiefan · 01/05/2012 09:00

Grobag her! Grobags come with a guide of what she should wear. 20c long sleeved vest. 18c long sleeve vest ang pj top.

mejon · 01/05/2012 11:15

We have Grobags and Slumbersacs and there's no difference apart from price. Both have cotton inners with the same wadding so I begrudge paying for the 'name'. Both types have always come with a temperature guide and information on what to wear underneath. DD2 is in a 2.5tog and wears a short sleeved vest and sleepsuit unless it is very cold and then I'll put her in a long sleeved vest too. At the height of summer she'll go into her 1 tog one with either a short or long sleeved vest and no sleepsuit depending on how warm (ha!) it is.

rrreow · 01/05/2012 12:00

We use a Grobag. Got it from Amazon which is quite a bit cheaper than buying it on the highstreet.

DS (1y/o) is in a 2.5 tog one and wears a short sleeved vest & sleepsuit underneath it. Our room is about the same temperature as yours in winter. As it gets warmer we'll probably put him in a longsleeved vest and omit the sleepsuit.

brettgirl2 · 01/05/2012 13:55

In a moses basket a 1 tog should be plenty because they stay much warmer than in a cot.

YBR · 01/05/2012 20:18

our LO had blankets in the Moses Basket and now sleeping bags in the cot. We got one from M&S because I had vouchers I'd never spend. I then used that as a template to sew one myself which is more adjustable in size but I've no idea how much tog. We usually have her in short-sleeved vest and sleepsuit underneath but a couple of times (over heated hospital/hotel) just a vest. Our room is about the same temperature as yours.

I've found it worth having two in case of night-time nappy leaks.

booksandchoc · 01/05/2012 22:06

My DD is a wee ice cube, she wears ss vest, ls sleep suit and cardigan in her 2.5 grobag, plus 2 blankets on top.

alittlebitcountry · 01/05/2012 22:41

If you have one nearby TK Maxx can be good for Gro-Bag brand at reduced prices, ours has had them quite often in the last few months.

notcitrus · 01/05/2012 23:09

Grobags are currently only a couple quid plus postage on ebay - I'd have at least three as they take a while to dry.
Dd has been in one in her moses basket since 8 weeks when she started escaping her blankets - she's been in a sleepsuit and vest and I think the bag is 1.5 tog. I did omit the vest when we had that very hot weather a few weeks ago.

I have a mountain of grobags of various brands and not had any clumping issues - it's just the patterns fade or go bobbly on the cheaper ones so they don't look so nice.
