How far will your 2 year old walk?

And how long will it take?

I think DP is deluding himself that DD will walk half a mile home uphill from the CM without it taking til bedtime!

DD1 walked around Paignton Zoo last week, and that is hilly. I was knackered but she only needed carrying for around 5 mins.

I would say half a mile 30 mins? But then my judgement of distance is notoriously bad.

VegimalStyle · 29/03/2012 17:59

If I tell DD it's a race she'd run all day until she won! As long as they're used to walking and they have an incentive kids will walk for ages, even at that age. If it's a good incentive they'll even do it quickly!

My ds at 2 would easily walk over a mile to the bus stop, would also walk the hilly zoo/castles with steps etc all day. Couldn't give much idea of time though but didn't really take any longer generally I don't think.

Maybe I am under estimating her then!

Let him give it a go :o

Half a mile uphill at the end of the day, I don't think my 2 year old would manage.

Maybe half that?

TheSinglePringle · 29/03/2012 18:02

My son is 2 and it has taken us 1 hour for a 20 min walk! Mainly because he was stopping to look at every ant he saw

scarlettsmummy2 · 29/03/2012 18:03

My daughter has just turned three and she can walk 2.5 miles without complaint. Although she does walk a lot with the childminder so is used to it.

Yama · 29/03/2012 18:05

My 19 month old will happily walk half a mile. It does take a lot longer than my normally very brisk pace.

I am very keen for my two to be good walkers. You gotta start them young.

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 29/03/2012 18:05

my 2y old regularly walks home from nursery. about 1 kilometer, quite even. 20 - 30 min (longer when the weather is nice and there are loads of things o look at)

SootySweepandSue · 29/03/2012 18:08

My 18 mo can walk 1.5 miles easily. She's like the duracell bunny. I find that if she pushes a dolls buggy that she walks quickly and in an orderly fashionSmile.

SardineQueen · 29/03/2012 18:09

The question often isn't how far can they walk but how long will it take...

AKMD · 29/03/2012 18:24

Envy at all you people with walking children. DS will do about 20m before he's rugby tackling me round the ankles. How do you make them walk?!

VegimalStyle · 29/03/2012 18:26

I was lucky, mine wanted to walk. She refused to sit in her buggy and wanted to push it instead!

prepschoolreject · 29/03/2012 18:26

My now 3Yo can easliy walk 5miles + at adult pace (will run if allowed, so I would have to jog to keep up). At 18 months, happily walk 2miles reasonably quickly (adult pace), walk all day if allowed to wander around (stop to look at things etc)

And, yes, it's bloody draining.

scarlettsmummy2 · 29/03/2012 18:56

I use bribery and little games and reverse psychology (bet you can't run to that bench/ bin). Also often have sweets.

RitaMorgan · 29/03/2012 19:03

My 20 month old will walk the half a mile to the park in about 20 minutes normally. If I carry him it takes 10.

leftmysociallifeatthedoor · 29/03/2012 19:08

My 18 month old would walk that easily. I tried the dolls buggy trick to speed her up. I don't think she's overly maternal tbh - she pushed the pram off the pavement and cackled laughed.

Ds at 2 walked miles and miles. We never used a buggy after he was 15 months because he was not a devil like his sister quite good and seemed to enjoy just walking and did it quite quickly and without stopping to examine every stone / blade of grass / spider / dog poo.....

hairtwiddler · 29/03/2012 19:24

My 2.5yr old can walk really far - a couple of miles isn't an issue. It's whether he will walk really far that's the issue.....some days he just cements his shoes to the ground and refuses to go anywhere.

AKMD · 29/03/2012 19:25

Bribery etc. seem to have no effect. He wails :(

MrsChemist · 29/03/2012 19:28

DS is 2.7 and he can walk about a mile, but veeeeeery sloooowly. It would take about 45-60 minutes.

Itfinallyhappened · 29/03/2012 19:29

Dd 2.9 walks 3/4 mile in less than half an hour, she does this 4 times on a good day, I always have the buggy for putting her in if needed though.

Astr0naut · 29/03/2012 19:29

Depends entirely on his mood. I think he can probably walk a long way if he doesn't think he has to walk. He can run around the close or the zoo all day - unless he's told he has to, then it's all "want a carry!" Like that's going to happen.

In all fairness, we do live in a very hilly area and even I can't be arsed once I get to the end of the road!

Astr0naut · 29/03/2012 19:31

Oh, how long.

About 5 times as long as it'd take me based on our walking to nursery experience: takes me just over 2 minutes; takes him over 10. But that's because we have to stop and look at the lions eating honey in the tree. Confused

SocietyClowns · 29/03/2012 19:38

My two year old is totally incapable of walking to the park across the road but insisted on doing a three hour walk in the Lake District at the weekend (three hours at her speed, the walk wasn't that long but still pretty impressive for someone so small)...
So I guess the answer is really whether they WANT to walk Wink

Tee2072 · 29/03/2012 20:13

My 2.9 year old can walk half a mile in about 10 minutes. But he's not one to look at every little thing, he just walks!
