How far will your 2 year old walk?

And how long will it take?

I think DP is deluding himself that DD will walk half a mile home uphill from the CM without it taking til bedtime!

AKMD

By being as hard as nails Grin

DH ends up DD2 all the time. One request and a doe-eyed look and he melts. Last year when DD1 was 3, he often ended up carrying both of them. Plus the shopping. People would say "oh I saw your DH in town, he didn't look very comfortable" Grin

Me, on the other hand. They don't even bother asking. They know what the answer is Grin

OTOH mine both wanted to walk and when they started and asked for a carry, I would say walk or pushchair. They chose walk. Carry was never an option. (I am a bit unsteady on my legs so it's not the case that I am really super-nanny about it, just it's not going to happen and I can't let them think it's a possibility).

So that's it really.

Probably not much help!

I have tried being tough but trying to walk dragging a screaming toddler clamped limpet-like around both knees is tiring and unproductive. I am pg with DC2 though so maybe it is time to lay down the law and hope SS don't appear on my doorstep.

Put him in the pushchair, AKMD?

How old is he?

SocietyClowns · 29/03/2012 20:48

My dd1 has walked everywhere since she was just over 2 (and I was pregnant with dd2 and really couldn't carry her) and got evicted from the pushchair when she was 2.5 (because I needed it for dd2!). She's always been a much better walker than dd2 who does play on being the 'baby' (a tall and chunky one though)... Wink. She knows I won't carry her much but takes full advantage of dh who will carry her on his shoulders if she gives him her pouty face.
With dd1 I used to race her back from nursery 'I am faster!' which really worked to speed her up Grin. Doesn't work with dd2 though, she just goes backwards if I try Sad

AKMD · 29/03/2012 20:52

DS is just 2 Sardine. I sold his buggy so that's a no-go. DC2's pushchair will have a buggy board :)

emsyj · 29/03/2012 20:56

DD will walk fecking miles. She hates the buggy and refuses to get in it (if I try and put her in, she screams and wails and arches her back). So we just walk everywhere - she's pretty speedy although liable to be distracted by exciting things.

headfairy · 29/03/2012 20:59

dd will on a good day walk to ds's preschool and back, which is a total distance of about 2.5km with only the occasional carry. it takes me about 30 mins each way with her. Luckily she's quite in to racing at the moment so we have "races" where she runs and I walk a little bit faster alongside her :o

youarekidding · 29/03/2012 21:02

Think it's child dependent!

DS (now 7.7) would have walked it at 2 yo no problems and still had energy, he was fairly quick too.

Friends DD1 (now 8.3) would have walked it easily, but been tired and would have been slow paced.

Her DD2 ( now 6.9) wouldn't have walked it at all and still wouldn't now at 6!. She is the most energetic and sporty of all 3 of them and can run faster, swim faster than them too - and she is the youngest. Just refuses hates walking Grin

I would say 15- 20 minutes for half mile for a 2 yo uphill at the end of a day.

SardineQueen · 29/03/2012 21:03

If I were in your situation I would be prepared for a week of awfulness and then that's it. You need to never ever ever crack and give a carry though.

Does he have one of those scooters with 3 wheels? I did used to pull DD2 around on her scooter a bit!

StarryEyedMama · 29/03/2012 21:03

I struggled to get DD to walk anywhere where as DS (turned 2 in Jan) walks about 2 miles at the weekend with his little Littlelife backpack - I guess it depends on how she is feeling, this is DS on a good day, we wouldn't attempt it on a day that he was feeling off.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 29/03/2012 21:07

aw, AMKD, I am on my second non-walker. DD2 only goes to the end of the street before wailing for a pick-up
dd1 was the same, and now walks the mile to school at a reasonable pace of 15-20 mins - no-one ever overtakes us, so i think all these speedy two year old are exceptional rather than the norm.

SardineQueen · 29/03/2012 21:11

Yes also meant to say that just 2 is v little. Most just 2 year olds around here are in pushchairs. Many 3 year olds are in pushchairs!

They are all different. Mine wanted to walk so that's what happened - I would rather have had them in the pushchair longer TBH easier all round.

If you are getting a new pushchair for the new baby maybe you could get one that suits younger and older and put DS in it until the baby comes? Then you can use the pushchair or walk tactic too Smile

SardineQueen · 29/03/2012 21:12

You can pick strollers up for toddlers really cheap as well.

Don't knock yourself out when you're pg trying to get DS to do something that he doesn't want to do.

2.3 y.o. DS will walk 1/4 to 1/2 a mile, which can take 20 - 40 mins. He rarely responds to motivational strategies. It's only been in the last few weeks that he's really wanted to walk at all.

Springforward · 29/03/2012 21:20

My 2 year old could walk a mile without too much trouble, though it helped if there were puddles to jump in :)

AKMD · 29/03/2012 21:20

I am being very negative here but the reason I sold the pushchair was because he wanted to push it. Very slowly. And screamed every time I adjusted his steering so he didn't go into the road Hmm If I tried to put him in it he would go as stiff as a board, kick, scream, slap me and wriggle round so I was trying to strap him in face-down.

I am positive about the scooter though. He really wants one (has done for ages) but I'm just a scaredy-cat about him rolling off the pavement :)

Springforward · 29/03/2012 21:41

We got a scooter, would recommend - godsend fot the times he does get tired because he can rest while i drag it! Not great for back but better than carrying, for me.

Girlsville · 29/03/2012 22:07

Do your two year olds hodl yoru hands all the time when they are walking? Mine will hold it under duress to cross the road, but on the pavement wouldnt dream of it. Am inetrested as to what others do?

bronze · 29/03/2012 22:11

Ds 3 walks miles. He's never been in a pushchair and I've always slinged, slung? Him so now he's bigger he has to walk. We recently went for a nine mile walk and he must have walked at least half of it in separate sections. I use a little life backpack day to day but he normally holds my hand.

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 29/03/2012 22:11

handholding on busy roads (only a short distance for us) and when crossing any road. rest of the time dc walks slightly in front of me on the fence side of the pavement. only works because dc isn't a bolter, would use reins or harness otherwise.

Tee2072 · 29/03/2012 22:12

Mine does, Girlsville. He didn't used to but he got put in his pushchair too many times and finally got the hint!

I can always tell when he doesn't feel well as he asks to go in the pushchair, which comes with us for long journeys or shopping trips. It usually hold shopping though, not my son!

hermionestranger · 29/03/2012 22:14

Ds2 at 15 months would walk that. Slowly but he walks EVEYWHERE! He loves his legs and will only go in his buggy if he absolutely has too! Ds1 would walk about 100 yards tops.

See how our little one goes, make no plans for a while yet with regards to distance.

AngelDog · 29/03/2012 22:15

DS holds my hand most of the time (at his request), Girlsville. I'd be happy with him not holding it if not next to a busy main road though. He's never been a bolter.
