Am I the only mum of 3 & 5 yr olds NOT to feed them a constant stream of cakes/ biscuits/ crisps between school and evening meal?

I offer a drink and a snack: one (kiddie) gingerbread man, some fruit or a couple of breadsticks once we get home from school. The journey home is literally 3 minutes walk. Then it's play etc for about an hour and a half until evening meal.

My friends dole out multiple sugary biscuits (custard cream anyone?) then moan that their kids don't eat their veg.

Left to their own devices my kids would love to eat loads of sugary snacks but it's my choice to say "no" and that "one is enough" knowing that dinner is on the way. And I cook lovely fresh food for their meals.

I've even had one mum try to give me a packet of choccy biscuits "in case my child felt left out" If I'd had my wits about me I might have offered to cook her kids a decent lasagne (from a treasured family recipe) to compensate for all the quorn crap that she tries to feed her anaemic looking kids!

I honestly feel judged by this woman as a bad mum for not providing endless munchies.

FWIW my kids are above average height and weight and full of beans. They also love eating out and trying new foods. it is a pleasure to cook for them and to take them out to eat. My philosophy wrt food is to enjoy good quality food and to respect the source of your food as well as respecting one's body and health.

Am I really so alone?
Anyone else say "no" to the sugar monsters for the sake of good health of their kids?

Hell yeah. We have cakes/ biscuits occasionally but they're always homemade and by and large DD will ask for a yogurt or some cheese if she's hungry. We just don't do the sugary/processed stuff.

Hulababy · 07/03/2012 19:47

No you are not alone.

But I did lol at this:

To be fair you are judging a lot too you know.

I think this warrants my first ever Biscuit!

I will offer my 2 year old dd a biscuit between meals occasionally but I usually offer a piece of fruit. We don't ban sugar in our house though, I truly believe it can lead to binging on processed sugary foods in secret as children get older. Most of what my dd eats is cooked from scratch (I'm a stay at home mum so have the time) and a few times a week I might give her a choc chip fairy cake or flap jack or something like that for pudding after her dinner. She also has the odd bit of chocolate though we haven't gone there with sweets at all and don't intend to until she is older.

We really do need that medal emoticon. OP YANBU - well done you.

lolalotta · 07/03/2012 20:27

Oh and we don't do crisps, only because we never had them growing up and it was drummed into us that they have no nutritional value!

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 07/03/2012 20:30

Wow. You are literally amazing and the only mother of your kind ever. Your medal is surely in post, but I expect you'll get a few biscuits while you wait!

LemonDifficult · 07/03/2012 20:30

I KNOW you!!

You are the judgey, grim mother who needs to validate her parenting choices by putting other people's down. We used to be friends. (Sorry your DC, didn't get an invite to my DC's birthday party this year. It's just that after last year's sighing about how you couldn't believe how much sugar was on the table, and how everyone would be stressed out from it all and how you'd need to tke your child home because of the dangerous sugar rush, we just thought it was safer for all concerned if your DC didn't come.)

LemonDifficult · 07/03/2012 20:31

Oh, and me and my DCs would love that custard cream if you're still offering.

LemonDifficult · 07/03/2012 20:32

Oh. Wait. This is a wind up, isn't it?

Normologist · 07/03/2012 20:34

What's your username stand for OP?

JjandtheBean · 07/03/2012 20:35

I have a 3 and nearly 5yo.

3yo is home all day waiting for a preschool place, but when ds finishes they have fruit/salad/breadsticks maybe a rich tea (I get the sainsburys mini animal rich teas) fridays they get sweets from the corner shop. If ds comes home with a certificate/sticker etc he gets a sweet. Home made cakes/biscuits after most meals though tbh!

All in moderation, ds is 15.2kg dd is 14.1kg not sure of height but they're both in age 3 and 4 clothes

Doitnicelyplease · 07/03/2012 20:37

That's a mighty high horse you are on there OP - watch you don't fall...

FarloRigel · 07/03/2012 20:42

Aw, have a Biscuit OP. Don't fret, it's sugar free.

LeeCoakley · 07/03/2012 20:45

Is this another poor attempt by a lazy journalist to flush out yet more fruitarian oneupmanship?

FGM · 07/03/2012 20:46

Ouch!

Seems like I've stepped on a nerve here...

We love a bit of mucky food here but just not before dinner. I was brought up with the whole "don't ruin your appetite" thing. But it looks like I'm unusual in that respect.

I'm absolutely not a journo, I just don't get the evening biscuit frenzy. I really didn't expect to piss everyone off so much.

so, what's wrong with quorn then?

40notTrendy · 07/03/2012 20:52

My ds eats....yes....wait for it....multiple sugary biscuits AND, believe it or not, veg, fresh food and likes to try new foods. Amazing eh?

Plonker · 07/03/2012 20:57

Oh absolutely OP, indeed you are the only one. How marvellous you truly are.

Shakey1500 · 07/03/2012 20:57

I don't think you are the only one (to be pedantic). I don't tend to give DS anything other than a drink after school before dinner. Unless dinner is going to be a while. But he's an early sleeper so we tend to eat dinner between 4.30/5.00pm anyway. But I'm certainly not arsed about what any other parent chooses to do :)

ruddynorah · 07/03/2012 20:59

I feed mine nothing but party rings and pink wafers.

The5thFishy · 07/03/2012 21:04

My children go and harvest, mill and bake their snacks every evening. Even on swimming nights.
