My DS is 3 in may, and just wondering what bedtime everyone thinks is suitable (he does have tv on in bed before going to sleep) to really, what is the best time for him to go to his bedroom for the night?

dd now 2.9 usedto go to bed with us at 9.30-10. but she napped in the day for oer an hour an a half. on saturday i cut out the nap and shes been perfect so far going t bed at 7.30-8.

we watch an episode of angelina and then the tv goes off read a coupke of storied and shes in bed.
i didn't think it would be this easy to be honest but so far its been good.

i dont think the tv in the bedroom is a good thing either i never had a tv in my room just had one in the living room when i was growing up.

We weren't strictly on a time, but ds at that age needed around 11.5 hrs sleep. So usually aim for in bed settled down around 8 to be getting up around 730, his natural waking time. Some of his wee friends were bed at 7 but they were earlier risers and naturally woke up around 6 or half 6. I always felt blessed to have a ds who woke that hour later as I'm such a night owl myself.

AnonymousBird · 06/03/2012 20:02

My children (now 7 and 6) always went to bed around 7.30. Term time, they pretty much still do TBH... though now they go up at 7.30, have quiet time/we read and they are lights out somewhere between 7.45 and 8.

I have absolutely no idea when children start to go to bed a bit later. Part of me hopes they always are lights out by 8!

TV in bedroom Shock a bit I'm afraid. Even we don't have a TV in our bedroom!!!! Read him a story!

Nearly 3yr old son (still can't believe that) goes to bed at 8pm and is asleep in 2/3minutes.

snala · 06/03/2012 20:08

My dc are aged 2.5 and 4.2.
Bath at 6.40
Story's
Bed for 7.15.
They get up at 7 am

We don't have a tv in the bedroom. They are still babies ,it's unnecessary. It would cause poor sleep habits as the tv would give to much stimulation before bed.

slowburner · 06/03/2012 20:08

DD is 19mo, she is a terrible sleeper. At the moment she wakes between 7 - 8am and has an hour and a half nap sometimes between 11 and 2, she then goes to bed and asleep by 7.30pm. I am sure when she drops her nap she will go to bed earlier again :)

blondieminx · 06/03/2012 20:09

Depends on what time you think it's reasonable to be woken up by your toddler Grin

Our DD who's 2.2 has bath at 7.30, milk and stories and in bed by 8.15, usually asleep within 5-15 mins after that. She has an hour long lunchtime nap. She usually wakes at around 8.15am...

Works for us, DH commutes to London and he's home in time to bath her Smile so they get to see each other in the evenings at least. And it gives me time in the morning to drink that crucial first cuppa, get myself ready and crack on with a few chores Smile

toddlerama · 06/03/2012 20:10

  1. Bath about 6.30. They've been in this routine albeit with night feeds too from about 4 months. They're now 3 & 4. If it ain't broke, don't fix it Grin

Do give some thought to breaking the tv habit. It's important for mental health to go to sleep without external stimuli. That includes music.

stressheaderic · 06/03/2012 20:15

DD just turned 2. At 7.30pm she has stories, PJs on, cuddles, in bed and usually asleep around 8. She wakes up at 8am normally. 2 hour nap in the day.

No TV here I'm afraid, not until she's at least 14. In fact, I hardly have the bloody thing on at all, the noise gets on my nerves.

RitaMorgan · 06/03/2012 20:17

Do you have any more information about that toddlerama?

confuzed90 · 06/03/2012 20:20

He goes to his bedroom at 7. has tv on and falls asleep about 8, gets up at about 7 to 8. He doesn't have naps in the day. Will think about this tele habit.

So, confused, he's only 3. It's not too late to start a better bedtime pattern. Just remove the tv from his room. Do you have a playroom or family room it could go in?

Then start a better bedtime routine. (Supper, bath, story, bedtime.) You have to be a bit firm. I would say about 7 is right, depending on your family circumstances. I mean if your DH gets home at 7, then let him see DS before bed, so make it 7:30 (or whatever) But you and DH need grown up time, too.

And remember, he will soon need to be getting up earlier for nursery and school, so an early bedtime is a good idea.

PriscillaQueenOfTheDesert · 06/03/2012 20:31

Ok so no tv in bedrooms here and I understand why it's not a good thing to have a toddler falling asleep with the tv on but what is wrong with music?

My son likes to have his "laxation" (rainforest/sea etc sounds) cd on when he goes to bed.

Is it really that bad for mental health Confused

RitaMorgan · 06/03/2012 20:32

Sleep at 8, waking up at 7-8 sounds perfect to me.

pookle10 · 06/03/2012 20:33

TV!!!!

eggtimer · 06/03/2012 20:35

Definitely no tv in the bedroom.
Our DTs are 2 1/2
Up to bath at 7, stories and asleep by 8pm
They wake at about 7am,

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 06/03/2012 20:37

Why does a 2 year old need a TV in his room (why does anyone for that matter?)

To answer your question op - ds2 is 3.9 and is asleep by 7pm, just like his 6.6 year old brother.

Bath, story, sleep for both of them.

faeriemoo · 06/03/2012 20:38

My 3 year old DD is in bed mostly some time between 6 and 7 (dependent on her/my mood Wink ) and is often asleep the minute her head hits the pillow. Any later than 7.30 and I start stressing.

She'll sometimes get to watch a DVD in bed (shares with her 6 year old sister) on a Friday night, but again, she's normally asleep within minutes.

QuickLookBusy · 06/03/2012 20:45

Could you tell him the TV has broken and take it out of the bedroom?

Do it during the day so if he gets upset about it, he has time to calm down before bedtime.

Tell him you are going to read a story to him, instead of the tv. Let him choose one. My DDs loved their bedtime story and it really calms them down before sleep. Smile

BsshBossh · 06/03/2012 22:12

At 2 my DD was asleep by 7.30 (stories started at 7.15); since turning 3 and doing more activities and going to pre-school she's needing more sleep so is down by 7 (stories at 6.45). At 2 she woke around 6.30 (which suited us for work); at 3 we have to wake her but if we don't then any time between 7.30 and 8.30 (occasionally 9!).

welovesausagedogs · 06/03/2012 22:37

Having a tv in a bedroom is meant to one of the worst things for getting children to sleep. For a child of his age 7:30 is a good time. My two elder children aged 4 & 2, have dinner at 6:00, then a relaxing bath at 6:30, then a story and then to bed before 7:30. My GP recommended this routine to us, when DS was restless. It's important for young children to have stories and baths before bed to relax and calm them and get them into a routine to help them sleep. Having a tv on will make your child alert and his brain over-active so he will find it difficult to sleep. It's also important that children of his age have 12 hours sleep, so if you need to wake up at 7:00 then he should be in bed by 7:00. Bedtime is reasonably flexible as long as he gets the 12 hours he needs in order to restore proteins and grow.

MegBusset · 06/03/2012 22:42

DS2 will be 3 in April. He goes to bed about 7pm and wakes around 7.30am, on days when he's not at preschool in the afternoon he'll nap for 1.5 hours as well.

Another one pretty Shock about TV in bedroom!

4madboys · 06/03/2012 22:44

7:30ish sometimes earlier, sometimes a bit later adn he sleeps through till after 7am in the morning, sometimes he will sleep in and occasionally he still has a day time nap, normally only if he is poorly, having a growth spurt or tired from pre-school.

no tv in his bedroom but he shares with ds3 who is 7 and they have a cd player and sometimes listen to a story cd.
