Can I have opinions on double buggies please?

Firstly, will I definitely need one with 21 months between DD and dc2 due in Oct? I used a sling a lot with DD, then a baby bjorn which I still stick her in now - could I sling the baby and just use a stroller for DD do you reckon? She'll be going to nursery a couple of days a week so its not like we'll be out and about all together every day....

If I do need one, which one would you recommend?

Thanks all

Hello!

We've noticed that this thread is quite old now, and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing the top-performing pushchairs on the market, including both twin and tandem, to find the best double buggy for 2019.

Hope this helps! Flowers

I umned and ahhed for ages about getting a P&T when DC2 was coming along as the age gap was 2 years 5 months and I thought DC1 would be walking pretty quickly. However it turned out to be the best decision ever. At just 5, and a large 5 at that, he still easily fits into the top seat. I know most mums would say 5!!! He should be walking, but he is such an outright pain when out shopping that to be able to say FGS just get in and be quiet for 5 mins is a godsend. He has never been a walker, and always moaned and moaned!

I found it collapses really small, smaller than my mamas and papas we had for dc1, it's very manoeuvrable and goes easily on the bus. You can steer one-handed even with both in there, and we now leave off the double seat so dc1 has to walk and are happy to use it and not scale down to a stroller. It's a very comfy ride too. And really holds its resale value.

Best decision I ever made!

Sorry WeeLors - I've only just seen this. Yes, the Joovy that they have in Mothercare is the 'ultralight' one - it's a couple of pounds lighter than the standard one. I really do swear by mine - the only tiny downside is that your toddler can't lean back comfortably. It wasn't an issue for us as DD has never napped in the buggy but if you're used to your toddler sleeping in the buggy it probably won't do. The dollar exchange rate right now is even better than when I bought it so it may be closer to the £170 mark. Warning though - there will be a Customs import fee to pay - it was about £15 for me. Still well under the £200 mark though which I think is unbeatable for a double.

In fact I frequently use the Joovy as a triple (I childmind an 18mo) - two seated and one standing without any trouble at all.

I have 18 month, 22 month and 26 month gaps - I tried two other double buggies before I gave in and got a P&T sport. I used to hate them Blush and cursed myself as I bought it but I am so glad. Still using it as a single for my 2.5 year old and DC3 will jump in when he needs to as well.

Tiger , it is a sport. It's 2 and a half years old now and I know they have updated the designs, esp the brake which was stiff to operate. But I still love it. I really liked all the different ways of using it and became adept at changing how it was arranged depending on who was napping/awake!

CultureMix · 06/05/2012 20:11

I have 24 months between my two and in the end got a P&T and loved it - a 180 degrees change from my initial position I might add. At first when DS2 was born I said I'd go with buggy + buggy board or buggy + sling. Just didn't work out - the 2-year old got into everything, didn't want to ride the board (and can't force this) so had to go a toddler's snail pace with a crying baby when just wanted to get home. For the sling it was impractical - for me - as not free enough to bend down, run after toddler etc. The final straw came when DS1 hopped off the buggy board while crossing a busy road Shock.

So I gave in and bought a 2nd-hand P&T and it was great. I just regret not getting it from Day One especially as the baby outgrows the newborn carrier section so quickly. Three weeks after buying the P&T my SIL came to visit and we took both children plus her 10-year old onto the train, into London, on the tube, spent all day at the Natural History Museum, and back.... and it was fine! Though we did get kind strangers helping us take the buggy up the tube steps...

All in all the P&T lasted me nearly a year and a half, it's no longer in use now but at the time was a lifesaver. I will say I rarely if ever had to fold it down, mainly only used it for walks to and from the house, e.g. head into town in the morning and walk back.
