Gender appropriate toys?

Last night I was talking to a friend who I haven't seen since before christmas. She was tellin me about the presents her DD had got and was saying that her mum had bought her a garage with lots of cars as her DD loves cars. She then said that her grandfather had gone absolutely belistic at her mother for buying a "boy's toy for a girl!" It made me smile somewhat as I remember well that when I was a child and not into dolls I played with scalectrics and trains and cars, my DS, although totally into cars and trains also has a kitchen and lots of play food. So, do you buy gender specific toys? and if so would you draw a line at anything?

Think if I had a daughter I would allow anything, but think I'd be a bit uncomfortable if DS asked for a barby doll, lol.

I agree with you Masiemog re kids clothes - hideous boys clothes with narratives like "Here comes trouble" & "Little Geezer" & girls clothes with "Angel" & "princess" which just remind me of some kind of junior porn star.

I find it incredibly difficult to buy my kids plain clothes at a reasonable price. I can't understand who inhabits the marketing departments of these clothes companies.

That said my Dd (20mnths) sat gazing in rapture at a picture of Bratz dolls in DS comic and just said "Ladies" "Friends". Argh - I see Barbie's pointy breasts looming over the horizon.

Candide, that's another thing, those horrible statements on boy's clothes, like I'm trouble or I'm a nuisance - nice messages they're sending. As if boy's don't have enough trouble at the moment lagging behind girls at school, those clothes encourage them to behave badly. Probably a bit OTT, on my part, but I can't see how wearing those kinds of messages everyday is reinforcing a positive self-image for boys.
