Nappy sack suffocation

Are you aware just how dangerous nappy sacks can be to babies? Public Health Cornwall has posted a new video on YouTube to help parents and carers everywhere to avoid the suffocation risks. Check it out here.

Surely it Doesn't take much up realise plastic bag and baby is a potentially dangerous combination and to keep them where the child couldn't reach?

mousymouseprice · 25/01/2012 12:49

I don't use them. one more thing to pay for and one more thing that will end up in landfill. just roll up the nappy and put it in the bin.

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 25/01/2012 12:50

Are the NHS really spending time and money on this?

Indeed, surely all parents or carers know how dangerous plastic bags are to babies? The parents who don't know or who leave their baby unsupervised with a nappy sack probably need to be aware that there are a lot of things that are dangerous to a baby!
I don't use them either, cloth bum babies in my house.

squeaver · 25/01/2012 14:20

To say nothing of the money they're paying someone to post on Mumsnet about it.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 25/01/2012 14:23

Is this a big problem in Cornwall? Has there been a spate of nappy-sack related deaths? And don't all plastic bags come plastered with the message 'keep away from children' anyway?

PattiMayor · 25/01/2012 14:27

OMG - plastic bags can cause suffocation? Why didn't anyone tell me before?? Shock Angry

Good grief.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 25/01/2012 14:29

Wait for their next YouTube output in which they reveal "Where bears take a dump and what religion the Pope is...."

Sheesh. Who knew plastic bags and babies could be a dangerous mix?

Perhaps the target audience for this could be found at Nethuns?

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 25/01/2012 17:50

To be fair, nappy sacks are a more filmy, floaty plastic than yer average Tesco sack, and hence more of a suffocation risk.

And also, I don't tend to leave my Tesco bags knocking around the bathroom floor between the wipes, the nappies and the bath toys Blush

McPhee · 25/01/2012 17:53

Good job we're not all thick NHS Hmm

NHSComms1 · 26/01/2012 11:05

Thanks for your feedback on our campaign. It's great to see so many of you are already aware of the risks nappy sacks pose to babies. Although many people do know of the dangers, we can't presume all parents and carers will have made the connection. Sometimes, these flimsy bags are simply left within reach and it only takes a few seconds for a tragedy to happen. We put the video together following the deaths of 11 babies in the UK from nappy sack suffocation - and they are just the ones we know about through the Coroners' network. Sharing the video on forums like mumsnet may just make the difference and for that reason we hope you'll agree it's well worth doing.

Actually, it is worth it. I am very careful about plastic bags, but not about nappy sacks. Will think again now.

purepurple · 26/01/2012 11:13

Surely the campaign should be about supervision of babies and awareness of how babies can choke/suffocate on many normal household things?

margoandjerry · 26/01/2012 11:26

I'm glad someone has put the figures out there. The NHS is doing this because 11 babies have died completely unnecessarily. All the Hmm stuff is irritating - some people just have never thought about it and that's why these babies died and that's why it's good to raise awareness. If you've already thought about it, good for you but what's your problem with raising the issue for those who haven't? And fwiw, because nappy sacks are filmy and thin and small they might more easily be overlooked than a big, crinkly supermarket bag which usually has holes in it anyway for this very reason.

pooka · 26/01/2012 11:31

Yes, stop with the Hmm faces.

It cannot hurt to get message out there - I also am very careful with carrier bags which arguably have less risk than nappy sacks as they generally have holes in and are larger. Whereas the nappy sacks used to live in low basket next to the nappies and wipes. Blush

If the campaign makes anyone stop and think, then is good. And if everyone who is all Hmm about it is already aware, then no need to get huffy.

HappylandHobbit · 26/01/2012 11:42

This has made me realise that our nappy bags are in reach if they tried to get to them. I'm off to move them now. I don't know why I haven't thought of it before really, I would never leave plastic bags around.
Thanks NHSComms1

CogitoErgoSometimes · 26/01/2012 12:25

NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly are calling for the support of children?s workforce professionals to help raise awareness of the dangers posed by nappy sacks following the deaths of two local babies since 2005 from asphyxia from nappy sacks

From the website they're saying 2 in 6 years in their region and '7 - 9 in England' over the same period. Please, even though it's technically possibile, can we get it into some kind of perspective about the actual size of the risk and not scare people unnecessarily?

tinkerbelleworkshop · 26/01/2012 12:28

I 2nd Hobbit. Will be moving mine to my handbag (as always out of reach of DD) as DD has a tendancy to go through her changing bag where I keep them at present. Thanks for raising issue

belgo · 26/01/2012 12:30

Nothing wrong with bringing this to peoples attention. I was brought up with 1970s horror movies public announcement films, and I never did climb up that electricity pylon and get electrocuted, so they must work.

mousymouseprice · 26/01/2012 12:34

I did climb up an electricity pylon but didn't get very far

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 26/01/2012 12:40

What belgo and margoandjerry said.

All the Hmm faces are a little irritating tbh.

belgo · 26/01/2012 12:40

gosh even scarier in german.
