Are you aware just how dangerous nappy sacks can be to babies? Public Health Cornwall has posted a new video on YouTube to help parents and carers everywhere to avoid the suffocation risks. Check it out here.

Envy I am swinging the lead at work so can't watch the film.

The farm ones were utterly, utterly terrifying. I think of them every single time my ds goes to see his mate who lives on a farm. Which is often and has been happening for some years

I also keep my nappy bags at floor level Blush. Thanks, NHS; I'll go home and put them out of reach.

I obviously am thick, McPhee Grin

naturalbaby - I have a use cloth nappies too and have to have nappy bags for when out and about. I assumed they were mostly used by people with cloth nappies as you have to take the nappy home?

Fwiw I am glad to have the reminder about this. 1 baby suffocating is far far too many.

I am actually shocked by those stats and feel bad for my earlier cynicism. Sorry, NHS Blush.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 26/01/2012 13:44

The stats are 7 - 9 children in 10 years. 2,000 children per year are seen in casualty because they have been scalded in a too-hot bath. 28,000 are admitted for suspected poisoning. If the NHS is going to spend cash advertising anything, shouldn't they be making videos about bathwater and keeping toxic substances out of reach. Save 30,000 babies rather than 1?

cogito, those are children who have been seen or admitted - not those who have died. My ds once ate a packet of 10 Marlboro Lights. Well actually he didn't; I found the mangled cigarettes once we got home from A&E, but I thought he had eaten them. That would've gone down as "seen" if not "admitted" for suspected poisoning I imagine. It's (almost) like comparing apples and oranges basically.

Having said that, I would like to see resources directed towards avoiding those accidents (assuming they're not already). It seems obvious to me not to put a baby in too hot a bath (hence people buy bath thermometers) and to keep Domestos out of reach (although clearly not to keep a handbag with cigaretets out of reach Hmm Blush )but if the figures are so high then it suggests a campaign is due.

Anyway, I doubt this bit of awareness raising is costing a great deal. Sending a video out to go viral is pretty cost effective.

I use a waterproof/washable bag to if I have to change nappies when out and about.

Why is it Public Health Cornwall, isn't this a nationwide problem?
