Cant believe what has just happened and im in on my own so had to tell someone.

i realised Id forgotten to give harvey (9 weeks) his last vitamin k capsule so went to give it to him - I bit the top of to squirt it in to his mouth and bless the little greedy man start to suck on it and I let go - honestly I got such a shock it all went slow motion, I had to tip him over on to his front along my arm and hook it out with my finger by which time was at the back of his throat. I dread to think how much worse this could have been

Oh Beccarolla that must have been terrible. Well done for your quick thinking though. Not sure if I'd have known what to do. Try not to dwell on what might have happened...and you probably need a stiff drink.

lucy123 · 11/11/2003 20:13

Frightening.

If it makes you feel better I've had several near-choking experiences due to my slap-dash attitude. Worst was when I gave dd an empty coleslaw tub to play with: it still had some plastic film attached to it (I didn't notice this obviously) and she promptly choked on it.

Heimleich manoevre for babies: turn baby onto belly and slap in the middle of their back. I think if it doesn't work (luckily it did) you turn them upside down and slap.

Now I think you should have a nice cup of tea and let yourslef calm down!

Oh dear, they have such a strong suck don't they.
Calm down and remember this episode for when he's older. My Dh still loves to remind his mum of how she dropped him in the oven when he was six weeks old and he got grill lines on his head. No lasting damage, but these things happen and you did well to hook it out.

lucy123 · 11/11/2003 20:14

actually, yes, a stiff drink!

CnR · 11/11/2003 21:20

Poor you. Well doen for your fast thinking though.

Have a drink and try and forget about it for a while.

janh · 11/11/2003 21:36

Norma, she dropped him IN THE OVEN???? What was she doing holding him in the oven?

Beccarollo, well done!

Angeliz · 11/11/2003 22:07

Norma..(gasping!!!!) what's that all about? please tell!

Angeliz · 11/11/2003 22:09

Beccarollo, as others have said, have a drink.....he's fine, it's AWFUL though isn't it?,i remember my dd falling off a big double bed when she was too little to move,(still don't know how she did it!)....

whymummy · 11/11/2003 22:17

glad he's ok beccarollo
ds nearly choked on a hoolahoop when he was 4,i had such a shock,i can't even look at a packet of the damn things now,i once read about a japanese woman that saved her child from choking on a small toy by using the hoover to get the toy out

CountessDracula · 11/11/2003 22:20

Oh god I know how you feel, caught dd with a 1p piece in her mouth the other day, put finger in to hook it out and was badly bitten, screamed but carried on and finally fished it out of the back of her throat. Mare. Hope you feel better now xx

Demented · 11/11/2003 23:21

Hugs Beccarolla, it's horrible when these things happen.

If it makes you feel any better the other day my DS2, 17 months (who was supposed to be in the care of my DH in another room) ran into the kitchen where I was preparing dinner and whipped a large chopping knife off the worktop, I had my back to him and didn't even hear him as I was peeling veg over the bin, thankfully I turned round to see him running with the knife in his hand, managed to get it off him before he hurt himself. I think it is best not too think too much about the what ifs but now whether the kids are in the kitchen or not knives are out of their reach.

Norma · 12/11/2003 14:26

From what I can gather she was getting a casserole out of the oven one-handedly with Dh in the other arm. Bent over, dropped him, and he bounced off the oven door and on to the grill pan. Dreadful.

Angeliz · 12/11/2003 14:27

oh that is AWFUL and as everyone has said to Beccarollo, could have been much worse! Thank God it wasn't!

janh · 12/11/2003 14:29

NORMA, I HAVE AN IMAGE NOW OF YOU SAT OVER YOUR pc FOR THE LAST 15 HOURS WAITING FOR MUMSNET TO COME BACK SO YOU COULD POST THAT!

Oops. Thanks for the explanation anyway. Sounds really scary!

Angeliz · 12/11/2003 14:31

me too now!

Norma · 12/11/2003 14:31

You're right. Sad and obsessive!!

Angeliz · 12/11/2003 14:33

no you're not sad, since i discovered it i've been constantly telling dp about conversations on here and have to bite my toungue so as not to tell my mam! (she is of the opinion that whoever you talk to on the internet is obviously a psycho)

handlemecarefully · 12/11/2003 20:14

Here's my near miss - put dd onto kitchen sideboard (next to me, with one arm steadying her so she couldn't fall off), reached for a can of beans in the cupboard, lost my grip and they fell free fall from my grasping hand, whacking dd on the head and leaving a rim imprint from the top of the tin. Went to A&E, confessed my ineptitude, they examined her and thankfully she was fine. So you see Beccarrollo - we all do it!!!

EmmaTMG · 12/11/2003 20:29

I've got one too...... DS2 was sitting on the kitchen floor next to DS3 who was about 3 weeks old at the time. Anyway I was cooking some roast potatoes and instead of spooning the spuds into the very hot fat I stupidly poured them in......and the fat slashed everywhere. Amazingly although my little men were sitting near the oven the fat when all around them and thankfully didn't touch them. The floor was covered and I shudder at the thought of what could have happened to them.
And another for you. Just last week I was carrying DS3 down the stairs and got my foot caught in the leg of my trousers and stumbled/fell down the rest of them. How I managed to stay up-right I will nevernow. I'm beginning to think my smallest DS has a guardian angel......either that or I'm very stupid!

Jzee · 12/11/2003 21:13

Vitamin K ? I'm a new mum to a Harvey as well and no one has mentioned giving him vitamin K - can you elaborate?

Beccarollo · 12/11/2003 21:16

Is your Harvey breastfed? Its a vitamin found in formula but not in breastmilk (I find this really bizarre) something to do with clotting factors in the blood - given for the first 8 weeks in breastfed babies.

oh EmmaTMG, you reminded me of another, when dd was about 8 months i was carrying her down the stairs on my hip one morning, (we used to live in an old little cottage with very steep stairs), and i just missed the stair and fell the last 4/5...........dd's foot was behind my back and she suffered soft tissue damage...it was swollen and i felt AWFUL.......till i took her sleep suit off i was sure i'd broke her leg.makes me sad to remember that!

princesspeahead · 12/11/2003 21:19

i love the baked beans and grill pan stories!

Jzee · 12/11/2003 21:19

Phew, no he's bottle fed so thats my question answered - thankyou.
