Cant believe what has just happened and im in on my own so had to tell someone.

i realised Id forgotten to give harvey (9 weeks) his last vitamin k capsule so went to give it to him - I bit the top of to squirt it in to his mouth and bless the little greedy man start to suck on it and I let go - honestly I got such a shock it all went slow motion, I had to tip him over on to his front along my arm and hook it out with my finger by which time was at the back of his throat. I dread to think how much worse this could have been

Twigglett is correct - Vit K is most often given by injection at birth in MOST babies.
It is very uncommon for parents to refuse.

Beccarollo · 12/11/2003 21:54

I never refused an injection? Was just given the bottle of capsules and told to give him one every sunday for 8 weeks hmmm

We refused vitK, Pupuce, for dd2.

I was under the impression that VitK is present, and more easily available to the baby, in breastmilk. Is that info now out of date??

princesspeahead · 13/11/2003 09:38

disease is haemolytic disease of the newborn, very rare disorder which causes fatal bleeding in some babies. vit k is given by single injection or by (usually) 3 oral doses at birth, one week and one month. area health authorities differ in what they do as normal - most do a single injection but because there has been some research linking this to childhood leukemia some health authorities (like oxfordshire) give it orally as a matter of course and some people choose to have it orally rather than injection (as I did for my three).
I understand there is no or only trace vit K in breastmilk, but it is in formula. so with this baby because he was on formula so young I didn't bother giving him the third dose at a month.

don't know why you have been told to give it weekly for 8 weeks becca, haven't heard of this method of delivery.

motherinferior · 13/11/2003 09:59

Mine got vitK orally at birth but I think that was because it was a home birth. Took her to babyclinic for second dose and was told they were out of it (rant, HVs, yada yada yada). She's had it all now.

CnR · 13/11/2003 20:54

My DD had vitK capsules too; an injection wasn't offered at all. The MW did the first capsule on one of her first visits, the seocnd I did a bit later on.

runragged · 15/11/2003 22:06

I fell down the stairs carrying dd and got wedged in the stair gate which then came away from the wall with the force of it all! DD was of course fine but by god you should have seen the bruises up each leg absolutely massive.

Bekki · 16/11/2003 08:11

Becca, I refused the injection and gave him capsules 3 times over a month. I don't understand what your capsules are. Go to gp and ask.

ANGELMOTHER · 16/11/2003 09:29

I refused vit k injection at birth also. Had one dose orally at birth, another 7 days later and was meant to have the final dose at 4 weeks but haven't bothered, does that make me a bad mummy. Dd1 never had the final dose as they don't do it in Holland so I thought hey ho....never heard of those capsules though. I was told I had to go to hospital for final dose, if I'd had capsules she might have had it, going to hospital was too much faffing.

Ok here's my near accident. Bonfire night I thought dd2(7wks) would be best in the sling, more snug etc. Anyway haven't actually used sling since dd1(3.8) so struggled for a little while then finally got her in. Turned to head for the door and she promptly fell out, sort of somersault, backflip, near landed on her head as I caught her by one ankle.............ooooh and that cry, you know the one, it really scared her.
Gosh read all this and I am a bad Mummy, going to sculk off and reassess my parenting skills

Clarinet60 · 17/11/2003 22:50

Don't feel bad angelmother, I've nearly dropped them out of those slings. Never felt safe in the end, so binned them all.
