Anyone doing a PhD?

Klio · 12/01/2006 11:00

I'm six months pregnant with first baby, work part time and trying to do a PhD (early church theology) part time (no funding as arts based grrr) as well so all feels a bit of an uphill struggle at moment!! Have major guilt feelings all the time as not done any research for ages now as always too exhausted to even contemplate opening my books. Just wondering if anyone has any good tips, especially for once baby arrives on scene, or just fancies a general rant about the whole thing!!

f*ck me, the VIVA is tomorrow. I am totally peeing myself. At least DS has been taking a long afternoon nap so I can do a bit of work every day. Must return to it...........

muminaquandary · 08/06/2006 12:56

HIGHLANDER I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!

GOOD LUCK

throckenholt · 08/06/2006 13:06

good luck Highlander - hope it doesn't get cancelled on the morning of the viva like mine did Sad.

It will all be over bar the minor spelling corrections soon Grin

oops - just realised you posted yesterday - so you are either through it, or still nail chewing wishing it was a morning viva.

Hope it went well.

Lio · 08/06/2006 13:10

Liking the name, Klio, and judging from this thread a Klio is like a Lio only a thousand times cleverer Grin

Noticed this thread was started ages ago; hope all is well for you, baby and studies.

muminaquandary · 09/06/2006 11:51

HIGHLANDER how did it go??

Well I hope. I picture you cracking open the Pimms / Chamnpaggne in celebration, too busy getting pi**ed to post!!

..... If not, we can swap viva trauma stories! (Altho when I got my result wasn't half as bad as I'd feared ...!)

Highlander · 09/06/2006 14:05

aw, thanks ladies. It was delayed for an hour so I was a sweating mess when I finally went in! The delay meant that we had lunch delivered though Smile It was all very relaxed and at the end they said the magic phrase........."pass with minor corrections" Grin Grin

Not too much champers - DH had to work last night and I'm preggers at the mo'. Might have a glass or 2 at the weekend though Wink

Keep at it everyone - it's a nightmare when you have a toddler, but well worth it at the end.

Highlander · 09/06/2006 14:05

crikey, muminquandry - what happened in yours?

muminaquandary · 10/06/2006 10:49

WELL DONE!!!! That is brilliant news,

I was also "passed with minor corrections" but I didn't get to find out until 4 months after the viva. Which was on a hot day in July, 4 hours long, no drinks or lunch served & they tore me apart for my lack of feminist perspective. Grrrr .... Uni Degree Committee had to ask for clarification on their examiners' report when it eventually arrived, & my dept has struck them off their list of examiners.

Total utter complete timewaster moobags.

Never mind. Am finally getting to the end of the corrections, as far as we have been able to unravel them from the report, and am handing in again at the beginning of July. Pg this time, with 3 yr old so they'd better not mess me around again. [wild gnashing of teeth and scary eyes emoticon]

foundintranslation · 10/06/2006 11:29

Congrats Highlander!!! Grin
I finished mine 3 years ago - still remember the pure fear before my viva and the relief after - one of the worst mornings and best afternoons of my life! Only got round to the graduation 3 weeks ago though, so have just recently relived the glory :)

I am doing a PhD, with part-time lecturing to pay the bills. I live in Oxford, but am doing PhD in Plymouth which is a challenge to say the least! I have 2 boys under 4 and sometimes feel overwhelmed, but I know it is what I want to do, and I have a great supervisor. I think that is the key, having people around that understand what you are going through!! Good luck!!!!

muminaquandary · 30/06/2006 12:23

bump

anyone else?

only a few days to go before I bind & resubmit!!! would love some company!!

geekgrrl · 30/06/2006 12:30

Can I just barge in and ask how you go about applying for place on a research programme? Do you have to present them with a detailed outline of what you want to research, or do you tell them the (very general) area and then get help with narrowing it down and drawing up a proposal?

muminaquandary · 30/06/2006 13:26

if it is for an existing post they normally send you guidelines on what they would like to submit, eg 500 word proposal & CV

Highlander · 04/07/2006 14:40

go go go muminquandry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got my hard bound copy on Friday. DS not impressed and ran off to get Postman Pat instead

The pass list arrived today. very chuffed.

On applying - I wrote to my supervisor and asked if he had any PhD posts availabel. We cobbled together a funding proposal. Took about a year to sort out.

muminaquandary · 06/07/2006 21:28

hurrah highlander excellent news!!!!

Lizthewhizz · 08/07/2006 06:26

Hello,
I just joined this site and saw the thread. I am in my third year of a part-time Ph.D and have a son who will be two next month.
I find it inspiring and encouraging that some of you have two children under four and work as well.
Well, just wanted to say 'hello' to everyone and best of luck with all your theses.

muminaquandary · 10/07/2006 12:26

hello! good luck to you too!

muminaquandary · 17/07/2006 10:47

OK, supervisor now back from hols and is conducting a live email supervision re the final corrected version ...... I have to say he is ultra conscientious / really wants to make sure those witches don't cause any more fuss!!!!

Jazzi · 17/07/2006 10:49

So exciting you are ready to submit - I just want to get mine done now!!!

muminaquandary · 17/07/2006 10:52

I really hope I can come back on here with some good news after submission this time, to be a +ve inspiration to you!!!

Jazzi · 17/07/2006 10:54

Sending you a massive good luck!!!!

Mithriltari · 19/07/2006 17:29

hiya, I am doing a PhD , my 3rd year starts in oct 06...I can't concentrate!! My progress report is going soooo slow...my experiments are out of the question as they could harm the unborn baby... I am 21 weeks pg...no funds in sight except the hardship fund if I can get them, plus child benefit like everyone else.
It is good to see one is not alone and that being a PhD student and a mum is possible. But I am always sooo sleepy and this heat is not helping at all!!

Thanks for letting me moan...

muminaquandary · 22/07/2006 10:58

why oh why I am taking this long?????

mathslover · 04/09/2006 12:29

Hello everyone

I am a single mother of three trying to do a PhD in Applied maths. I am really struggling and wondered if anyone had any advice/motivation/friendliness to offer! I have a huge progress review tomorrow and my supervisor doesn't understand the whole school holiday thing. It's the first day back at school tomorrow already and I just can't see myself getting it all done. Failing that, does anyone have any tips on staying awake all night to work?

Thanks, feeling totally overwhelmed at the moment!

Emma
