From what age did your LO move from their cot into a bed?

My DS is 16 mo, he can walk and climb over furniture etc, but I hadn't yet considered moving him out of his cot. He has a cot which changes in to a bed, so it will be an easy thing to do when we do move him up, but I'm just worried about what age to move him. The reason I ask is that my friend has an 11 mo girl, who cannot yet walk, cruises around the furniture, but cannot yet walk unaided, well they have just moved their DD into a bed, there are no side guards. I am over worrying and should I be thinking of moving my LO into a bed? What age or abilites did your LOS have/could do before you moved them into a bed?

DD was 13mo (I wanted to change sooner but DH was worried)! She was a dreadful sleeper in her cot and is slightly better in her bed. She could walk (since 9 months), climb etc and she had started trying to climb out using toys as boosters Xmas Grin.
Surprisingly she doesn't usually get out once she's in bed (we don't have a side rail) and she will shout for someone to get her in the morning. If she'd been a better sleeper it'd have been nice to keep her in the cot as it required a lot of stairgates etc to make sure she was safe to be left. My friend's DD is 2 and still in a cot, which works for them. If he's happy in his cot I'd definitely leave him as it's a nice safe place to leave him!!

Blackpuddingbertha · 13/12/2011 20:47

Neither of mine were climbers so they didn't have to get moved out really early, DD1 is huge though so she got moved into a bed around 20 months, DD2 was around her 2nd birthday. I know friends whose children stayed in until they turned 4! Each child is different and it's what ever suits you and your child really.

Tonksforthememories · 13/12/2011 20:51

DD1 was 18m and walking from 12m
DD2 was 22m and walking from 19m
DS was 22m and walking from 15m

They all slept far better once we'd moved them into a bed, and DS was/is the only one given to night wanderings.

dd was 2 years and ds was 2 1/2 years when they went into a big bed - both were walking by 11 months but I just wanted to keep them contained for a bit longer.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 13/12/2011 20:54

we moved DD last month at 27 months after a couple of weeks of her crying at bedtime "I no like my cot I want a big girl bed" she's still a terrible sleeper but at least likes going to bed in the evening now (it's staying there that's the issue)

Eglu · 13/12/2011 21:04

Both dses were moved just after they turned 2. I wouldn't consider it before then unless they were trying to escape.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 13/12/2011 21:07

My 23mo is still in a cot. We have no plans to move her anytime soon. She walked at 10mo.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 13/12/2011 21:47

Same as FruitSalad.
DD sleeps through quite happily in her cot and shows no signs of being able to climb out or outgrowing it (she's small for her age) so I don't see any reason to put her in a normal bed just yet. I'll probably keep her in her cot until she looks like escaping it or asks to go into a big bed. I suspect it'll be a while before either of those happens. Why change a winning formula?!

PippiLongBottom · 13/12/2011 21:54

Just over three each. They were all walking before age one too. Using grobags stops them from climbing out.

Panzee · 13/12/2011 21:55

Mine is 2 and is still happy in his cot. I'm happy to leave him there as long as I can!

Meglet · 13/12/2011 22:03

Both of mine had a cot-bed so I only moved them when they first climbed out.

DS was happy in his cot until 3.3 Grin.

DD started jumping out at 2.4 Sad. Pest.

They both still have bed guards at 5 & 3.

Longtallsally · 13/12/2011 22:07

Both of mine went into a bed with a little sideguard at 12 months. DS1 never ever got out - didn't seem to occur to him that he could, so he would just call when he woke. DS2 did get out so we popped a stairgate over his doorway, so that he couldn't fall downstairs.

DS2 used to have bad excema, so it suited me to be able to hop into bed with him, when he was scratching a lot. He settled back to sleep much better with someone in with him, and didn't scratch nearly as much

pinkyp · 13/12/2011 22:08

18 months. He use to rock his cot and I was scared it'd fall over

MadMonkeys · 13/12/2011 22:12

18mo. But only because she could climb out of the cot. Otherwise I would happily have left het in the cot. We use bedguards.

RubyrooUK · 13/12/2011 22:17

My DS has been in a bed with side rails since 10 months. But I'd much prefer he was in a cot as he tends to wander around with his eyes closed a lot - he would just never sleep in one; he likes his bed. So it's the best option for us.

If a cot still works for you, don't worry about it. My niece still sleeps in her cot at three and has never tried to climb out. DS could scale the sides before he could walk in order to escape his hated cot.

Mmmcoffee · 13/12/2011 22:26

DD went into a bed aged 20 months as we were emigrating and had no furniture for 3 weeks! Her 'bed' was actually a mattress on the floor, and I laid towels around the edge in case she fell off and hurt herself on the nasty hard carpet after the huge 6" drop Blush PFB syndrome extraordinaire! Grin

She went straight into a proper bed when we finally moved. She NEVER fell out.

WhereIsTheGreenSheep · 14/12/2011 03:38

My DS is 2 1/2 and still in his cot - he's never shown any signs of climbing out and is quite happy in there sleeping and playing when he wakes up. We'll be moving him out after Xmas though as DS will be needing his cot.

I wouldn't move your DS until you feel you really need to - if he's happy, why change it? Most people I know either moved their DCs into beds because they were climbers or because of new siblings coming in to the family.

thedogwalker · 14/12/2011 08:53

Thanks so much everyone, DS loves it in his cot and when he wakes he just plays in it. I just didn't want to think I was hindering his progress by not moving him. But all your advice has made me happy, he can stay in his cot. Im due DC2 in June so maybe think of moving him then, so I can reuse the cot for the new baby. Thanks again for your time and advice.

DS is 21 months and has just learnt to climb out of his cot (he's been standing since 9 months and walking since 13 months). We're going to take the side off it once we're back from our Christmas holidays (heading off next week) and if it goes OK will then move him into a toddler bed in late January I think. DC2 is due in May, so we want him to be settled in his new bed well before baby arrives, as otherwise he might get upset that "his" bed is being used for someone else. At the moment he will only climb out of his cot if we don't go to him when he's screaming to get up, and he can do it safely, so I'm not that concerned....

Cies · 14/12/2011 09:07

Ds is just 2 and is now transitioning from cot to bed. Both are in his room, and some nights he says he wants the cot, others the bed. It's mostly bed now, but the cot option is still there if he wants it.
He's walked from 11mo but still hasn't attempted to climb out of the cot.

Ophuchi · 14/12/2011 09:36

I moved DD from cot to single bed when she was 15 months. She never really slept well in the cot and one night when I was trying to settle her she said "stuck, mummy - don't like the bars," so I moved her into the single bed that night and she sleeps better now because she doesn't feel trapped.

She didn't walk until 16 months. At 15 months she was going round the furniture and had just been crawling for a few weeks. She's now 21 months and has only fallen out of the bed once, a while ago now. She's also a big girl for her age so doesn't look all that tiny in the single bed!

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 14/12/2011 09:52

With DD she was 2 and we moved her as she was starting to get a bit cramped and we decided that she was big enough and she loved it.

DS had the side taken off his cot this week. He is nearly 16m but had learnt to climb out so we considered it safest.

If your child is happy and comfortable, leave them in the cot!

PippiLongBottom · 14/12/2011 10:16

All these parents of climbing out children, do you not use grobags? They go up to age 3 and all my kids have had them and stayed in their cots until they are three. Not once have any of them attemptedto climb out because it is very difficult in a grobag.

blackteaplease · 14/12/2011 10:16

Exactly the same as Fruitsalad. Dd is tall for her age but sleeps in a grobag so cannot climb. I thought I would leave her in the cot until I potty train (whenever that may be).

amyboo · 14/12/2011 12:23

pippilongbottom - Yes I used grobags until DS was 14 months and learnt how to wriggle his way out and undo zips... And for information, he was perfectly able to walk around his cot while zipped up in his grobag! They are not the solution to everything... Besides, we found DS has slept A LOT better since we put him in a cot duvet, as he's a wriggly and very tall baby and obviously felt a bit trapped in a grobag.
