From what age did your LO move from their cot into a bed?

My DS is 16 mo, he can walk and climb over furniture etc, but I hadn't yet considered moving him out of his cot. He has a cot which changes in to a bed, so it will be an easy thing to do when we do move him up, but I'm just worried about what age to move him. The reason I ask is that my friend has an 11 mo girl, who cannot yet walk, cruises around the furniture, but cannot yet walk unaided, well they have just moved their DD into a bed, there are no side guards. I am over worrying and should I be thinking of moving my LO into a bed? What age or abilites did your LOS have/could do before you moved them into a bed?

pippi - I too tried grobags. They were ace till the 9/10 month mark when DS discovered that he could do an Incredible Hulk style move and pop himself right out with virtually no effort. I got some more robust ones at about 12 months, at which point I discovered he had the dexterity to undo buttons.

Plus, when he would wander around in his sleep, he seemed able to walk in the grobag anyway but I was scared he would trip and break his neck.

Pesky kid.

DD1 was moved at 18mths. She had been walking since 11mths so confident walker, climber etc was showing signs of climbing out the cot.
She moved from a cot to a toddler bed and was fine. Never got out of bed and was an easy transition. Needed the cot as DD2 was due just after that anyway and didn't want her to associate with the new baby taking her cot away.

DD2 is now 18mth and is moving to a toddler bed between Xmas and New Year. I fear she wont be so easy! Again she was walking at 11mths. Not really showing signs of cot climbing but it was this time of year we moved DD1 and found having DH home that week was handy that if she is/was a wanderer then he wouldn't be overtired for work.

I fear it could be interesting week though as DD1 (3.5) is going into a Single bed so that DD2 can have the toddler bed. I anticipate DD1 falling out of bed a few times and having to return DD2 back to bed a few times each night!

4 months, when I injured my wrists and couldn't lift him out of the cot. We have the mattress on the floor though (although he's been often slept in normal beds on holiday, when visiting etc)

Now at 23 m.o. several my friends are struggling with children who are now going into beds for the first time and wandering out/not leeping etc. It's just a non-issue here, although it help that I bf him completely to sleep and we co-sleep.

DD still in her cotbed (sides on) at 3, has never tried to climb out and stores a heap of books and toys at the bottom where her brother can't get to them!

DS is 18 months and is starting to look a tad interested in climbing .... he's also in a cotbed so at this rate he'll be into the bed stage of it before DD.

They both sleep really well and I've never wanted to do anything to rock that boat.

Vizzini · 14/12/2011 22:11

Another who has a child who can walk/climb in Grobags!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 14/12/2011 22:18

DD was about 2
DS 1,2,3 & 4 were all under 18mths

Never used a bed guard but the beds are not very high up.

Well, tonight DS and I are staying with my parents and we couldn't bring the travel cot on the tube so he is on the sofa bed in my old room and I will be joining him in a bit. I left him there and had to go back in 30 seconds later as he had fallen off the far side. Then I thought I had got him to sleep and came to sit down - a couple of minutes later the door opened and a cheeky face peeked out. He crawled out (still in his grobag - he hasn't figured out walking in it yet). I finally got him to sleep at 9.30...

So it won't be for a while yet. DS is 17 months, only just started walking and hasn't (yet) tried to climb out of his cot.

Ermm... 3.5 and still in cot Xmas Hmm. She can walk, talk, is fully toilet trained and can climb in and out of cot (with side down). Think maybe I should get a move on and sort it out? Xmas Smile

PeppaPigandGeorge · 14/12/2011 22:39

DD1 - 16 months, but that was quite late as she almost did herself serious injury before I converted the cot. She walked more or less on her 1st birthday (proper walking, she could run with no support. I've heard a lot of people in RL say their child is walking when it isn't. it's cruising with support.).

My second is still in a grobag and isn't walking independently yet at 12 months so I'm hoping I can keep her in the cot and she will stay my baby for longer than the first!!

Ds has always resisted going in his own cot or bed. thought Id better get him a toddler bed at 19m as he was getting up for a wee every night and he was heavy to lift over. he is 7 and still hates to go in his own bed.
my dd never spent much time in a cot as we all shared a double bed.her transition to a toddler bed was simple at age 2. I think she felt (and still feels) more secure at night. so i think whatever works for you and dc. my dd is 4.5 and still in a toddler bed because she is comfy and it takes up less room. they are close to the floor too so not far to fall.

degroote78 · 15/12/2011 11:51

My daughter is two and she'll be staying in her cot until she's three. We have a one bedroom flat so until we move it's easier. She sleeps in a sleeping bag so has never climbed out. She seems happy enough in her cot for now.

BsshBossh · 16/12/2011 10:43

DD was moved into a bed at 3.5 Grin Blush. The reason we didn't move her sooner was a) she slept really well in it b) she slept in a Grobag and never bothered trying to get out of it c) she never once tried to climb out of the cot d) she's an only child so we never needed to pass the cot on to a baby.

The transition to bed has been perfectly smooth. She loves it and hasn't bothered trying to get out of it at night even though she knows she can. Sleeps really well in it.

What a good thread - I've been thinking the same thing myself. I've been getting stressed as we're in a small one-bed flat and DD (16mo) is in a cot in our room and I've been worrying about what to do when she needs a bed (we don't have room for one in our room, but we can't afford to move house yet). She's teeny tiny, so I'm hoping she'll fit in it for ages yet, and if she ever starts climbing out, I guess we'll take the side off.
