Key worker child development record about your child at nursery - Have you read yours?!!!

MrBloomsNursery · 01/11/2011 13:02

Yesterday my daughter's key worker at nursery showed me the file they have made about her developed since she started nursery in 2008, when she was 5 months!! She let me bring it home, and I had tears in my eyes from laughing or just being stupidly proud at all the things she had said or done at nursery since age 5 months to now.

I can't believe how much detail they go into with analysing child development. I mean, every single thing that my daughter has been doing, like crawling to intereacting with other children has been logged. For example, they have written things like "X said that butterfly is bigger than this one"...I couldn't believe these things had been logged! And over 3 years, it ALOT of paperwork.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has read their child's development record at nursery, and what you have thought?

They show this to us twice a year at parents evening.

MogandMe · 01/11/2011 13:07

You are allowed to ask to see it at any time - it is your childs.

I used to run a nursery room and yes a lot of effort and time get put into each individual development file etc.

I'm glad you liked seeing the file :D

PartyPooperz · 01/11/2011 13:09

Our nursery does the same - love seeing the folder twice a year at parent's evening.

How did you not know about this for 3 years! Do most nurseries not do parents' evenings then?

OMG....NO I DIDN'T KNOW THIS!!!

She's been going there for THREE YEARS and this is the first time I was shown it!!!!!! Confused....

I feel stupid now!!

Okay, well I don't see the point of them showing me it after all this time, seeing as she starts school next September! Hmm...

Childminders have to do it too - in fact anyone who provides early years childcare. You have the right to see the file at any time.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 01/11/2011 15:57

We get to see ours at every parents night - they go over it with us - and we can go in any time and see updates.

MrBloomsNursery · 01/11/2011 20:20

We don't even have a parents night!!! Wth...I've been living in a bubble or something haven't I? Confused. I am such a crap parent.

Yes, ours are sent home regularly to be reviewed and signed off. I can add comments or ask questions at any time.

meglet · 01/11/2011 20:24

yes. They're all out on the shelf for us to read, I flick though it every so often and read it properly before parents evening. And yes, they do go into the tinest detail.

I love reading them, they are so funny.

cookielove · 01/11/2011 20:24

We don't offer a parents night, but we do send folders home twice a year, and whenever parents request them (although they never do) however we are transitioning into a new style of observation and now a scrap book learning journey, so they are all essentially empty at the moment.

Sirzy · 01/11/2011 20:25

like others our are sent home regulary and we have regular meetings with key workers.

Doesn't mean your a crap parent though, just maybe draws some questions about the level of communication the nursery has with parents!

RitaMorgan · 01/11/2011 20:27

I keep meaning to ask for ds's (he's been at nursery 8 months now) but haven't got round to it Blush His nursery doesn't have parent's evenings either.

I work in early years and spend a lot of time working on my key children's diaries Grin

ShowOfHands · 01/11/2011 20:28

They gave us dd's when she left preschool, I love it, and she has an ongoing one at school now. They even encourage parents to write in it.

YaMaYaMa · 01/11/2011 20:35

Wait, nurseries have Parents Evenings?? I have never heard of this Confused

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 01/11/2011 20:37

Yep, have had them at both the private and state nurseries the DCs have attended.

iskra · 01/11/2011 20:46

My mum still has my brother's (he's 23 now). It's great reading it over.

VenusWineTrap · 01/11/2011 21:06

I work in a pre-school and there is so much work goes into these files, on each and every child, It's a real labour of love and I always feel very proud to share these with parents and many get quite emotional when they read them.
Ours are open for the parents to view at any time if they wish, but are shared at least every term, instigated by us.
It's really up to the nursery to have made you aware it was available to see, our parents have to sign to say they are happy to have us make observations etc on their child before we start it.
What a lovely surprise to read 3 years worth in one go though!

KSal · 03/11/2011 08:58

Venus... what happens to them when the child leaves nursery? do the parents get to keep it?

PandaG · 03/11/2011 09:03

in our setting the file gets passed to the next setting the child is going to (usually school). School passes them back to parents after they have read them I think

JumpJockey · 03/11/2011 09:09

We can take dd's home any time we like, the first time I saw it was when she ytransferred up from baby room and I cried, it was so lovely and full of tiny thingsnthey'd observed (S was int the garden and pointed at the trees, I lifted her up and she touched the leaves and laughed) that made me know how happy she is there. And at least 2 photos from every week, which is wonderful now to see how she's grown and got more confident physically. If it was me looking after her full time we'd neve have that level of detail about her!

waitingfornaru · 03/11/2011 11:20

Yup.

The information in there is then passed onto your child's chosen infant school and used to assess their abilities when placing them in a particular class ... my report made quite a clear statement about this, but prettied it up.

Personally, I'm against the use of photographing young children in nurseries, especially when some nurseries take on unqualified people for 'work experience' placements.

JumpJockey · 03/11/2011 13:27

Waitingfornaru - these are just snaps the staff have taken of them in activity time. I can't imagine anyone bringing in a specific photographer, would they really do that?!

LoveBeingAWitch · 03/11/2011 13:36

I got told that we get it when they leave.

RitaMorgan · 03/11/2011 13:49

What do work experience students have to do with taking photos? If you don't want your child photographed then you don't have to give permission anyway.

mousyfledermaus · 03/11/2011 13:55

our nursery does not do parents evenings, but the staff tell us about the observations and thanks to mumsnet I knew about the file.

dc1 just started school and it was lovely to go through his folder with him, seeing all the pictures etc.
