How often should I wash a 1yo's hair?

When dd was very little she had cradle cap and ever since we have been in the habit of washing her hair every evening. However her hair is thickening up quite a lot now so is taking longer to dry.

I was just wondering what other people do really.

Once a week or more if he gets some kind of grot in it. I like the smell of his unwashed hair Blush

ellesabe · 16/10/2011 18:10

Ha! I like the smell of dd's shampoo :)

We wash every day. He does go to bed with damp hair though.

Every other night for DD. Plus any days she's combed her hair with her fork. Hmm

nowwearefour · 16/10/2011 19:22

once a week in this house!!

InmaculadaConcepcion · 16/10/2011 20:38

Every three days, unless DD has rubbed a lot of food into it.

Octaviapink · 17/10/2011 08:29

Used to be about once a fortnight for a while when dd loathed having it washed, but now she's 2.5 about twice a week.

KD0706 · 17/10/2011 09:37

Twice a week here too. More often if it is particularly full of food, dirt etc!

GreenMonkies · 17/10/2011 09:40

I used to rinse my girls hair with water in the bath at this age, but only shampoo'd it once a month, if that. Babies don't get greasy hair, so shampoo isn't really necessary, and even now I only shampoo their hair if it actually looks or smells greasy.

I like my kids to smell of kids, not perfumey stuff.

Justonecheese · 17/10/2011 10:30

I wash it every evening in the bath - I have to as dinner is always pretty messy. I only use a tiny bit of shampoo but it does mean she goes to bed with damp hair...

NoTeaForMe · 17/10/2011 17:16

We do it once a week, sometimes less. My daughter has always had quite a bit of hair. Until recently she didn't mind having it washed whereas now she hates it! Any tips to try and make it calm again?!

BelleEnd · 17/10/2011 17:17

My son is 2 and I've never shampooed his hair. It's not necessary.

Beamur · 17/10/2011 17:34

If hair is clean, then I wouldn't actually shampoo it. When DD was a baby she had very little hair for quite a long time, so it was sometimes 5-6 weeks between washes, but it would get damp in the bath. Now maybe once a week or 10 days. It still smells nice, but starts looking a but straggly.
If messy with food - then I'd wash it, or at least rinse it.
I wouldn't bother daily, and wouldn't put her to bed with damp hair either. Not sure why, but I always had it drummed into me as a child not to go to bed with wet hair.

Amarilis · 18/10/2011 20:28

Oh my word - what a mixed response. I wash my hair and body every day - and I wash my son's hair and body every day. They are busy, sweaty, messy things. My son always goes to bed as clean as a whistle. So do I... So does my husband.

Octaviapink · 19/10/2011 08:09

Baths are terribly drying for a baby's skin and babies aren't actually doing anything that gets them that dirty. Babies are different from adults, amazingly enough.

Bonsoir · 19/10/2011 08:15

My DD was born with a lot of hair and has always had quite long hair which got full of sick/food/snot etc, so I used to wash it every day when she was a baby.

Fuzzled · 19/10/2011 09:16

Nightly - food doesn't look good on his bedding Grin

BLW may be fun, but heavens it's messy!

Ixia · 19/10/2011 21:58

We just rinsed DD's hair with water when she had a bath (couple of times a week, unless painty or pooey!). She's 6 now, has bum length, lovely shiny hair and has never, ever used shampoo, only occasionally conditioner if v.tangled. Her eczema has more or less gone.

MudandRoses · 21/10/2011 22:37

Oh my god you are all going to think I'm disgusting but I wash DS (5)'s hair only once every few weeks, or when it looks grimy!! He gets it wet in the bath prety often, just not shampoo-ed. He has never seemed to suffer any ill effects from this...He hates having it washed so it just doesnt seem worth the trouble. I do my younger one (13 months) every other night in the bath but I don't use shampoo, just dump water over him. Might sound gross if you're bothered by the idea of dirt but I'm not, particularly!

AblativeAbsolute · 21/10/2011 23:01

DS1 (aged 4) only every week or two - and only because I think I ought to - it never seems to get dirty or smelly (he swims once a week, which helps).

DS2 (14 months) practically every day, because the little horror can't resist rubbing his hands all over his head every mealtime.

MockingbirdsNotForSale · 22/10/2011 13:16

If not filthy I do DD's hair (there isn't much and she's a year old) every other day. Mostly though it has food in it and simply wetting it is not enough. She's generally clarted in the day's activities anyway by the end of the day so a proper wash is always in order and her skin is lovely.

LeoTheLateBloomer · 22/10/2011 13:18

DD's got LOADS of hair and HATES having it washed, so as rarely as possible Blush

notcitrus · 22/10/2011 13:35

I washed ds's once a week or two - he was bathed more often than that though.
He did have cradle cap but I was advised to either put a bit of olive oil on it or ignore it totally - certainly shampoo seemed to make it worse.

Baths were mostly to get rid of food crud.

LucilleBallbag · 22/10/2011 13:36

dd2 puts all sorts of messy crap in her hair, so it gets a rub down with a wet flannel in the bath each night. it's only shampooed fortnightly though.
