i just read a post about a 6 month old falling out of a cot and wondered if this had happened to anyone else?

No, but I am interested! And will be watching!

Perhaps they hadn't lowered the base or had the drop side down? Once the baby has the upper body strength to haul him/herself up to sit the top setting is not deep enough (ours had 3 positions), likewise a crib or basket would be too shallow.

If you don't mind my saying you seem to have a bit of a preoccupation regarding babies' sleeping arrangements atm.

tweeni · 09/12/2005 16:05

oops made a mistake the baby was actually 8 months - not 6.

Slightly more understandable but still wonder if the base wasn't at its lowest or side not up. Most 2yr olds would n't just fall out if they stood up and leant over the rail with it at its lowest level and vast majority of 8 month olds wouldn't have sufficient balance and coordination to get a leg over.

WigWamBam · 09/12/2005 19:47

I suspect that the base wasn't in its lowest position; I can't see an 8 month old managing to fall out of a cot otherwise.

JingleShells · 09/12/2005 19:55

My DD just started to climb out of her cot a few months ago, she is 2 and now in a bed. It did take all her strength to haul herself out due to the height of the sides.

fisiltoe · 09/12/2005 20:05

ds2 hasn't fallen out of his cot - but could have done. We often sit him in his cot when running his bath etc. One day a few weeks back (when he was just 6 months) we'd done that, and when we came back he'd moved over to the side of the cot, pulled himself up on the side and was leaning over having a look at the floor - smiling and laughing. So now we put the side up! With ds1 he was nearly a year before we put the side up!

tweeni · 10/12/2005 09:35

no she said it was on the lowest base - i found it hard to believe too!maybe just a very tall and strong baby?!

I'd say that's physically impossible unless the side was down! DSs were in the cot til 2.5 and were never clsoe to being able to climb out let alone fall out.

FrostyTheGloworm · 10/12/2005 10:30

my brother used to get out of his cot (big old fashioned one, with sides up) by 8 months! Eventually she lowered the sides so he didnt have to drop so far to the ground, and he was getting out by himself every morning anyway.
Then she had the great idea of moving the cot over to the window so he could look outside when he woke up (lived in centre of village then)...he didnt climb out quite so often then.

in fact, the more I think about it, it must have been even earlier than 8mths, because it was before he could crawl!

ShortAndStripySolsticer · 10/12/2005 23:43

My DD2 (15 months) 'fell' out of her cot the other morning, it's a cot bed, so quite deep and large and it is on the lowest setting.

I think she managed to get a toe or two on the guides for the side/raising/lowering mechanism and that her upper body weight then brought her over the side. I can imagine an 8 month old managing similar TBH.

DD1 never fell out of her cot but they're both good at waking me (good at shouting ) so I usually get into them before they have the opportunity!

followthestarlover · 10/12/2005 23:45

ds is just 10 months and we have lowered the base of his cot because he almost fell out the other day!

tweeni · 12/12/2005 12:53

hi frosty - when your brother fell out was it on the lowest setting do you know?

OP posts:
Epiffany · 12/12/2005 12:58

ds climbed out of his cot on low setting when he was 7 mths
little sod... he was big strong baby very tall and cruising well....

Epiffany · 12/12/2005 12:58

and he landed safely on his feet and then trashed the bedroom

tweeni · 12/12/2005 20:18

and ppl were amazed when i said it was 8 months lol. did u have the sides up and everything epiphany?

OP posts:
SnowmAngeliz · 12/12/2005 20:19

Oh, my dd is 10 months and the base is still very high.
I might lower it now!

FrostyTheGloworm · 12/12/2005 20:28

tweeni, it was an old fashioned cot...with either sides fully up or one side lowed half way down. he couild climb out no matter where the sides were set. if he wanted out there was no holding him!

tweeni · 12/12/2005 20:29

oh so you couldn't lower the base or anything?out of interst was he an early walker?

OP posts:
FrostyTheGloworm · 12/12/2005 20:52

base didnt move...we are talking about nearly 30years ago BTW.
my 2 toddlers both walked at 11mths and i think I remember mum saying that me and my siblings all walked at aroung that stage. why?

FrostyTheGloworm · 13/12/2005 10:19

tweeni, is there a link between climbing out of cot and earling walking? just curious!

LIZS · 13/12/2005 10:35

Perhaps there is a small minority who can and even fewer who do under a year. I remember doing it myself but it was a military operation - piling toys and bed clothes into the corner and levering myself over, much to the shock of my Grandmother who was babysitting ! Was probably about 2 though.

Tweeni, I'm really not sure why you find this so fascinating. Don't think you can base your decision as to whether to bother with a cot, or go straight from crib to bed, purely on such anecdotal evidence !

FrostyTheGloworm · 13/12/2005 10:48

didnt realise this was about whether to use a cot or not. All babies are different and are ready for a bed at different ages.

ds never liked his cot, I mean he always wanted in with me. At about 1 year we put him in a double bed (we were renting and it was the only other bed in the house.) he slept much better there than in his cot.

dd was about 18mths when she moved into a regular single bed, because she wriggles and moves a lot her feet kept getting stuck between the cot bars and so she kept waking up.

as far as my mum remembers my brother stayed in his cot for a long time after he mastered the art of climbing out (they had no other bed for him to use), he never came to any harm or hurt himself climbing out though.

6 months seems a bit young to be moving into a bed though, is you 6mth old climbing out already? maybe push the cot up against the end of your bed so when she climbs out she will land on your bed and you will feel her (or is that just a ridiculous suggestion )

tweeni · 13/12/2005 16:43

oh no i already decided to get a cot but someone answered one of my threads saying their 7 month fell out which i was very shocked at. still will get a cot because you can't really put a baby in a bed as soon as they come out of a crib - they would be too young.don't know if there is a link between climing out of a cot and walking i just thought if a baby is more adventurous to climb out at a young age they will probably develop to do other things sooner as well?

hotmulledwinemama · 13/12/2005 16:56

My dd is in sleeping bag - apparently harder to climb in - can you remember trying to run when doing the sack race at school?

Anyway, she is 14 months and hasn't got out of her cotbed yet - it is on the lowest setting.
