My dd1 is 7 and there is no way I would let her watch it.

GREATauntymandy · 26/11/2005 15:31

then i would answer the questions.
I think you know your children best so know what is suitable for them.
Cant remember at what age mine watched eastenders etc. But thet are early to bedders so might not have been up at that time when they were 6

paolosgirl · 26/11/2005 15:41

Yes - 6 is too young IMO. A lot of the issues they deal with are far too adult for a 6 year old, and 7.30 on a school night is bedtime, surely???

hercules · 26/11/2005 15:43

Yes, I dont let my nearly 10 year old watch it.

hercules · 26/11/2005 15:45

It wasnt that long ago that had teenagers overdosing!

Moomin · 26/11/2005 15:52

even if they seem fine with the stuff they see on the soaps, imo they absorb much more than you'd think and then get very confused about it all, partci as there will be things tackled on 'stenders that she won't have had explained to her fully in RL (well, hopefully not anyway!). Too young, I think.

Blondeinlondon · 26/11/2005 16:05

I started watching it at 10
6 is maybe a bit young
Can you stick to Hollyoaks?

Moomin · 26/11/2005 16:07

blondeinlondon - are you taking the mickey??!! hollyoaks is just as bad if not worse - last time i watched it with any regularity it was all about self-harming, unwanted pregnancies, one-night stands, attempted murders....

WigWamBam · 26/11/2005 16:18

Call me old-fashioned if you like but in my opinion 6 is too young to be watching anything other than children's TV. Yes, EastEnders reflects things that go on in the world - but a lot of them are the sort of things that I would prefer my dd to learn about at a more appropriate age and in a more appropriate manner.

In your shoes it wouldn't make a difference whether her mother allowed her to watch it - it's your home, and you make the rules.

80sMum · 26/11/2005 16:25

Much too young, yes. At that age she should really be tucked up in bed before progs like Eastenders are on.
Can't understand why anyone would want to watch Eastenders these days. It's got so crappy lately. I watched it since 1985 but finally stopped this year. Haven't seen it since May - and haven't missed it! Liberate yourselves, all you soap slaves!

Blondeinlondon · 26/11/2005 18:02

Having just caught some of Hollyoaks I think it is unsuitable - even though it is on at 6.30

Blondeinlondon · 26/11/2005 18:03

Agree that Eastenders is rubbish nowadays

QueenEagle · 26/11/2005 18:11

I agree that she will only understand what she will understand and the rest will go right over her head.

BUT, I think when nearly all the characters are shouting at each other and there are a lot of negative role models on the programme with alot of angry scenes, then I would NOT let her wathc it.

littledonkeyrach · 26/11/2005 18:14

Mmmm, sd watched Corrie when she was about 8, may be a bit younger, when one of the female characters was raped, a young one.
She then proceeded to tell me and DH all about rape when she next visited us.

Far too young, IMO.

daisy1999 · 26/11/2005 18:15

far too young imo

Does it not bother you him seeing all those adult issues?

Blandmum · 26/11/2005 18:40

my dd will be 9 in jan and she would't be allowed to watch it. We are just starting to let her watch some programs after the end of Cbbc....the Holiday program, the cahnging rooms sort of things (if on before 8, when she goes to bed). We don't allow soaps or even Byker grove

I think it's very easy for children to watch soaps and assume it does reflect RL in some way, and that sort of behaviour, that way of speaking to people is acceptable and normal.

My dss are 6 and 8 and have never watched any soaps, and I certainly wouldn't allow it in the near future. Fortunately they're boys, and we don't watch soaps, so I don't think it's likely to come up really.
