Oh dear, I'm going to come out of the closet here and confess that my 9yo watches soaps. It's not that I allow her to, as such, but when you've three much older children around it's pretty hard to keep tabs on what the youngest sees. But she takes what she sees with a large pinch of salt and when I've talked about soaps she looks at me scathingly and says "It's not true, mummy, it's only a story."

I think Eastenders and similar are grim and depressing. For that reason alone I would not want a young child to be watching it. What on earth could they gain from it? I agree that children can be sheltered too much, but cannot see why any parent would want their child to watch rape, murder, illness, drug abuse, suicide, prostitution, crime and death on a regular basis (all storylines that have featured on EE). They are little sponges at this age and children of age 6 do not fully understand the difference between fact and fiction, especially when presented in a gritty realistic way as in Eastenders.
