Would you send your child to school if they had been throwing up the previous day ??

Just wondering because a girl in Dd's class was sent home yesterday afternoon because she was violently sick twice. Apparently she was also sick again in the evening.

Another girl has also got it, and been being sick all last night. Her mom has kept her off, but the girl who was sent home yesterday has gone into school today.

I will admitt that I am a bit peed off that her mother has sent her in. If one of my kids get it, then all 3 probably will, plus I just don't think it's fair on her to send her after she was that sick.

What do you think ??

Depends when she stopped vomiting. If mine are still at it after 8pm then I'll keep them off, otherwise they go into school.

Littlefish · 18/11/2005 09:42

Should have at least 24 hours without being sick before going back into school.

Hulababy · 18/11/2005 09:42

If she'd been sick that evening too then I'd have kept her off. Sounds like a bug, maybe one of those 24 hour ones, and they pass round so quickly.

school requests 24hours clearence after vomiting and diahorrea.

SoupDragon · 18/11/2005 09:43

School insists on 24 hours and I always stick to this.

crunchie · 18/11/2005 09:44

Depends how sick they have been tbh. My dd1 sometimes gets sick from coughing to much, but is actually fine. Then I'd send her in

nutcracker · 18/11/2005 09:44

As far as I know, she was sick at some point in the evening, cos the mom of the other girl who has it, rang to see how she was.

Personally, I wouldn't have sent any of mine, for their own sake and everyone elses.

I always take it from when they start being sick, so 24 hrs from when they started vomiting.
I personally would have kept her off.

SeaShells · 18/11/2005 09:45

Sorry that should say stopped vomiting.

NomDePlume · 18/11/2005 09:46

I'm obviously a mean/crappola mummy !

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 09:47

If my child seemed well, and was eating well (and keeping it down), I might send him in. He rarely throws up, so it's hard for me to judge.

SackAche · 18/11/2005 09:48

If they had their appetite back....and were keeping food/fluids down then yes I'd send them to school.

Nutty - If your kids were going to catch it they would catch it from them whilst being sick..... not after they stop being sick. So if they are going to get it they'll be infected by now.

Marina · 18/11/2005 09:48

I wouldn't send a child in either. 24 hours clearance is needed, I think. For everyone's sake including the lucky school staff who have to clear up the vomit

SackAche · 18/11/2005 09:50

Whats magical about 24hrs? If my kids haven't thrown up for 12hrs and are eating and drinking then I would say they over it. Never understood the relevence of 24hrs.
It would obviously also depend on whether they still felt like shit. But having their appetite back is a good sign that things are okay in the guts department!

BonyM · 18/11/2005 09:51

Depends how they were that morning. If seemed back to normal and good appetite then yes, I would send them in.

With regard to passing the bug to other children, the chances are that with incubation periods etc., they would have already caught it if they were going to.

nutcracker · 18/11/2005 09:53

Hmmmm I know that if ever i've been throwing up, I feel like shit for at least the day after, so there is no way I would send mine.

SackAche · 18/11/2005 09:53

BonyM - My sentiments exactly! Asking them to stay at home when they are fine the next day is like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted!

SackAche · 18/11/2005 09:54

Well Nutty, thats you. I know that I have got up in the middle of the night.... threw up....had the runs..... then felt fine in the morning!

It really depends on whats causing it. If its Winter vomitting virus then you will also be feverish and feel terrible for a few days.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 10:03

I've thrown up and felt really perky and fine a few minutes later. Even covered in puke. (DH hates this, I'm not sure why.)

I once had a really foul vomiting thing, straight out of the Exorcist, vomiting and vomiting, diarrhoea, bile, bit of blood. I had to have a shot in the butt, from the A+E, to make it stop (that was fun). But half an hour after the shot, I was absolutely fine. I went to work the next morning.

nutcracker · 18/11/2005 10:05

Yep SackAche that is me. Being sick several times is physically draining and so I don't think that then keeping them off school the next day is anything other than sensible.

OP posts:
SackAche · 18/11/2005 10:21

Nutty - A good shag's quite physically draining too... but I wouldn't take the next day off work!

Seriously though..... this just isn't something you can put a time rule on! The last time ds was sick at Nursery I put him back in the next day as I found out he was sick through eating 3 apples dipped in chocolate!!!! So it is something that you just have to assess at the time. If they feel fine and are eating/drinking then why keep them off?? If they still feel terrible.... keep them off. Simple really.... .and not yet ANOTHER situation on MN where everyone can come on a thread and say Oh my GOD, can't believe you'd be such a terrible parent! Which, TBH is where I see this thread going.

ds1's school has the 24 hr rule as well - and they will send the child home again if they find out that a parent has broken it

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 10:25

I don't think DS1's school has this rule. I do tell them if he's been ill, but explain he's eating ok again.

Of course, if he's drained etc, no school. He has a brisk 20-minute walk to school each morning, if he's not up for that, then he's not well enough for school.

nutcracker · 18/11/2005 10:40

SackAche if she had been sick for that reason then yeah I would agree, but it was obviously a bug as another child had it, and another friend has just rung to say she's just had to go collect her dd, cos she has it too.

P.S, I must be leading a sheltered life cos i've never had that good a shag
