I've got two "Bosters" (local phrase I suspect). I remember my friend asking whether I'd had stitches after 10lb 5oz ds. She was relieved when I said yes otherwise "sex would be like waving a wand in the Albert Hall" Grin Blush

HV also implied I should put him on a diet at 8 months Hmm

mistlethrush · 08/06/2011 11:56

I was very glad ds was a week early - I think he ran out of room - at 10lbs 5oz. Got his shoulders wedged unfortunately... But never had all those lovely rolls of fat some babies have Sad. And age has always been questioned - still is. He's now just 6 and looks more like 8 - speaks like one too - then goes and acts like the daft 6yo he is and everyone looks Hmm at him.

I was a minor celebrity in my town and in the hospital. DS was 11lbs 14oz, we had no idea he'd be so big until he came out (much easier birth than my DD)

We were in hospital for a few days as DS was jaundiced/hypoglycaemic (both partly due to his size) and every handover the new MWs and Drs would come over to see the monster baby. Everyone was full of praise and amazement and it really got me through the massive hormone crash etc, I was walking on air.

And then my immensely proud parents were telling anyone and everyone, and my DH was working for a massive company so the word spread pretty fast. People I didn't even know were coming up to me in town saying "ooh you're the one who had the enormous baby!" I loved it, again it really boosted me through a tough time with BFing issues and so on. It was mostly my family showing off about me/DS so hopefully I didn't come across as full of myself Blush

He's nearly 2 now and on the 75th centile for height and weight, it is actually DD (nearly 4) who is the tall lanky one and gets mistaken for about 6, she wears bigger clothes too. Their half brother (my DSS) was 6ft by 16 so not that surprising really.

The only weird comment I had was from my parents friend who praised me for feeding up such a big baby Hmm that's not actually how it works y'know...I actually ate less in that pregnancy because he took up so much bloody room! I always wondered if she was just calling me greedy!

fuzzpigFriday · 08/06/2011 12:07

Hahaha vogon, when we asked my MW what we should dress him in, she suggested a school uniform :o

fuzzpigFriday · 08/06/2011 12:10

Bella - I had the weaning 'advice' from many people too. I checked with professionals as I was concerned - I weaned DD way too early so I wanted to get it right this time. DS was fine with just BFing until 6m when we did BLW.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 08/06/2011 12:12

oh good. thank you. my GP is very sensible otherwise

The two worst were
"fancy that, big girls usually have small babies"

being referred to as a big girl reduced me to tears and sent me to slimming world as fast as my big body would carry me, and,
"How much! Look at the size of his head, bet you've had loads of stitches" followed by "No stitches, really, bet you've been round the block a few times ha ha ha... now would you like a Bounty photo?"

seeker · 08/06/2011 12:17

I was prodded a lot because they were concerned about how big ds was going to be - and it just seemed to be treated like a potential problem. Then I saw a lovely locum doctor, who prodded my bump, gave me a beaming smile and said "There's a lovely sturdy baby in there!" I still rememmber his face 10 years later - it completly changed my point of view.

devonsmummy · 08/06/2011 12:20

DD was 9lb 10.5oz at birth

Ah look baby sumo!
What a bonny baby ( which i took as meaning fat!)
Tonka toy
at least you dont have to be too worried about hurting her like a little newborn!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 08/06/2011 12:29

Shock at Bounty lady - that's so inappropriate!

DS was 10lb 5oz and born by c-section (not because of his size, but because of a positional issue). As he was lifted above the screen, the anaesthetist (I think) said "Good grief, he's the size of a three-month-old!".

Cattleprod · 08/06/2011 12:49

DS was 10lb 4oz. People usually made that sucking sound that mechanics and builders make when pricing up a job. Then they'd look at me, and say 'but Cattleprod, you're only a size 8, and you look like you've never been pregnant. Where did you hide him?'

He got jaundice at a couple of days old and looked ridiculous in the incubator having his light treatment. He practically filled the thing! Grin

websticks · 08/06/2011 12:53

My ds was 9lb 14oz at birth and has gained weight rapidly since birth. He is off the chart for both his weight and his lengh.
He is ebf and all health proffectionals always say wow you must have good milk. Unfortunatly other people ie family and friends and strangers say oh he is big or FAT and my milk must be pure cream! I have even been told i should put him on formula as my milk is making him fat by an elderly family member

QueenofDreams · 08/06/2011 12:56

Oh yeah I also got 'he's a big boy, your milk may not be enough to sustain him' Hmm DS was a modest 9lb 8. DD 9lb14

Funtimewincies · 08/06/2011 12:58

Ds1 used to get 'shouldn't you be at school' when he was 2 years old Shock. The thing is that he was only 6lb 13oz at birth Grin. He's still a skinny little whippet, just really tall.

Northumberlandlass · 08/06/2011 13:14

DS was 10lb 4oz at birth...the first thing one of the midwives said was "Well, you obese mothers do have large babies"...I'm 6ft tall and was a size 16....hardly OBESE. DH promptly told her where to go....

It was actually my placenta which caused more comments. Another midwife said "Jesus Christ, look at the size of THAT"...everyone crowded around for a look.....

travellingwilbury · 08/06/2011 13:32

I got a lot of bruiser comments too , I also had someone telling him how they were sure that the PND they had a few years earlier was related to the fact her baby was over 9 pounds .

This is when I was sitting with my newborn who weighed 12.11.

He was huge .

fuzzpigFriday · 08/06/2011 13:38

Northumberlandlass - same here with the placenta. The MW said it was a real shame there weren't any students about as she wanted to show them it. Apparently the placenta and cord were 'exemplary' :o

CharlieBoo · 08/06/2011 14:15

'Ooh he's a big boy isn't he, wouldn't want to carry him round for long!'

I always used to think why couldn't they say how beautiful he was?

golfwiddow · 08/06/2011 14:32

'ooh she looks like she needs a good meal haha' , said by my mil on every Single Visit Hmm said about dd who was only 6lb 15oz when she was born but put on 1pm a week from then onwards until she was weened

golfwiddow · 08/06/2011 14:34

That's meant to say 1lb Blush

QueenofDreams · 08/06/2011 14:37

bugger just typed a long post and then internet crashed.

Anyway the gist of it was: DD's placenta was very big. The midwife said that according to a study, babies that have a large placenta live longer (obviously barring accidents or similar) The thinking is that it indicates a really healthy heart and vascular system.

BuffyJ · 08/06/2011 16:21

"Well you two were hardly going to have a tiny baby were you?" Grrrrr
or from MIL "There has never been less than a 9 pounder in this family"

Also people seem to find it difficult to believe I EBF as only FF babies are meant to have chubby cheeks!

chutneypig · 08/06/2011 18:55

Quite shocked at some of the comments.

My most frequent - are they twins?

Yes indeed, they are. DS was over 9lb, his sister nearly 6. And yes, I was the size of a house. Thank you. And even my GP recoiled in horror at my stretch marks Grin.

They're both pretty strapping now so get a lot of people thinking they're older than they are.
