Crumbly - my MW gave me the Preeclampsia leaflet with a cheery 'I'm expecting you to get this soon, so you'd better read it'

Oh - and also diagnosed 'excess' fluid using 'the tap test' although apparently there is no such thing, sent me to the Consultant with suspected GD who said something to the effect of 'what rot' but said I'd have to do the GD test now otherwise their paperwork would not be complete.

I had a vile midwife who continuously lectured me about terrible risks as I had gestational diabetes and am 46. She sent me to the consultant who immediately said (after scan) "congratulations on your lovely big baby - ooh I hate those little scrawny babies" and did a comedy shudder. I could have kissed him - he was fab. My cherub was 9lb 6oz - one week early by elcs as transverse. Have had a few comments - wouldn't want to carry her far etc, but she is so gorgeous, most people just want to cuddle her!

"Well, you're no a wee lassie are you" - old woman looking me up and down in the street after me proudly telling her DS was 9lb 14oz at birth. I was quite stung.

Cheeky bitch.

And MIL managed to relate his size to the size of my hips, but she's never been polite or very bright.

Yes indeed, they are. DS was over 9lb, his sister nearly 6. And yes, I was the size of a house. Thank you. And even my GP recoiled in horror at my stretch marks .

They're both pretty strapping now so get a lot of people thinking they're older than they are.

Also people seem to find it difficult to believe I EBF as only FF babies are meant to have chubby cheeks!

bugger just typed a long post and then internet crashed.

Anyway the gist of it was: DD's placenta was very big. The midwife said that according to a study, babies that have a large placenta live longer (obviously barring accidents or similar) The thinking is that it indicates a really healthy heart and vascular system.

'ooh she looks like she needs a good meal haha' , said by my mil on every Single Visit said about dd who was only 6lb 15oz when she was born but put on 1pm a week from then onwards until she was weened

Northumberlandlass - same here with the placenta. The MW said it was a real shame there weren't any students about as she wanted to show them it. Apparently the placenta and cord were 'exemplary' :o

I got a lot of bruiser comments too , I also had someone telling him how they were sure that the PND they had a few years earlier was related to the fact her baby was over 9 pounds .

This is when I was sitting with my newborn who weighed 12.11.

He was huge .

DS was 10lb 4oz at birth...the first thing one of the midwives said was "Well, you obese mothers do have large babies"...I'm 6ft tall and was a size 16....hardly OBESE. DH promptly told her where to go....

It was actually my placenta which caused more comments. Another midwife said "Jesus Christ, look at the size of THAT"...everyone crowded around for a look.....

Ds1 used to get 'shouldn't you be at school' when he was 2 years old . The thing is that he was only 6lb 13oz at birth . He's still a skinny little whippet, just really tall.

Oh yeah I also got 'he's a big boy, your milk may not be enough to sustain him' DS was a modest 9lb 8. DD 9lb14

My ds was 9lb 14oz at birth and has gained weight rapidly since birth. He is off the chart for both his weight and his lengh.
He is ebf and all health proffectionals always say wow you must have good milk. Unfortunatly other people ie family and friends and strangers say oh he is big or FAT and my milk must be pure cream! I have even been told i should put him on formula as my milk is making him fat by an elderly family member

DS was 10lb 4oz. People usually made that sucking sound that mechanics and builders make when pricing up a job. Then they'd look at me, and say 'but Cattleprod, you're only a size 8, and you look like you've never been pregnant. Where did you hide him?'

He got jaundice at a couple of days old and looked ridiculous in the incubator having his light treatment. He practically filled the thing!

DS was 10lb 5oz and born by c-section (not because of his size, but because of a positional issue). As he was lifted above the screen, the anaesthetist (I think) said "Good grief, he's the size of a three-month-old!".

I was prodded a lot because they were concerned about how big ds was going to be - and it just seemed to be treated like a potential problem. Then I saw a lovely locum doctor, who prodded my bump, gave me a beaming smile and said "There's a lovely sturdy baby in there!" I still rememmber his face 10 years later - it completly changed my point of view.

The two worst were
"fancy that, big girls usually have small babies"
being referred to as a big girl reduced me to tears and sent me to slimming world as fast as my big body would carry me, and,
"How much! Look at the size of his head, bet you've had loads of stitches" followed by "No stitches, really, bet you've been round the block a few times ha ha ha... now would you like a Bounty photo?"

Bella - I had the weaning 'advice' from many people too. I checked with professionals as I was concerned - I weaned DD way too early so I wanted to get it right this time. DS was fine with just BFing until 6m when we did BLW.
