Has anyone had their baby and not had a name for him/her?

Think this is a situation we might find ourselves in!

Did your baby just look like they suited a particular name when they were born? Or had you got one all lined up and then they just weren't a Humphrey (or whatever)?

And is it ever acceptable to call a child "the baby" until they're old enough to choose their own name?

We didnt have a definite name and it took us 2 days after dd was born and we named her a name that wasnt on our list. Dh just came up with it and it just seemed right.

thecattleareALOHing · 19/12/2005 22:32

Yes, pph named my daughter after Cod was very scary to me.

spruceylucy5 · 19/12/2005 22:35

Crunchie our cat was called Poppy (named by someone else) and when dd was born, the name Poppy was just right so we renamed the cat "Puss"

didn't have a name for ds until he was 5 weeks old! he didn't care but it is amazing how many other people do!
we used to call him "darling" or "sweetheart" or "the baby"

thecattleareALOHing · 19/12/2005 22:39

Ha! we nearly gave dd the cat's name as well (Mimi, actually)

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 22:40

CK, that's what's getting me atm - the strength of feeling (real FFS you stupid bitch, why no name) that some people seem to have about this! WHY is it such a big deal to someone else?!

Aloha, noooo, can't face Cod being scary - will have to sort something out asap!

thecattleareALOHing · 19/12/2005 22:41

She was very frightening indeed, HM. I warn you.

Janh · 19/12/2005 22:41

hunker, have you got a shortlist - or longlist - or indeed any kind of list at all?

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 22:42

I know there was a thread re your DD's name (v pretty name it is too - ooh, did you decide to add the other name btw?), but hadn't recalled Cod was scary on it. Mind you, I could've guessed as much Had she been on the lash at Waitrose again?

thecattleareALOHing · 19/12/2005 22:43

She started up a special thread to bully me! It worked though

chipkid · 19/12/2005 22:43

chunker-they soon forgot that he had no name. You are entitled to be rude to anyone who gives you a hard time about this-you are pregnant!!!!

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 22:44

There's a chance we have a girls name, Jan (but not telling ) - well, we agree on one.

But a boys name? Nope. I am at the stage of not knowing what I like any more either - I thought Mortimer was a good choice earlier, for instance, when actually, it isn't

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 22:46

LOL at special thread, Aloha!

CK, I shall indeed be rude - my baby, and I have six weeks to name him or her (might even pretend we don't have a name for three weeks after we do just to really annoy people ).

tamba · 19/12/2005 22:51

oooh Hunker your baby is due on my birthday - if its a girl you should name her after me!

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 22:53

What, Tamba? Hmm...

See - I've lost all sense of what a name should be!

EatDrinkAndBeAMerryPip · 19/12/2005 22:59

Mortimer? Hunker, noooooooooooooooo, don't do it!

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 23:00

Oh, don't worry - was just opening name books at random and, as I say, I've lost all sense of what's a nice name

tamba · 19/12/2005 23:06

Lol Hunker - I meant Sarah!

Bet that got her some comments, Lockets (the nameless for several weeks thing - I know that Sonny was disapproved of my in-laws )

See, this is what gets me - why's it cruel? Does it matter to the newborn? No.

LOL at Sonnygate - still can't believe people can be so rude to someone who's just had a baby fgs!

We had one choice for a boy's name and 2 choices for a girl's name when DD was born. I was adamant about one of the girl's names (Always was going to have a daughter called Rose/Rosie ... even when I was a child).

And then DD was born and I suddenly wasn't sure. DH and I decided to sleep on it and he went home for the night to think and I spent the first night in hospital looking at her and 'asking' her if she liked the name Rose (blame the drugs ).

By the time DH came in the next morning we had both independently decided that she wasn't a Rose and that we would call her Abigail instead (Abi to her friends).

I am glad that I waited those 24 hours because although I like DS' name I felt I named him too quickly and didn't put much thought into it.

Tamz77 · 20/12/2005 21:09

I didn't name ds until I was sitting in front of the registrar when he was 3 wks old. I had chickened out of a name I had liked since I was 14 because everyone I mentioned it to grimaced, even the obstetrician moments after ds's birth. Ironically the name ds ended up with is also unusual and not well liked; when I tell people they usually just say, 'Oh'. Never, 'that's nice'. They don't even bother lying, in fact.

Anyway ds is known by his 'foetus name' and probably always will be, to me, it suits him and grandparents etc have started to join in.
