How old does this child sound?

Copies many things I say as best he can, Says lots of 2 word phrases, with omissions in (), like

More milk!
Op(en) (pl)ease!
Wait (for) Dada
High up

Much more limited range of 3 word phrases, like
Come Here, Mum
Wrong way Truck (you put the truck away the wrong way)

Can say only a few 2-syllable words as 2 syllable words.

Is only just starting to sort of know colours, struggles to understand words like Under, happy, feel, next to.

Could really be any age up until about ?

Id say younger than 2 though?/

Its hard trying to make sense of the world when your only very young.

12 months to 3 years.

jaffacake79 · 17/02/2011 18:57

Depends on where in the family the child is, if they have siblings.

I would say under 2. But that's without having a LOT more information. What's his physical development like?

headfairy · 17/02/2011 18:58

Could be any age from one to 5. They all develop so differently. At a shot I'd say 18 months, but that's based totally on just my experience of ds (dd not yet talking)

Trebuchet · 17/02/2011 19:00

Sounds like my 2.5 year old for words but he has no knowledge of colours etc

bigTillyMint · 17/02/2011 19:04

Mine were probably like that around 18months?

Firawla · 17/02/2011 19:06

i would go for around 18 months too

Plonker · 17/02/2011 19:06

Between 12months and 3 / 4 years

MoonUnitAlpha · 17/02/2011 19:07

Between 12 months and 3.

roadtrain · 17/02/2011 19:08

12 months - 4 years. So difficult to say because children develop at such different rates.

My DS could do that stuff aged about 2y3m and my DD could do that stuff around 15m. So a whole year of difference within the same family!

ragged · 17/02/2011 19:08

I only ask because a SALT said that DS has quite good vocabulary for a child his age, I think because he used the word "high" Confused, but I think he sounds like an average just turned 2yo.

3 older siblings, jaffacake. Why are siblings supposed to make so much difference? They certainly don't "talk for him" if that's what you mean.

roadtrain · 17/02/2011 19:11

Sibling make a huge difference - there is more chatter going on and also my eldest encouraged my youngest (extremely forcefully!) to use the correct words and to pronounce them correctly.

If she couldn't say a word, he would tell her the word and shriek " SAY IT, SAY IT..." until poor little DD said it Grin.

piratecat · 17/02/2011 19:13

sure she didn't mean they talk for him??

only that kids pick up more when they have siblings in their earhole.

ragged · 17/02/2011 19:14

So you expect children to talk better than average for having older siblings? Most people I speak to seem to think it's the other way, delayed speech more likely if the child has older sibs.

DS is not just-turned-2yo, btw.
Since seeing SALT we now have lots of homework and I am feeling a bit :( at how behind DS seems to be.

Id have had him at just turned two with the talking. Im shocked he knows any colours though. Brilliant.

It is generally the case that older siblings help speech in younger ones. However, it is not always the case so you shouldn't worry if it isn't the case for your DS. It was true for my youngest, but it isn't true for my friend's youngest, who talked far later than her older sister.

SALT stuff can help loads. My DS was under a SALT a couple of years ago, now you wouldn't tell him apart from his peers. Don't panic!

TallulahDoesTheHula · 17/02/2011 19:25

Between 2 and 3

ragged · 17/02/2011 19:33

Actually, DC1 really did know his colours by 2yo; I didn't know that was a bit unusual. Was also the only one of my 4 DC not to have delayed speech. Speech has been progressively worse with each DC, so much for the theory that older siblings help...

I'm not panicking, just a bit down. The SALT homework is full of concepts that DS doesn't have (like colours), so I have to modify the excerises for what DS can easily understand or be taught. This is going to be hard work .

He was 3yo a few days ago.

I think he sounds pretty average for his age.

Orissiah · 18/02/2011 09:01

My DD was talking in sentences and knew colours by 2. Also could count 1 to 10. But her vocab/communication skills are very good.

I would say on average, though, that a 2 to 2.5 year old could say the sentences you describe and colours towards 3.
