Have tried persuading DD why she should not allow herself to be ripped off and part with £69 of her birthday money on a JW hoodie.
Suggestions please?

TBH, I would let her buy it, I agree that they are ludicrously expensive and she'll be lucky to get a years wear out of it but it's her money. I'd let her have her moment of "being cool", that is according to my 12 year old and friends!

If however you are set against it perhaps a trip into town to have a look at what else could be bought with the money or saved towards a high end item might help.

jonicomelately · 06/02/2011 14:22

Let her have it. She'll wear it out so it'll actually turn out to be money well spent.

Bronte · 06/02/2011 14:51

You've absolutely echoed what my heart tells me! Will try diverting her if I can..it just pains me to think she's fleecing the pockets of the JW brand who very cleverly have created this hold over gullible teenagers.

penelopestitsdropped · 06/02/2011 15:01

Thankfully DD isn;t old enough for the teen crush thing.

Is this some boy band member then?

kaumana · 06/02/2011 15:07

penelopestitsdropped · 06/02/2011 15:14

oh i seeeee.

Well if he is the hot new designer then £70 isn't that much. not really.

you;d pay a good £40/50 for a sweatshirt from most places (that aren't primark)

The trendy geek thing isn't really my thing so this one seems to have bypassed me.

marialuisa · 06/02/2011 15:16

They are very well made and come up big, unless she's a giant it'll last for ages. DD (9)has some size 8 Jack Wills tops and I can wear them.

Hollister is cheaper and just as acceptable in these parts, if you have one nearby.

mmmitsdelicious · 06/02/2011 15:17

Let her buy it.
It is her money after all Smile

hocuspontas · 06/02/2011 15:21

I am reluctantly parting with £98 for a gilet this very minute and feel your pain....

Although it is a 19th birthday present and dd1 is at university where EVERYONE has one mum, I'm the ONLY one without one etc etc. Grin

PollyMorfic · 06/02/2011 15:23

Teach her to look for cheaper versions on ebay.

hocuspontas · 06/02/2011 15:25

Amazingly the same gilet I am buying went for £127 (used) on Ebay last month. Someone got carried away!

Bronte · 06/02/2011 15:33

Oh yes.. we had the gilet obsession back in September! Bought an equally good one from gap for £30..Agree the hoodies are robust, the one she bought in the sales last year is still in good nick and yes it still fits her. Wonder how much it would fetch on ebay?

£69 of birthday money? She's lucky!
Def let her buy it, nothing worse than not being cool at school! Also better to have one decent thing than 10 primark crap things.

Bronte · 06/02/2011 16:02

Shall do the dastardly deed this weekend! Will have to smuggle it past her dad somehow.

jonicomelately · 06/02/2011 16:57

Don't let her look on ebay for a cheaper version. If it's her money let her have the whole experience of going to the shop, getting the nice bag etc. That's as important to (some) teenagers as getting the item itself. We may not understand it but if it makes them happy, why not?

Bronte · 06/02/2011 17:46

Makes me wonder if there were comparable must have items when we were growing up. Can't really remember anything myself. Think my older sisiter hankered after a kaftan coat!!

mmmitsdelicious · 06/02/2011 17:50

When I was growing up it was Benetton, Naf Naf etc.
Then Levi jeans.

alemci · 06/02/2011 18:01

they had some in Bicester village for £44. my daughter paid for her own. I won't pay that sort of money.

Bronte · 06/02/2011 18:03

Oh yes...but it wasn't until i was maybe in the 6th form that I was aware of this stuff.

OP posts:
toddlerama · 06/02/2011 18:06

Agree with alemci. Try and get to Bicester village. It's still a Jack Wills shop/experience/bag(!) but you'll pay less.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2011 18:11

There's a similar JW outlet in Portsmouths gunwarf quays...

alemci · 06/02/2011 18:11

she's wearing it now and it is lovely. A baby pink. The quality is good.

Perhaps i should treat myself LOL
