My DS says he feels like a baby as for him it's lights out by 8pm. Is this early?

But constant whinging that this is too early and all his friends go at 9

chewitt · 16/01/2011 19:44

Will go up and gt him to turn light off shortly

My DS1 - 7.5 yrs- goes to bed between 7.30- 8. If in bed before 8 I will let him read for a bit and try and remember to go up at 8 to tell him to put the light out. He quite often then needs to go to the loo and tries to take a book with him to prolong matters, one night he was on there for an hour reading and couldnt walk when he got off as his legs had gone to sleep!
Tonight he was in bed by 7.15, asleep by 7.30...so sometimes I think that he could do with going to bed earlier than he does

9.30 on a school night, 10 on a weekend. She gets up at 8 for school as she is quite quick and compliant in the morning and we are only a few minutes walk away.

When our children were younger, we had a long commute so always kept them up later so we could have the time. Even though we no longer do that, they were used to a later dinner and bedtime so we just never changed it.

ByTheSea · 16/01/2011 20:18

Once she's in bed, she's allowed to read as long as she'd like. DH and I both remember sneak-reading as children.

My DS is 8 too and goes to bed between half 7 and 8. He gets very tired and bad tempered by about 7 though.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 16/01/2011 20:22

My DS2 is nearly 8. He goes between 7-730.

I used to have nightlights and story cds. I wanted it all to be cosy and nice.

I found that it just kept him awake and he would keep himself up till the end of the cd and put it back on again. He would do this for hours if I didnt notice what was going on! He has ASD so I dont know if that made it worse.

So now its kiss and cuddle and lights out. He is usually asleep within minutes.

He has to get up pretty early at 7am so I feel he needs to go to bed early.

pointythings · 16/01/2011 20:25

I have 2 - nearly 8 and nearly 10, they go to bed at the same time.

Routine starts at 7.30 - brush teeth, get read to, in bed by about 8. They're then allowed 15 minutes reading time, then it's lights out (supervised by me).

No exceptions unless there's a special event on and it's a weekend. On weekdays they have to be up by 6.15 am and they need their sleep - if I didn't work, the schedule would shift.

Children that age need 10 hours a night and there are strong correlations between getting enough sleep and doing well at school.

I'm a bit of a dictator about bedtime, can you tell? ]smile]

CarGirl · 16/01/2011 20:25

Lights off at 8.30pm but sometimes she puts herself to bed at 8pm because she's tired.

They get up at 7am.

The 7 year old has lights off at more like 9pm unfortunately she doens't need much sleep Sad

5inthebed · 16/01/2011 20:25

DS1 is 7, 8 in May, and he goes to bed at 8 on a school night and latest 10 on a weekend.

SandStorm · 16/01/2011 20:28

My dd is almost 8 (next week). She goes to bed at 7.30 and goes to sleep after a story which I still read to her. I like to have lights out and be back downstairs at 8pm.

piratecat · 16/01/2011 20:33

interesting.

my dd has hardly slept since birth, she is a very buzzy kid, always on the go. Consequently bedtimes have been hit and miss and mainly hectic.

She goes at about 8.30 now. Yet is never asleep until 9.30-10.

I have tried putting her to bed earlier, but the same happens, just seems to be worse the longer she lays there.

Up each morning at 7.

Lucycat · 16/01/2011 20:34

dd2 is nearly 8 (well in May) but has swim training 3 times a week from 6.35 to 7.35pm so we aren't home until about 8pm then it will be 8.30 before she's wound down enough for sleep.

tammybear · 16/01/2011 20:36

DD (8) goes to bed at 7pm school nights, and between 8-9pm depending on how good she's been and what's on the telly Grin

SkyBluePearl · 16/01/2011 23:04

6.45 - he needs it!
