Did you go overdue? How many days over?

Hi could you just humour a very fed up pregnant lady and answer me these couple of questions!?

Today Im 10 days over my due date and starting to tear my hair out.

Would love it if you could reply to this thread with how many days over you went and a quick run down of how you went into labour - it would be great to know too if your baby was posterior (back to back) as Im sure thats whats holding my labour up and Im losing hope of it happening naturally which is irrational I know, I just want some perspective

Thanks

Poor you - I went 14 days over with my first and it is so miserable -in the end I couldn't talk to anyone on the phone because they would all say - haven't you had it yet! I did have to be induced - probably not what you want to hear - but I'll keep my fingers crossed that it will all happen soon (and naturally) for you. Take care.

Ds was 12 days over and posterior - I ended up being induced with him, BUT had gone into labour anyway - had pains in my hips and back mostly. Even though he was posterior, it wasn't a hugely long labour - about 12 hours in all. Dd was 14 days over, and I went into labour naturally with her - woke up 6am with contractions, again in back and hips, although I don't think she was posterior - the midwife described her as ROL - she was born by 10:10, so again a fast labour, and she was born at home.

Please try not to worry - I know exactly how you feel - because I wanted a home birth, I was desperate to avoid induction, and was convinced that my body 'didn't know' how to go into labour. I was getting really down about it - you feel like you're going to be pregnant forever! I'd recommend sex to get things going - semen has prostoglandin in, and I think you need to lie down afterwards for a while to let it all have some time round your cervix.

Good luck - things will happen soon - I know it's hard to believe, but you'll have a baby in only a few days now. Remember you've been pregnant for 41.5 weeks - enjoy these last couple of days. (Easier said than done, I know!). Looking forward to hearing your birth announcement shortly! xxx

Hi Beccaroll! Its me, still here.
I was 10 days overdue with both dd and ds. With dd I had a sweep at 9 days, and then went in for induction at 10 days, but had actually been doing a little bit of contracting overnight and was sufficiently dilated that they just needed to break my waters to induce me. I think if I'd let nature take its course I'd probably have gone into labour anyway the day after the sweep.
Ds was 10 days overdue, sweep didn't work, needed pessaries etc. But in the end he had a congenital syndrome (born with no thyroid gland), one of the effects of which meant that he was always going to be of abnormally long gestation, so I don't think I can read anything into that.
As you know this one is 3 days late...! But I'm taking heart from the fact that I am having the od pre-labour contraction which I never really did with the other two, so I'm happy to let this one go for a good while longer without doing anything - for the first time I think I might actually go into labour by myself!!!

Some of us just cook them longer than others I guess... hang on in there. But if they offer you a sweep, you might want to try it?

dd was eight days over and they had said I would go into to get induced think the knowledge of what happens there made me go into labour!! a good helping of home made goulash also helped things on way i think - but it did seem to go on forever and ds had arrived eight days early
good luck

badjelly · 02/09/2003 10:02

16 days over and didn't even realise that I was in labour as it started at 1 in the morning with the worst diarrhoea ever (I sat on the bog for 2 hours and got dead legs!), I only realised after we rang the midwife for advice and she hauled me down to the hosp and anounced I was 2cm, then packed me back off home with a useless tens machine.

Posterior? oh yes and then some!

I'm sure you'll be fine - good luck!

ThomCat · 02/09/2003 10:04

I went 10 days over and then got on the castor oil, 9 hours later (after downing whole bottle mixed with oj) i had my little girl!
Lots of people are v against castor oil so I'm no recomending it but it workd for me with no problems at all and my 3 friends who did it before me.
Good luck, it won't be long now.

Gem13 · 02/09/2003 10:37

Poor you!

I was 10 days overdue and went for a routine 'chat' where the MW did a sweep and announced I was 4cm dilated!

DS had his hand beside his head and he was wedged so I think I'd been in labour for a while. I kept telling DH I was having rather odd sensations like being stabbed with a pencil.

Getting to 4cm without knowing about it sounds great but then nothing happened all day until they broke my waters which was rather shocking. Especially as I'd been thinking that as I'd got to 4cm without realising it, surely this was going to be a breeze. Oh, how wrong I was...

Hope it happens for you soon.

Pimpernel · 02/09/2003 10:46

dd was 15 days 'late' - my family always go quite overdue though, so I was expecting it. I went into labour naturally, and dd wasn't posterior. I was told that holding a newborn baby can set your labour off sometimes, so I had a cuddle with a newborn when I was seven days over - didn't work for me! Good luck!

oliveoil · 02/09/2003 11:13

I was 10 days over but I think that was because I kept talking to my stomach and telling the baby 'stay in till we're in the house' We moved in on the Friday, she tried to arrive on the Tuesday but gave up and arrived on the Wednesday instead.

ratbag · 02/09/2003 11:34

My first 2 dds were both a week early and I thought no.3 would be the same. She had other ideas though lol - turned up a week late! The little madam decided that she wanted to share my birthday with me, but at least she arrived by lunchtime so I didn't spend the whole day in pain!

Grommit · 02/09/2003 11:53

Becca - I went 10 days over with dd - not much fun - you have my sympathy! I was induced on the 11th day

Beccaroll · 02/09/2003 11:56

Thanks for the messages - Im trying to remain positive and keep things in perspective.

Someone mentioned about being offered a stretch and sweep - I went for my "overdue" appointment at 4o wks +4 and Im not seeing anyone again until induction day at 42 weeks. So 2 weeks without seeing a midwife or anything - is this right?

I was 11 days overdue and there are women who go 44 weeks... not that they choose to be pregnant that long but they do refuse the induction.
A sweep i an induction in my book - I am nototiously against it but that's me ! I have seen women have bad (unnecessarily too painful) labours because of it so as a doula I always warn mothers of the pros and cons.
If your previous pregnancy were overdue - then you are meant to have longer pregnancies!
I have posted many times that the average gestational age is 41 weeks - so you are only 4 days over due !

Beccaroll · 02/09/2003 15:44

Pupuce - I have no problem with the lateness!! I just wanted encouragement that natural onset labour does occur beyhond 10 days late and its also possible with posterior babies!! I was starting to feel like because it hadnt happened yet it wasnt going to happen (crazy I know )

Irrational I know but this morning I just needed reassurance that it could happen any time - I was starting to lose faith in my body and think an induction was inevitable.

Thanks for the replies

Becca, I have to say, when we met the other day, you looked like you were ready to pop.

Good luck & hang in there.

Becca- it will happen ! I was 13 days late - agonising but so worth the wait!

zebra · 02/09/2003 16:28

Oops, maybe I'm confused? Is there Becca & Beccaroll both on the board, both huge with bumps? I definitely met a MNer in the library the other day. Thought she was you, my apologies if I got it wrong!

Beccaroll · 02/09/2003 16:44

hehe I dont think that its me! Unless I have pregnancy amnesia - I certainly have a HUGE bump but havent been to a libray in weeks!

You had me worried there!

OP posts:
pupuce · 02/09/2003 17:29

Well Beccaroll - your body will get going - the question is.... will you be put under medical pressure to get going ???
At 42 weeks it becomes useful to check placenta and fluid with a scan to make sure all is still well.
On another list (with independent MW) they are extremely angry at what their clients are being toldby some MW when they get past 40 weeks ... some scare tactics and all.
Some IM MW have been at 44 weeks births and they had to protect the mums from the bullying tactics from some other MW!
Did you say how late your first one was ? Do you have a 28 day cycle ?
It's not because it's OP that it won't come out... and 2nd time OP are MUCH better are resolving themselves, i.e. your uetrus is better at turning baby in labour.... hence much less of an issue if an issue at all.
A mumsnetter had such a worry a few months back and I think it was all absolutely fine in the end.... I am thinking it might be motherinferior but I may be wrong here....

Beccaroll · 02/09/2003 17:40

Thanks for that Pupuce..

I was induced at 41 weeks with my first - knowing what I know now about the average length of pregnancy etc I cant remember the reasons they gave for inducing at this date!

I always DID have a 28 day cycle but this baby was conceived first month after Mirena coil was removed and I had recent laparoscopy and laser to endometriosis so I suppose these factors might change that? I dont know.

OP posts:
pupuce · 02/09/2003 17:45

Well there you go - no surprise it isn't out yet....

Beccaroll · 02/09/2003 17:48

Which bit isnt a suprise? The induction with my first, the mirena or the endo?

Or all of the above!?
