What is a game cube?

Janh · 18/09/2005 21:12

Oh! We had paperboy! (Big dogs and bats used to come out and getcha?)

WestCountryLass · 18/09/2005 21:13

OK, read the rest of the thread...No, I probably would not, I am sure some my kids friends would have that kind of thing and they can play on one when they are at theirs.

zippitippitoes · 18/09/2005 21:13

I'd forgotten that computers used to have tape recorders attached

and I think it's just part of growing up now

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 21:14

ZTT, we were very impressed when we got our Spectrum +2 - the cassette player was in-built! Height of technology...!

weesaidie · 18/09/2005 21:14

I also had Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, one of those games where you have to give your character instructions!

I was terrible. On the first level you have to get out of the house to avoid the bulldozer and I kept saying things like, 'go to the door,' 'go left...' etc.

Unfortunately the first command should have been, 'get out of bed!'

MrsForgetMeNotFul · 18/09/2005 21:16

we had a SESAME STREET game for age 3...and it was a fun way of 'teaching' numbers and colours etc...so NOT ALL games are 'bad'!!!!

(just watch the certificate ratings - as you would a film...as the language gets a bit 'rough' on the 12+ games.... you can be 'fooled' by a 'pretty' illustration on the box....)

zippitippitoes · 18/09/2005 21:17

is a sinclair a spectrum and where does amiga fit in

battybox · 18/09/2005 21:50

i had a sinclair ZX81 and sold it to a collecter lately for a good deal of money

my son and daughter do not have gamecubes or playstations but just use the computer when theywant to play games. they do not feel leaft out at school and have never badgered for them.

i have never heard that that game cubes help hand and eye coordination and working in school have never heard it proven.

WHATS WRONG WITH GOING FOR WALKS AND PLAYING WITH OUR CHILDREN

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 21:51

Nothing wrong with going for walks and playing with children - it's pretty offensive to imply that just because you buy them a games console you don't do that!

Skribble · 18/09/2005 21:52

I wonder where my ZX81 is I heard they were worth money.

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 21:52

ZTT, I don't know about the brands - think a Spectrum was a Sinclair - our Amiga was later and had a built-in disk drive [woo]

ScummyMummy · 18/09/2005 21:54

Sinclairs and ZX81s are Spectrums I think?

Under no circumstances, absolutely not.

Skribble · 18/09/2005 21:58

Back to the original question, its a lot of money for her to play one game but there are a lot of games which are great for eye hand coordination, logic and problem solving. We have a PC and my kids build theme parks, do biology quizzes, race cars, explore mythical lands, design cards, do cartoons etc. etc. etc.

But strangely enough they do other things too, play on swings, explore rockpools, sail, run, climb trees, draw, design gardens and build models.

Computers and game consols can be part of a balenced childs life just don't buy the games that are for adults.

Skribble · 18/09/2005 22:00

I meant to say DS has a playstation1 and a game boy. DD age 5 has singing and dancing games for the family PS2.

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 22:00

Get her a dance mat too and she'll exercise herself into knackeredness

battybox · 18/09/2005 22:05

well that livened things up
nasty old batty box through a spanner in how dare she!!!!!!! who does she think she is!!!!!!
mother of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO WAY

trinityrocks · 18/09/2005 22:07

Oh no I can't buy one..................I forgot that obviously if she owns one then WE CAN'T EVER WALK OR PLAY OTHER GAMES EVER AGAIN

totally pissed off by the obvious feeling that my child will live on the thing rather than use it as just ONE of the millions of things that she enjoys to do

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 22:09

Er, OK, BB...!

TR, don't fret - honestly, it's not crack you're buying her That's for sixth birthdays.

battybox · 18/09/2005 22:09
